They are already 66 years old, and their current modifications will allow them to run through 2045, at which point they will decide if further modifications are needed or if the B-52 should be retired. So yeah, 100 years is perfectly reasonable for The B-52.

When I watched DS9 on Netflix recently, I always loved it when they showed an Excelsior. I think it's the best looking ship in all of Starfleet. I wish it had been the main ship in one of the series.

I love the design of the Excelsior it is one of my favorite designs of the starfleet vessels. It looked big and powerful, and I always loved it when you caught a view of it on TNG, and the other shows.

I really like the idea of ship classes that hang around a while. It’s realistic to modern navies, and makes even more sense for a space faring civilization, whereas it would almost always be easier to refit an existing ship than to build one from scratch.

It's still one of the most popular handguns in the world, civilian and military, manufactured in a range of calibers in countries around the globe. Sometimes classic design is timeless.

I think that the Lakota had been up-gunned. O'Brien comments during the fight with the Defiant that the Lakota was carrying a lot of firepower for an Excelsior-class ship. (Of course, the Defiant had a surprise of its own, ablative armor.)

The Lakota is my favorite starship ever. It took the Excelsior class and brought her into the TNG era, with quantum torpedoes, upgraded phaser banks and warp drive, and better shielding. She was converted into a true warship. Starfleet was done fucking around.

The Lakota, in addition to her quantum torpedoes, had her dual point emitter ports replaced with emitter strips that were the same size, givng the top and bottom of the saucer the ability to fire 5 simultaneous beams.

Remember what it mentioned in the video the Enterprise B was a Refit of the class and her sister ships so the U.S.S. Lakota was of the same design as the Enterprise B so that makes her a sister ship of the Enterprise B and like I mentioned in a previous comment it's sad that the Lakota and the Enterprise B were the only ships of the Excelsior Class that were of that design that we've seen in any episode of either DS9 or even Voyager.

A fun fact about the refit first seen in Generations for the Enterprise B- there was no in universe reason for the extensions on the side of the hull. The team responsible for the studio model couldn't build a new one from scratch so they modified an existing Excelsior and the additional parts were needed to have bits cut out of for the Nexus damage, they couldn't destroy the existing Excelsior for it. The Excelsior is also my most favourite starship class of any sci-fi. I've been really looking forwards to this one.

Which is ironic, since they later couldn't remove the extra bits. That's why the Lakota in DS9 still has them and why the ship model still had them when it was sold at auction some years back.

I like that the Lakota had the modifications. In-universe, it tells us the subclass had at least a 2-ship construction run. ;) Realistically, I think with such a long production run there should be at least half-dozen different sub-classes of the Excelsior, the Enterprise subclass being only one type.

Definitely my absolute favorite ship in Star Trek. Something about it’s design just SCREAMS “Golden Age” especially when you see what the Excelsior NX-2000 looked like on the bridge. It’s so sleek, so retro, so clean. With those red uniforms gleaming, Starfleet seems inspirational. I mean, movie-wise it was simply designed from the ground-up to say to the Enterprise A “I’m *better* than you, gramps.” but it’s become much more than that lore wise.

My reasoning behind the Excelsior class staying in service so long is that the space frame itself had a lot of room to expand into for many reasons that made it logical ( and not just the show saving money on ship models). 1. Compared to the Constitution and Enterprise class the neck was far thicker and the secondary hull far larger in volume. 2. The transwarp drive system was likely far larger then a standard warp drive system so when the reversion was made that would have left even more volume available. As far as the Miranda types perhaps it was the modularity that kept it in service. Much like to reduce production time and specialize mission profiles the Nebula class (My favorite alongside the Excelsior) was created.

This is my favorite ST movie era ship. I really don't care for the Emterprise B modifications except for the shorter neck and the additional impulse engines. What they did to engineering and the nacelles makes it look downright ugly. PS: I really like how Spacedock in general just gives canon facts instead of offering up opinions or made up explanations. It's refreshing. PPS: I think us fans deserved an Excelsior movie with Captain Sulu.

When I first saw Star Trek 3:The Search for Spock I really hated the Excelsior class as Starfleet was favoring this ship and denied Kirk's request to repair and refit the Enterprise but Starfleet denied his request twice and decided to retire and decommission the Enterprise and even after the decommissioning of the Enterprise A the Excelsior Class was chosen to be a successor to the legacy of a legend with the launching of the Excelsior Class refit U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B and even though this ship was a successor it could never replace the original which was a true legend.

I don't know if it ever happened in the Star Trek universe but I saw this video on the design development and history of the Excelsior Class where it said the development and design of the Excelsior was in response to the Klingons designing and secretly constructing a new class of warship and the Starfleet Admiralty asked the Advanced Starship Design Bureau to begin designing a new class of Starship to deal with it and that was what lead to the birth of the Excelsior Class only for Starfleet to learn everything they heard weren't true until after the design and construction of the prototype U.S.S. Excelsior NCC-2000 was built and commissioned.

I think the Excelsior Class Starships were the first Federation starships built with a battle bridge long before the construction of the Galaxy Class and if no one believes me just look at pictures of the master systems display of the Excelsior and the Enterprise B and zoom in an area above the ships forward torpedo launchers and you'll see it or zoom in on the names of those areas and it'll say it right there battle bridge.

The sponsons on the Enterprise B served two purposes. Behind the scenes, they wanted to make sure that they could use the Excelsior model for future use like how they used it in DS9 and relabeled it as "USS Lakota". Hence, the sponsons were intended to be damaged. Second, it was another way to start the transitional gap design between the Excelsior and the Galaxy.
