Remember that this movie came out right at the end of the Cold War. The Soviet Union had dissolved not but 7 or 8 months earlier. Anyone growing up in the midst of those tensions - where potentially all human life could have been wiped out 3 times over in 5-30 minutes, would have been very familiar both with the desire for a change to a world of hope , and the inflexibility of some to accept change to anything other than mutual hatred. You’re right, though - that message is STILL relevant, today. It’s not the big bad USSR anymore, but rather now we are at each *other’s* throats. It seems we’ve lost the lesson. Also: not sure if you’re aware, but Praxis exploding is a Chernobyl allegory.

Not sure if it's been mentioned anywhere else, but William Shatner actually understudied for Christopher Plummer in Henry V at Ontario's Stratford Shakespeare Festival in 1956. When Plummer wasn't able to perform, he watched Shatner and was impressed by Shatner taking the initiaive to perform his own way, rather than imitating what he'd seen Plummer do in rehearsal.

I actually appreciate the Shakespeare references. General Chang is a Klingon version of Sun Tsu - or to reference another scifi character: Admiral Thrawn. Chang is a military officer who is in the service when the Federation is the enemy. He studies the culture and develops a affinity for Shakespeare. It is through this he develops many battle plans to annihilate the Federation. If you watch the cutscenes from Star Trek Klingon Academy he uses many human tactics against a simulated wargame with the Federation.

"The fact is that I'm a huge fan of Star Trek V..." Shatner: "HA! At last - IN YOUR FACE NIMOY!" It's tough to choose a favourite Star Trek movie from the original series. They've all go something to them, they've all got a different story to tell. The reason why I prefer the movie series to Star Wars is that it's not simply about heroes vs. villains, outside of Star Trek II. There's a bigger problem that needs resolving that some bloke on a spaceship shouting at them. It keeps the movies fresh and makes for lots of fun dynamics. I guess this is why I can't get behind the new Star Trek, it doesn't feel as colourful to me, it's all gritty monotone with none of the wonder. I love Meyer's budget-conscious direction on the Trek movies, this one included. Simply showing us the galley and the sleeping quarters opens up the Enterprise a bit more, and gives it more of a feel of a properly crewed ship in space rather than one room with the main cast. Props on shots such as the enlisted men getting knocked out of their bunks by the Praxis effect too. I really dig the Chernobyl and collapse of Soviet Union metaphors in this one, and the struggle of overcoming prejudices for a better future. And Christopher Plummer is clearly having a ball. Current ranking top to bottom: II, IV, VI, III, I, V. If we include the new movies it's.... II, IV, VI, III, I, ST3, ST1, V and the abomination that is ST2. If we're including Next Gen then it's... (phew) ... II, IV, VI, III, I, ST3, ST1, First Contact, Insurrection, V, Generations, Nemesis, ST2.

At the dinner table Klingon chancellor Gorkon quotes Shakespeare "To be or not to be," then says to Captain Kirk that “you have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon.” So the joke with all of the Klingons quoting Shakespeare is that they are well familiar with his works because (they believed that) he was a Klingon. There were several other lines in this film that got big laughs, such as when Kirk invites the Klingons to eat with them and Chekov says to Uhura "guess who's coming to dinner." I saw this film in a theater with two different audiences. A lot of laugh-inducing dialog, and the laughs were intentional. I saw all 6 original Star Trek films in theaters multiple times, and own them all on VHS, LaserDisc, and DVD.

It seems that the upper crust of Klingons of that era were huge Shakespeare buffs, to the point that they revised history to make Shakespeare a Klingon! Chancellor Gorkon even says "You have not experienced Shakespeare until you've read him in the *original Klingon*," implying that the English version is just a translation and thus inferior. I think the writers did this to upend our expectations of the Klingons. They have a reputation for being savage, brutal, or uncivilized, but these Klingons are erudite, educated, and sophisticated to the point where they appreciate the best of Earth's cultures even better than most humans do. I also think dressing Christopher Plummer as a Klingon and getting him to recite Shakespeare was too tempting for the filmmakers (probably Nicholas Meyer), and I don't blame them!

Part of the thing about Shakespeare being quoted was how things get mixed up and lost in history. There is a line one of the Klingons says, I think at the dinner party, about how Shakespeare is not as good unless you have heard it in the original Klingon, i.e. that Shakespeare was Klingon! It is a sort of repeated in joke in this movie, e.g. Chekov always claims things are Russian ("Russian epic Cinderella") and Spock quotes Sherlock Holmes, claiming him to be one of his ancestors! On the serious side, this movie has one of my favourite Kirk quotes, which, to me, takes us to the real heart of the character: "As Captain, I am responsible for the conduct of the crew under my command"

This movie was made in no small part to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Praxis was Chernobyl the catastrophic event that arguably lead to the nation being dissolved. Naturally this was Leonard Nimoy's passion projects Just as ST: VI was before. He (Nimoy) only reprised his role in TNG just to promote this movie. Spock references several key points to this move throughout part two of Reunification. Also you can see several sets are reused form TNG. Ten- Forward is the president's office. They used the same set for engineering. Peace was the main message. But you should really check out the events happening leading up to and at the time this movie came out.1984-1991 was a crazy time.

Some of the reasoning behind Chang quoting Shakespeare, I'm told, was to illustrate the irony/idea of cultural appropriation: "You have not truly heard Shakespeare until you have heard him in the original Klingon." I was told that line was a reference to a Nazi once saying: "You have not truly heard Shakespeare until you have heard him in the original German." ... Another theory as to why Chang is quoting Shakespeare is because he is practicing psychological warfare against Kirk; by taking the words of his favourite authour and using them against him in a torturous/mocking manner... The most realistic explanation for Chang quoting Shakespeare is because Plummer was just really good at doing it... "All the world is but a stage, and the people are merely players."

Fun note, we can see that the Qo'noS 1 is a K'tinga class which is a refit of the venerable D7 class battle cruiser and the ship which is escorting her the Enterprise is a Constitution class heavy cruiser refit when they are both flying side by side we can draw a meaning of the message where both ship types minus their refits saw active combat against each other throughout their careers much like their command crews which like the ships have known nothing but aggression towards each other, both ships were heavily armed and armored much like their crews which were more than experienced, to have them both have to escort each other to a conference which had the chance to end the decades of hostility much mirrors the main point of the film of enemies working towards a common goal.

This for me is a great example of how Sci-fi used to handle real world social and political issues versus how modern scifi does. You can watch this solely as a sci-fi film with moral and philosphical leanings and plenty scifi trappings and the story works and stands on its own, or you can see it as a metaphor to the ending of the cold war, which it delibretly is. But that underlying parrallel to real world events of the time it was made is not forced to the surface, the good scifi story takes the lead and the metaphorical leanings are under the hood and there to be discovered and explored by the viewer at their own choosing, or ignored by the viewer in favour of just enjoying a good ST scifi tale. In current scfi, ST, Doctor Who being two prime examples this is reversed, the social messaging has dominance over everything else and the choice is removed from the viewer, resulting in a feeling of being lectured at using the characters and story soley as a vechicle to tell the audience what they should be thinking and taking from it. Personaly I'm with JRR Tolkien when he said that freedom should reside in the mind of the reader (or viewer in this case) not be enforced onto them by the author.

Unfortunately as you pointed out a lot of new sci-fi the subtlety has been lost. I was never a big fan of enterprise because I thought it was a mistake for them to go pre Kirk however it still felt like a star trek. I was unable to make it through the pilot for discovery as they had taken too much artistic liberty with established characters such as the klingons making them look like rejects from a Hell based pride parade. One thing to remember about this film, from a 1967 Trekkie ... The trailer for this film showed Kirk being disintegrated -- but without the context of it being Kirk's duplicate. We were all convinced Kirk would die in this film. They'd done it with Spock when we didn't know if there would ever be another Star Trek film. Everyone knew going into this one that it would be the last Original Series cast movie. Unlike McCoy, Scotty and Spock, Kirk had never been mentioned in anything but the past tense in TNG to that point. The sole direct reference to Kirk's potential fate was in TNG: "Unification" when Spock talked about the Khitomer conference and how Spock didn't want to be responsible the way he was for Kirk and his crew. That episode aired _after_ ST6 was shot, but *before* it was released. Everyone thought Kirk would die. It was right there in the trailer. Spock made it sound like Kirk would die. His death in Generations is cheap for Kirk. If we were to ever see him die, it should have been in a blaze of glory -- even a literal one. So we were *scared* that this would be Kirk's death.

@@alexachipman actually, thinking about it now, it all tied together and came to a head at the very end. After faking us out with disintegration, the last moment where Kirk tackles the President had us terrified they'd faked us out again. There is one split second that had us going, "Frak! He's going to die taking a bullet for the President!" It would have been a worthy hero's death, which was what also flickered through our minds at that moment. Then they quick-cut t Kirk saying to the President, "Kirk, Enterprise," Only then did we have a collective sigh of relief.

@@nickbell8353 I honestly don't know why people find the plot to ST5 to be "silly." It's about a man on a quest to find proof for the existence of his god and the quest to find paradise. As Sybok states, it's one of the few things man as sought since he first gazed at the stars. If anything the plot to _The Final Froniter_ is closer to Roddenberry's vision of Trek than _The Wrath of Kahn,_ which is widely regarded to be the best. Personally, I think _The Wrath of Kahn_ is very overrated, but I think it resonates with a wider audience because of it's typical "good guy vs. bad guy" plot. The TNG films all shared that same formula. Likewise, _The Voyage Home_ is considered to be the most popular among audiences, but I again think this is largely attributed to it being set in (at the time) present-day Earth, so non-Trekkies could still connect to it. _The Final Frontier_ is full-on cerebral science fiction; there are no hand-outs for the sci-fi challenged.

In one of the Star Trek novels, it develops that Earthers and Klingons share two only common passions upon which diplomatic common ground could be built. Coffee (which would hereinafter be referred to by Klingons as "Raktajino"), and the writings of Shakespeare, which were thought to so completely express the Klingon heart and soul that it was assumed by them that Shakespeare must have been a Klingon stranded somehow on Earth. It is said, that you have not truly experienced Hamlet until you have heard it performed in the original Klingonese. Sulu's teacup. You would think that 300 years in the future, it would be possible to make shatterproof porcelain dishes. Possibly with magnetic bases to enable them to stay put on the tabletop and not go sliding around. Must have words with the manufacturer. It irks me that in the final battle, Excelsior just shows up way over there, instead of dropping out of warp at Enterprise' side and moving in front of her to take the hit from Chang's killshot in place of Enterprise at the last possible moment. Whoever choreographed that climax didn't grok the whole dramatic tension thing. So, in the end, the great irony of the movie is that a grand cooperative conspiracy was exposed between the Federation, the Klingons, and the Romulans to prevent cooperation between the Federation, the Klingons, and the Romulans.

Ah another fan of Star Trek V, knew there was more than one of us ;) While not my absolute favorite I feel ST VI is one of the best movies in terms of plot and story and I enjoyed your reaction, especially the little SW reference.

I didn't realize there weren't that many of us until I mentioned it! Not sure why, I enjoy V although I think I watch IV more often.

I like Star Trek V too. I would have loved to see the movie the way it was intended. Lisabeth Shatner wrote a book about the experience with some help from William Shatner.

I always thought Star Trek V would have been a much better ending to the TOS era! ...no! Hear me out! Remember at the end of the old TOS episodes they always ended the episode with a corny joke and Spock's eyebrow raised - That's basically what V was. A fun ending and they go off to explore in a hope-filled shiny new ship. Instead with VI we get a depressing ending with retirement and decommissioning.

I agree it would have been much better if General Chang's Shakespeare quotes were "in the original Klingon" 😂 I thought it was hilarious the way he tried to claim him as a Klingon writer Interesting how current you found the message to be, as the film was written as a direct allegory to the end of the Cold War (with stalwart generals on both sides wanting the conflict to continue, and nobody being sure how to coexist after) I always thought the Excelsior should have been the ship to deliver the homing torpedo, as they were the ones charting gaseous anomalies at the start of the film (setting up having extra scanning equipment on board) It felt like the writers swapped this out so Enterprise could be the hero ship in the final battle

..This was also around the time that Klingon was becoming solidified as a language. Aside from the instruction book and cd it has been offered at colleges as an accredited language, there is the Klingon Language Institute with almost all of Shakespeare's having been translated....as you cannot appreciate him until you've read him in the original Klingon...there have even been jobs offered looking for those fluent in Klingon!...

Someday I want to learn it properly, beyond a word here and there! I am much better with Sindarin. I used to write my college notes in it, so people would stop bothering me about borrowing them.
