Also characters you could actually resonate with. I was excited to see a female protagonist in Episode VII, but unfortunately Rey turned out to be a horribly shallow character, same with Kylo Ren. I actually liked the way he was portraid in episode VII as some kind of a bratty teenager (The stoic vader role was already explored), at least it was something new in SW... But they had to butcher it by turning him in a soppy overly-melodramatic depressed loser by episode IX. Luke had an arc...can't say the same for Rey.

Just as there seem to be more critically valuable lessons within this singular ten minute clip than a person likely has years enough remaining to grapple with. However many years ‘I’ have left in this life, I’ll don’t think I’ll ever have enough time or opportunities to properly & accurately relate to Dr Peterson just how deeply grateful I am to have happened across his work & words. Jesus Christ, the extent to which JP is abstracting this concept of how Star Wars is just another form of truth which people gravitate toward like a legitimate religion is something special. I don't think I could explain it any better than he has here, and even then this is no easy matter to understand it to the level he is trying to convey it. Like he said, it's important to connect our experiences to a higher narrative otherwise our moral compass is basically inactive, and this causes us to lose sight of whatever it is we consider to be our "ultimate goal" and can potentially drive us to a state of guilt or regret. Star Wars is such an engaging film because of the writers capability to make these connections and allow for the potential for the audience to do the same. that you can say in a sense, the film gives comfort to someone who has otherwise lost a sense of righteousness and justice in the world from the experiences they have had.

Speaking of Star Wars, I realized after playing Capcom vs SNK that one of the best mirrors to Luke Skywalker is Rock Howard from the SNK universe. It’s just perfect really, he’s a protagonist you’re inevitable to sympathize with. His emotion is very compelling, and his father is corrupt but powerful, possibly more than him. But his own power is fueled with some protagonist’s anguish, AND he’s trained by someone other than his dad. It’s almost too perfect!

Eventually my understanding of the greater narrative became increasingly tied to many, if not almost all aspects of a Christian worldview. last night while chatting with friends, we began playing a 3d game of hot and cold that involved levels of abstraction. instead of guessing an object you would guess a category. for example, let's say the category is food. if you said consumables, id say "in", to tell you to go into a less abstract category. if you said drink, I'd say "hot" because you're at the right level of abstraction and you're in the right line of thinking. if you said fast food id say "out" to tell you to go to a higher level of abstraction. its nerdy, but it was a very fun thought experiment that made it clearer how humans see the world by showing us how uncomfortable we are with thinking at high levels of abstraction. instead of the tangible object level where you would normally guess things like dog or car in a guessing game.

Except the Force is a Taoist concept and Jedi are literally Buddhists. Claiming "Star Wars is Christian" is a gross oversimplification of Star Wars and even semi-blasphemous to Christianity (because the Taoist/Buddhist elements contradict Christianity on a fundamental level). There are obviously Christian elements in it, but there are elements of other religions in it as well. Looking at Star Wars with an exclusive atheist/Christian/Buddhist/etc lens is a complete misread. Applying this logic to something like Lord of the Rings would make much more sense.

Its funny how you related Greek plays and Star Wars because as a lover of both (I studied a lot of theatre) one of the biggest questions behind Greek plays is whether or not we have free will or do the Gods control us? @S Z Rogue One is so overrated, even as a somewhat overshadowed flick. It didn't need to be told for one, and the movie we got had me not knowing any of the main characters or events, and only really remembering the ending with Vader slaying rebels. There are many elements of the Christian mythos in Star Wars. However, the closest thing Star Wars comes to irl in a spiritual sense is Hinduism. While Anakin might be a obvious Lucifer reference and Luke might be Christ on a cross, the concepts of a great energy that surround and bind us together that we can learn to divine the will of the universe are taken straight out of Eastern religions. The jedi are basically Buddhist monks. The concept of internal balance and the Yin and the Yang are all integral to the themes of Star Wars without being directly stated.

Luke Skywalker is not the Jesus character in whole, the argument would be that he is, at best, a prophet. Anakin Skywalker was the child with no father created in the womb of the mother with holy intervention from an all powerful being (the Force). Anakin/Darth Vader ultimately failed the tests with the Satan which Jesus passed, in that Vader turned to the dark side for part of his life. There is also the view that Vaser's return to the Light side at the end of ROTJ, is related to the crucifiction in a few ways. 1st, Vader is like the Thief on the Cross story in that he came to God (the Light side of the Force) just before his death, at a time when it has been argued, Vaser was at his lowest point in his life, facing the task of killing his own son (Abrahamic tones) or be killed by his son for the "Greater Good" of the rise of the Sith and the Dark side and cursing his son with the burden and suffering of a Darth. There are Jobian tones throughout with the overall Galactic suffering that seems to be going on everywhere in one form or another. If memory serves, there are at these a couple Universities or Colleges that offer or did offer a course or two on the study of Star War from a religious point of view so clearly this is not just the ramblings of Jordan Peterson.

Star Wars was great because it had universal human themes (hero’s journey, good vs evil) as well as political themes (the threat of fascism, the clear reference to the Vietnam war with rebels being Viet Cong, post-911 ideas of trading freedom for security in the prequels). Disney only care about iconography (seeing the same characters over and over again) not the underlying messages.

Why don't people actually pay attention to George Lucas, he has stated that he pulled concepts from almost all major world religions, philosophy, and history. Star Wars isn't Christianity for atheist nerds, its a space opera using; multiple religions, historical events, and philosophy as a basis.

Did you ever disobey your parents, death penalty. You clearly haven't ever read the bible... It's murder, genocide, hatred, and cruelty cover to cover. It literally forbids the majority of things that are common in humanity, things which are natural human instincts. The most common being the human sex drive in modern times. It also demonized curiosity if said curiosity goes against biblical teachings. I mean, it's so blatant, how can anyone not know all this.

@SubArc Adventures Three weeks ago, a group of pastors from my area from various churches went to a city hall meeting. At said meeting the demanded that all LGBT people and non-christians be lined up against a wall and shot. Many churches may not be as extreme anymore, but all of that is in the Bible. So unless you change the Bible, that is the core of Christianity, even if not all churches adhere to it verbatim.

Star Wars died when Dave Filoni was accepted into the franchise and his works were given canon priority. His work makes SW a simple, linear story, and acts in a fairly black and white way. Before Disney arrived, it had higher canonicity than other more interesting works that presented deeper stories. Anakin Skywalker once had the burden of deciding whether to save his troops or the population of a planet. The republic was shown to cause as much, if not more damage than the secessionist movement, and all 'evil schemes' were part of the bigger sith plot for galactic domination

I had many friends doing so and they were thinking it was God, but it wasn't, God is holy, and He would always call you back to Him and repentance. Jesus said: For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Don't be that man but be the one that will be saved. You and your family. they too have a soul and need the saviour Jesus Christ, because we all are sinners and are worthy of condemnation and punishment in hell. Don't you or your loved one go there. If you have any question, ask me, I would gladly answer you. Give your life to Jesus and He will give you eternal life that starts from now. There is so much meaning and love and peace and meaning when you have God with you always. It's one thing to believe in God or think you believe it and another live with Him and have friendship and relationship with Him. I am what you would call a truth seeker, and this made me very interested in ontology, epistemology, and theology. And thats ok but what is not ok is not even trying to reconcile the contradictions and instead go "Ill ask God in heaven, there are just somethings we cannot understand in this universe until we see him, have faith until then" which, one is false because if we are able to observe something how is it possible that it is beyond our capacity to know (i would understand if you said i cannot understand infinity or nothingness and those are things we cannot observe directly in the universe i.e. we dont actually see inside a black hole, or we cant see past the big bang. so epistemologically i think that way of thinking is horseshit) but also use perception and the vocabulary to disguise ignorance and irrationality as faith. the value of faith is not null but it is not a virtue in excess. Im closer to believing that consciousness is God and we are all God experiencing ourselves subjectively . this to me makes more sense than the Christian god. This is a eastern belief but its one i discovered on my own during a lsd trip. during that trip my main goal was asking the question who am I? and after thinking and thinking i had a ecstatic moment where i realized I AM. i felt it and the meaning in my bones, the I AMness was overwhelming. and one of the reason i believe the bible was heavily influenced by psychedelics is because the first time God appeared to moses he said I AM. few questions for you tho. Have you tried any drugs? Do you drink? Smoke? Your words have not blesses me as i know them for what they are but hopefully u where blessed with curiosity and go experience it for yourself.

I really do not buy the argument that "Star Wars is Christianity for atheist nerds." There are thematic and philosophical connections, but according to Peterson essentially everything (including the origin of reason and language itself) goes back to the Christian Bible, and therefore everything is essentially a form of Christianity, which I find to be absurd nonsense. Christianity has informed the development of Western culture, but so has culture and human nature informed the development of Christianity. The ideas contained within Christianity predate Christianity and would fundamentally exist with or without it. Calling everything a form of Christianity is a gross over-generalization and gives religion undeserved, infinite credit over all human thought and accomplishment.

Couldn't have put it better myself. This also creates a little discrimination towards atheists, which are hinted as being somewhat "lesser" individuals than the blessed christians. This would also imply that everything before 0 a.d. was pretty much worthless (culture wise), which is of course preposterous. I'm not saying religion is bad, and being born in a very christian country I can aknowledge the way Christianity shaped western society, but I'm tired of seeing it labeled as the source of anything worth considering.

JBP started restricting his diet when he noticed that his daughter experimented with restricting her diet to attempt to combat her lifelong, rare, and poorly understood ailments - I think it was autoimmune in nature for her and JBP - and they nearly completely went away; he noticed the same phenomena with himself once he adopted a similar diet. Whether or not it works for other people is something each individual has to figure out for themselves but for them it was an attempt to combat illnesses that seemingly stemmed from diet, or could at least be curbed by a restricted diet. He, and especially his daughter, have talked about it a fair bit and they think it may stem from their body's being allergic to most foods. As far as I have seen, they have not tried persuading the restrictive diet to people unless those people have some unknown ailments or autoimmune diseases that are poorly understood and slowly cutting out certain foods seems to improve their health.

Star Wars is not at all Christianity for athiest nerds. Lmao. Jordan needs to read the books and rewatch the films. Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are not anything like Satan or jesus. They're characters are not even comparable in terms of archetypes either. The main story of star wars is also nowhere similar to the Bible narratives. Like at all. The dark side is not inherently evil. And the light side is not inherently good. They are very grey. And diverse. As we see in clone wars with Ahsoka, and especially in legends (which I know Disney doesn't consider canon). As for the characters and the world's "meta narratives" George Lucas said that he took inspiration from every single religion on earth and tried to mesh them out and uron out the core ideas but he dumbed it down to take only the base primary aspects. So even then it still doesn't resemble Christianity. It technically resembles every religion. But again only the most basic aspects of them. The force isn't a God or deity. It's a mysterious "force" that exists within the universe. Not outside the universe. Not a deity and not a God. It has no gender, no corporal form, and is not good or evil. The force is both good and evil. Which is why it has 2 sides. Ie light and dark. At the same time. Even the main story isn't resembling anything close to the biblical narratives. There is no ressurection, the chosen one is not akin to christ, the Jedi order was blinded by their own ideas of "good" and "order" they let chaos litterly run their whole ranks for years right under their noses. There is no ultimate battle of pure good or evil. Vader always had good in him, and he stands against palpatine in the end proving he always had that part of him. Qui Gon and Yoda come back as force ghosts to confirm this. Meaning he was never wholistically evil. The characters are not just black and white "bad" or "good" and the even the chosen ones (Luke and Leah) are not perfect like christ at all. They are deeply flawed. The jedi order also takes children and borderline kidnaps them at times due to them not believing in pro creation and being abstract monks blinded by dogma. Whjch is why the new order was created after the "Vader incident" to prevent another Palpatine or Vader after the jedi counsel admitted their core beliefs were flawed and led to anakin's downfall I the 1st place and paved the way for Palpatine to make Vader. One of the reasons vader fell was because he knew that the Jedi order (despite claiming to be wise and stoic) was duped for years by the very leader who turned him against Obi Won. That's one of the reasons he ultimately left (along side the obvious reasons like Palpatine showing anakin visions of Padme's death). Because he knew the relationship needed to be kept in the shadows (secret) and the counsel would never intervene. Handing Palpatine anakin into his lap practically. It's just simply not just "Christianity for nerds" when you look at the plot, the characters, and the overall narratives. It's a story about morality and philosophy and family. But not Christian morality, not the typical Christian philosophy, and certainly not your typical Christian family values either.

I find it interesting that two of the biggest movie franchises (Lord of the Rings and Star Wars) can show many good Christian concepts. As Jordan said about Luke Skywalker and then you have Frodo who takes up his cross in the carrying of the ring. This is by far the best explanation JBP has made regarding this. Usually I feel as if he is just talking without saying anything when it comes to religion and god. I think that's partly because well, I'm not as intelligent as JBP by a long shot and also that JBP may genuinely struggle to explain this properly without making it too abstract. I do agree with JBP though now that I finally understand what he is saying, but I still think he is making this too complicated for what you would normally consider "religious" people. "Normal" religious people are very unlikely to have thought this through and genuinely believes in a god that exists and created everything, being much closer to religious fundamentalism or creationism in the worst cases. Honestly, I think atheists are more likely to come to this conclusion than religious people because we have less inhibitions that usually hinders the more religious people from ever thinking for themselves far enough. It's undoubtedly an interesting discussion. JBP is a gift to our society.

The way I would compare the two is this: Anakin represents the 1st Adam that was tempted by Palpatine and gave into temptation to achieve Godhood, and therefore fell. Luke, on the otherhand, represents the 2nd Adam; who when he was tempted by palpatine overcame temptation and was victorious!

The issue here is that Jordan Peterson tends to be imprecise with how he refers to Christianity in relation to archetypical systems. Christianity is an example of many of these legitimate phenomena, but JP often refers to Christianity as being the definition and quintessential form of these things; therefore, he presents Christianity as uniquely and profoundly true using a priori arguments, largely through semantic trickery.
