The reason R2D2 is so unique is because he's never had a routine memory wipe. All droids develop personality quirks after time, so they're given memory wipes to reset them. Anakin refused to have R2's memory wiped, so by the time of Ep 2, he's developed a strong personality and ingenuity that other droids don't have (the memory wipe issue even comes up in an episode of the Clone Wars TV series). By the time of Ep 6, R2 has gone more than 40 years without an annual memory wipe. CP3O, however, receives several memory wipes, therefore doesn't remember everything that happens during the saga. So in Ep 4, 3PO legitimately doesn't remember Obi-Wan, while R2 knows exactly who he is.

Anakin’s story is probably one of the best tragedies done in sci-fi. It’s something we all wish we couldn’t relate to but a lot of us do. Because we all think of ourselves as good people. We try to be good people but sometimes life puts us in position when we are forced to drift that line. It’s a story of in Lucas’s words “How does a good person become evil.”

I like how this movie showed that when people see someone struggling in life and choose to ignore that person's problems, it can cause that person to feel all alone and have no choice but to commit horrible sins to make things better for themselves. The jedi were portrayed in that way in this movie in my opinion, they were ignorant towards Anakin and lacked faith in him which caused him to question his allegiance to them and the jedi not helping Anakin, made him feel all alone and that's what caused him to take drastic action in order to save Padme, even though that backfired on him!

As promised from previous reaction: Just a few months before his death, Christopher Lee aka Count Dooku told the reporter that the he and Anakin's fight scene was drastically different than what was shown. Per Lee, during the first scene, Dooku taunts Anakin, telling Anakin that Dooku hired the raiders to kidnap and slowly torture to death Anakin's mother. Then after Anakin goes berserk and "disarms" Dooku, Dooku is in the process of telling Anakin that he did it at the order of Sidious/Palpatine but Anakin cuts Dooku's head off before he can finish. After they filmed the scene, they thought it was going to be too dark, so they changed it. It slightly changes the scene and why Anakin would go Dark Side, along with how far ahead Palpatine planned in advance and manipulated people.

He doesn't care nearly as much about the cannon lore as fans do, and he doesn't deserve to have a say in what is true cannon, especially after selling the rights. Also I'm sure Grievous would run from Windu, but Windu, Yoda, and even Obi Wan are a bit ahead of most other masters, never mind knights. If we are simply judging Grievous' combat strength on how he matched up against Obi Wan then it would be odd to think he couldn't take on average Jedi especially knights. People somehow frequently under-rate Obi Wan's combat prowess, despite his ability to consistently take on opponents that should be outside his weight-class. You gotta appreciate the genious of Palpatine's plan, as evil as it is. Ep.1- he stakes a crisis on his homeworld that results in the old chancellor's dismissal AND generates sympathy for him to get elected. Ep. 2- as his term is coming to an end, he provokes another crisis that grants him emergency powers. He does that by having his new apprentice, Dooku, hijack genuine movement dissatisfied at the corrupt state he's turned the Republic into (and thus the most likely to oppose his takeover) and force it into separatist war with the Republic. It also lets him create an army secretely loyal to him, and him only. Clone Wars and Ep. 3. - both Separatist and Republic societies are exhausted by incredibly destructive war and more willing to accept any regime as long as it means peace. The Jedi are spread thin as field commanders across the galaxy, with Palpatine's soldiers (whom they grew to trust) at their backs... Also, Jedi being in charge of war on both sides (Dooku used to be an esteemed Jedi Master) makes population blame them for the war. On top of that, he gets the Jedi to commit actual treason by spying on him and trying to overthrow him/murder him. Additional brilliance point- in the ancient history the Sith waged many open wars against the Republic and Jedi. This is what the Jedi thought the clone wars was. It always failed- but under Palpatine, it's the Republic that destroyed the Jedi.

Evil is relative. The books are far more detailed than the movies which, as movies do, concentrate certain things and omit others. The Old Republic, to be honest, is corrupt to the bone and the Jedi are a "do as we say" inquisition style police force that has no patience with "alternate views" - hence the "Dark Jedi" and their joining with the Sith. The universe seeks balance. :) And, yes, Palpatine's plan was eloborate and worked out quite well - the first time the Sith (pre and post Darth Bane) managed to get the upper hand. Didn't last, though. :)

@@Johnadams20760 - That's right to a point. While there was a lot of time between the movies, the books kept coming. And the Old Republic background was only ever hinted at back in the classical episodes as the empire was already around. When they did episode I the content clashed a bit with the books. The classical episodes didn't really dive into the history of the empire or the Jedi (with only Obi Wan and Yoda around anymore) that left room for the books to create a somewhat less idealistic view on the Jedi as a whole. There is a brief glimpse of that when Mace Windu tries to just kill the chancellor and disregards the law, echoing the Jedi mantra: WE are the law. :)

So in a way yes Anakin did die. But then years later when Luke saved him he basically resurrects the good man Anakin Skywalker he used to be long ago and he was no longer Darth Vadar.... Kind of reminds me of Saul from the Holyy bible. God's chosen people feared him. On the road to Damascus he saw Hesus and lost his physical sight. Days later hid phsyical sight did return. But it took him being physically blind amoung other things to finally see the TRUTH AND THE LIGHT. And he was Saul no longer. And he our beloved brother Paul the Apostle. In Jesus Christ we can find salvation, Redemption forgiveness and mercy from our Heavenly Father God for our sins. And in him we are born again and made into a new man or woman in Jesus Christ. So for me and other Christians we also go through a spiritual transformation when we are born again spiritually when we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. We become a new man or woman in Christ. So for us, it's perfectly understandable why Saul ceased to be and he became Paul. A completely different man. No longer our enemy. But our brother in Christ. You can often find in movies even in Narnia and other films examples that we Christians can see another storyline and representation of our Lord or someone we know in the Bible

The reason Obi-Wan warns Anakin not to try it when he has the high ground, is because he knows how to defend against an attack like that, thanks to his use of that low ground attack against Darth Maul in Ep. 1. Also, to understand why Anakin does all this shit, you have to try to see things from his perspective. He left his mother at like age 8, which is far older than most younglings are accepted by the Jedi, so he already has a deep-seated fear of never seeing his mom again, and of losing people he admires and cares for, like when Qui-Gon was killed soon after freeing him. His childhood as a slave was pretty bleak, and then he's left with only one guy, Obi-Wan, who initially didn't want him along and is training him out of respect for his dead master. Kids can pick up on that kind of thing. Then, as a teenager, he's having to deal with Obi-Wan who is a strict master as that is normally how Padawans are trained since they don't normally have all the emotional baggage that Anakin has, hence his rebellious teen angst, combined with the fear of losing someone else he cares about, Padme, after the attempt on her life. He's angry at Obi-Wan for treating him like a child and not listening to his feedback, and he's old enough to understand the importance of "The Prophecy" that he is the Chosen One of, so he's got a bit of an inflated ego from that and instead of his mentor talking through things with him, he reprimands him. Then, he starts having nightmares of his mom dying (which it has been posited that Darth Sidious was projecting to him via the Force), and he blames the Jedi for keeping him busy on security detail as the reason he couldn't get to her in time (and growing up on Tatooine he knows how savage the Tuskens are). One can see why Anakin is having a hard time at this point. Couple this with the Jedi's diminishing control of the Force thanks to Darth Sidious weakening the Light Side through his fomenting the war with the CIS, which spreads fear and anger throughout the galaxy, and the Jedi are struggling to keep up appearances as the ever-wise and benevolent organization they portrayed themselves as, so Anakin starts to see the cracks in the facade. He also sees the corruption in the Republic and the hypocrisy of the Jedi, in allowing the slave trade in the Outer Rim to exist, and how those worlds are exploited by the Core worlds to enrich themselves. After the events of Ep. 2 Obi-Wan realizes that he needs to be less of a dick and more of a friend to Anakin, and during the Clone Wars the two do indeed become like brothers, saving each other numerous times in battles against evil. During the events of the series, he encounters representations of the Force on Mortis, where "The Son", the representation of the Dark Side, shows him visions of a terrible future (of Darth Vader specifically), and Anakin is so horrified by these premonitions that he willingly accepts the power of the Dark Side to keep them from becoming a reality. Ultimately his memories of this encounter are erased and he remains a Jedi, but the potential was shown that he sees the Dark Side as nothing more than a means to an end, not as an "evil" power to be avoided. Combined with his frustration with the patience required to master the Force and with how he sees the Jedi Council holding him back, he is particularly susceptible to the Dark Side at this stage. Finally in Ep. 3, the Jedi push too far in requiring him to be a spy on another of his mentors, Palpatine, which he views as an egregious breach of trust, and also evidence of the Jedi's corruption and desire for power, real or imagined. Being kept purposefully in the dark about matters, and then demanding he betray a friend's trust further divorce him from the Jedi way of thinking. His ego doesn't do him any favors either when he is allowed as an observer on the Council but not made a Master, despite his skill, power, and heroic deeds during the war, and is treated like a child again by Mace Windu. He only trusts Obi-Wan at this point and is sorely disappointed when his friend and mentor basically goes along with the Council in wanting him to spy on the chancellor. Yoda also betrays his trust when he goes to him after having the nightmares of Padme dying (also surmised to be planted by Palpatine) and Yoda tells him essentially "nah bro, emotions don't mean anything, just let go of those things and everything will be fine", which obviously he can't do, so he feels again that the Jedi just don't care about him. This is why when he tries to do the right thing and tells Windu about the Chancellor being the Sith Lord, and then goes to make sure the Chancellor isn't killed (because he is so desperate to save Padme at this point that he will do anything to gain the power to do so), he sees Mace Windu doing the same thing he chided himself for doing: summarily executing a political prisoner, and his faith in the Jedi Code is broken. This isn't helped by Mace's particular Jedi style (he has a purple saber because he is able to draw on both the Light and Dark sides without being corrupted, and is very aggressive), and Anakin decides in the heat of the moment that the Jedi are not worth his allegiance anymore if they're willing to do all this bad shit that they berate him for doing, essentially deciding that they don't practice what they preach. He has misgivings afterwards, but is so fearful of losing Padme and of losing the chance to learn how to, he pledges himself to Palpatine, because again, he sees the Dark Side as a tool, not as a corrupting force. He goes to Mustafar to carry out the execution of the Separatist leaders, which he knows isn't exactly right, but does so anyways. The moment on the balcony overlooking the lava, you can see tears running down his face, because he can see that he's straying from the ideals he once lived by, but he can't stop himself because of his near obsession with saving his secret wife now. As soon as he sees Obi-Wan step off of Padme's ship, he feels that she betrayed him because she was the only person he told where he was going, hence the choking, and then when Obi-Wan essentially writes him off immediately as a bad guy without even trying to help him, he feels even more betrayed. At the end, when he is lying there on the lavabank, all of the emotion that the Jedi have taught him he needs to suppress comes out in that "I HATE YOU!", and part of that is Obi-Wan's fault because again, he just wrote him off as a lost cause as soon as he did one bad thing. "Only a Sith deals in absolutes", he says, not caring that that too is an absolutism. As Vader he also hates what has been done to him by the Emperor, who he comes to understand has tricked him into doing a lot of things that benefit the Sith Lord, and does actually attempt to kill him, but the Emperor defeats him and leaves him broken on a backwater planet, saying that if he survives, he can return to his side as his apprentice, which of course, he does, through sheer hatred. It isn't until the end of Ep. 6 that he sees in Luke the Jedi he used to be, and that letting the Emperor do to his son what was done to him is unacceptable. That's why ultimately he redeems himself when he throws the Emperor down that shaft and saves Luke. He feared unleashing a new evil upon the galaxy, and this time his fear led him to do the right thing. Anakin Skywalker is a tragic character, and to fully appreciate him one must understand that he didn't just decide to be evil one day. A combination of factors over a long period of time made it happen. If in that same situation, could you really say you'd react any differently? The really sad irony is that Sidious couldn't have helped him save Padme. He lied to him to gain his trust. The Sith method of achieving 'immortality' is that of Essence Transference, where they invest another person or object with their consciousness (something the Jedi know about, as they actually have in the Archives an object containing an old Sith Lord's essence). This method would only work for a force-user, which Padme was not. Same with the Jedi method: becoming a Force ghost (like Obi-Wan and Yoda did in the original films). Again, only for a force-user, so Anakin would have lost her anyway, unless he had chosen NOT to listen to Sidious which is what actually led to her death :P

It's a fan theory. Some versions of it are that Palps saw the vision too, but knew that it was only a possible future and he'd have to manipulate events to get there. Another version is that Palps knew about the marriage from his contacts on Naboo, him being the former senator from the planet, and did a mix of bluffing and subtle force manipulation to push Anakin to where he wanted him. I think it's a bit of a mix of these - Palps saw the vision and sent an edited version of it to Anakin, then dropped the "tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise" on him, leaving him ready to be manipulated into joining the dark side through persuasion and manipulation. Side note, Darth Plagueis was Palpatine's master, so he was speaking from experience about how Plagueis was killed by his apprentice.

The irony of Anakin turn to the dark side and Padme death. I’ve always looked at it like Palpatine had a hand in it. Anakins turn was to stop Padme death. And her death was b/c of what Anakin was willing to do. I have always liked the visual of Padme death synchronized with the rebirth of Anakin into Vader. To me I felt like maybe Palpatine took Padme life to same Anakin. Like a life for a life. The losing the will to live never felt right. Glad you enjoyed

The reason Palpatine was able to take out so many masters at once, but not Windu is because his saber style is specifically designed to counter the forms that most Jedi use. He doesn’t banter with the flashies, he just goes for the weak spot and an immediate kill; whereas most Jedi are trying to incapacitate or disarm their opponents. Mace Windu has a purple saber because he’s at balance between light and dark sides. He’s able to use anger, but in a righteous way, and Palpatine has never fought someone who is a Guardian (duel focused) that has come to peace with the dark side of the force as well. Windu’s force ability is also to see “shatterpoints” which is basically the ability to intuitively know where the weakest point of a person or structure is. Mace Windu and The Skywalker bloodline are the only Jedi in existence that would have even a chance against him. (But that’s also all info from Legends which was retconned for the sequel trilogy)

the notion that the Legends were "retconned" is false. to be clear, the Expanded Universe operated under levels of canon, the lower levels bowing in favor of the higher levels, essentially nothing was really canon unless specifically stated in the movies, the G-Canon, the highest level. all this was organized and cleared up with the introduction of the Legends, the lower levels of Canon were now legends and only the true canon, the Movies George had made, was left. so to say that they are "no longer canon" is false, since they never really were.

If you‘re sad, that it’s over, there is a tv show called Star Wars the Clone Wars. It is considered by many people the best thing, that Star Wars ever brought out. It has great world building, great new characters and fleshes out the relationships between already existing characters to an extent that movies can’t even dream of. If you want more Anakin and Obi-Wan, watch the series. If you want to more R2-D2 and C-3PO, watch the series. If you want more of the Clones, General Grievous Yoda or the other Jedi and Sith, watch the series. *It is literally so good!* The universe is far from explored. You said you were thankful to experience this world, but there is so much more. You have no idea how big this universe is. I have waited a long time for THIS moment.... Yeah, basically, Lucas knew that technology was a LONG way away from creating his vision of the first part(trilogy) of the saga, so he began where he did(and even THAT wasn't up to his vision, but he "made due" and created what he could for the time). Watch "Empire of Dreams" for a better/longer explanation of what I mean. Also, you should watch the Clone Wars, Bad Batch, and Rebels animated series. You'll get a LOT of context for character development in them. I should warn you, though... the final 4 episodes of the Clone Wars series run concurrent to this movie. Meaning, they detail events going on at the same time as this movie, but from a different perspective. You might want to have tissues around for that... The Bad Batch begins right at the end of the Clone Wars, and generally takes place immediately after the end of the war. The overall timeline goes like this: Episode I, Episode II, The Clone Wars(movie and series), Episode III(with the final 4 episodes of Clone Wars interweaving with it), The Bad Batch(animated series), Solo, Rebels, Rogue One, Episode IV, Episode V, Episode VI, The Mandalorian(Live action series, takes place 9 years after Episode VI), Episode VII, Episode VIII, Episode IX. Coming in December, we have "The Book of Boba Fett" live action series, but I won't tell you where it fits in the timeline right now. That would be a spoiler. Next year, are several Live Action series, and the Bad Batch season 2. But don't discount the animated series... they are REALLY well done, both visually, and written wise. 20:50 - Remember, Palpatine is from the same planet(Naboo) Padme' was. I haven't trusted you since the day I met you. Right then, I said you shouldn't be trained....(think back to Episode I)... but maybe, just maybe, I was wrong.(insert obligatory Samuel L. With that in mind, notice here, as Padme' lay dying, so does Anakin.... and as Luke and Leia are born, so truly, is Darth Vader. 39:02 - No, Qui-Gon isn't alive.... but, if you watch the Clone Wars animated series, you will see that he learned how to (partially) manifest himself after death(like Obi-Wan did in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi). The thing I love about Star Wars is that it shows that you can be human and still live that same story, and to me it is awesome how you immediately went to examples out of your own life - that means you underatood the message of the movie, but also you are adding to its mythology in a way. I mean technically. It's a really good thing Anakin wasn't killed off by Obi-Wan. If he did kill him. His prophecy fulfillment would never have succeeded. Since ultimately without Anakin's help. Luke would just simply not have been able to take on Palpatine alone. So in the end Anakin did fulfil his prophecy and brought balance back. Also about Anakin killing Padme. It's actually talked about and almost accepted that Palpatine was actually the ultimate killer of Padme. Essentially what is believed is that, because Anakin was so critically injured he was dying. So Palpatine used Padme's life force for Anakin while he was being operated on in order to save him but in turn also killed her.

Anakin's greatest weakness is his fear of loss; he fears losing the ones he cares about...obviously as we know this started with his mother. In the Clone Wars he made both good and bad decisions that made him a heroic figure in some people's eyes and less so in other's eyes. Anakin lost comrades then as well but Obi Wan and Padme were the ones that mattered to him most. The three major Jedi Masters; Master Yoda, Master Mace Windu and the third Master Cin Drallig (who was supposed to have a scene in this film where he fought Vader and defended the Jedi Temple but it was taken out due to time restraints) they all had their own skills and their own views of Anakin. Yoda was probably the most balanced...always concerned about him but tried to give him the benefit of the doubt...kind of like Obi Wan. Master Windu was the best duelist and didn't overly trust Anakin, he could sense the darkness growing in Anakin but he couldn't tell where it was coming from. Master Drallig was cautious and more of a teacher but he was brilliant in using force abilities; when the rest of the Jedi went into space in the Clone Wars he was trusted to stay behind and protect the Jedi Temple. Drallig could sense Anakin had amazing potential but also recognised his fears made him very susceptible to manipulation.

Thanks to 8 I have no desire to see it. Plus I saw the synopsis on KZbin. It’s horrible. Although it’s pretty fresh to you so you won’t have decades to imagine their continued adventures and lives only to see that the powers that be only wanted to subvert your expectations. If you don’t have expectations you might not totally hate it, although you will find them incredibly repetitive. Different strokes for different folks but for me it ends with episode 6, followed by season one and two of Mando and frankly not sure if it will go past that. We will see 🤷🏻‍♂️

Never fear, the Star Wars franchise is alive and well, and the adventures don't end here. While I can't recommend movie Episodes 7-9, I do suggest you watch Rogue One, next. This is a stand alone movie not part of the Skywalker Saga, and it forms a bridge between what you've just watched, to what happens hours before Ep 4, A New Hope. If you wanted to take a deeper dive into this franchise which you seem to enjoy, watch the Clone Wars animated series. You'll get a very deep immersion of what happens during movies 2 and 3, and there are some very heart-breaking moments in those 7 seasons (probably not something you want to do a reaction to since it would take a long time to get through the series. You also have the live action show The Mandalorian, set in the Star Wars universe...but just a word of caution: if you really want to understand more about the Mandalorian culture, the you must watch TCW and Rebels. So you see, Trixie, there is still a much larger world for you to explore.
