You will NOT FIND the "old version" digitally ... so you have to move your behind in a shop to go and look for DVDs and study the details on the back. Oh and please STOP BEING NAIVE ABOUT DISNEY ... and current "megacorp intentions", because they WANT YOU to only get digital/streaming stuff ... so they can EDIT IT RETROACTIVELY (like taking Trump out of Home Alone 2) for political reasons.

"The Force will be with you, always." Fun Fact: The first movie to make over $300 million domestic box office. It was also the first movie to cross $500 million worldwide in its initial release. Action Star Fact: Stunt doubles were not used for the scene where Luke and Leia swing to safety in the Death Star. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher performed the stunt, shooting it in just one take. CGI Over Practical Fact: All the CGI was added in the late 90s and NOT part of the original release. I don't mind the changes, except for originally Han Solo (Harrison Ford) shot Greedo (Paul Blake) before the bounty hunter could do anything. Gun Enthusiast Fact: The weapons the stormtroopers used were essentially the Sterling L2A3 9mm SMG (sub-machine gun), a military weapon developed in the late 1940s in the U.K. and adopted by the British and Canadian Armies in the 1950s. The curved left entry side mounted magazine was removed, and that was as much as it was modified for the movie. The longer sandtrooper weapon was the MG-34 machine gun from Germany. Location Location Fact: The Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia. There is a town in Tunisia's rural south named Tataouine (Berber for "eyes") and George Lucas liked the name so much, he adopted it for Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) home world. Some of the interiors and the courtyard of Luke's house were filmed in a hotel in Matmata, Tunisia. One can visit this two-star hotel and see some pictures and the painted ceiling of what was used for the Lars' dining room. When Luke goes out of the farm, he appears in a flat deserted area, while the reality, when you get out of the hotel, there are a lot of other houses, small stone hills, and a lot of prickly pear cacti (a variety very common in Tunisia). The skeleton that C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) passes belongs to a Tatooine creature called a Greater Krayt Dragon. This artificial skeleton was left in the Tunisian desert after filming and still lies there. During filming of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones (2002), the site was visited by the crew once more and the skeleton was still there.

Additional fact re: the Luke/Leia swinging to safety, the stunt coordinator, when he did it to make sure it would work, felt the harness give a bit. Mark Hamill was like "Did I just hear it tear?" and the guy said, "Mark, please. I would never put you in harm's way." That's partly the reason they only did one take: the harness was broken, and the stunt coordinator didn't want to risk any more use of it. I think they were toward the end of the shooting day, which is why they didn't fix things and do it again or delay shooting the scene.

I was 13 years old in 1977 when I saw Star Wars in the Movie Theatre. The special effects were ahead of its time. The Movie was originally called Star Wars and did not get renumbered episode IV until Episode V The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980. George Lucas did not know if he would be allowed to make more Star Wars Movies. He started with the First Movie of his Middle Trilogy. Thats why the original trilogy is IV V and VI and then the prequels are I II III

One of my favorite scenes in this movie happens in the Cantina. Prior to the Cantina scene, we have learned a few things about the history of this universe . We know that a force exists, Jedi can use it, and they were some sort of knights. We know that Obi-Wan was once a Jedi. We know that the Jedi have some sort of magical powers. We have seen a light saber, but don’t really have a full idea of how it works, and what it does. A modern day film would have the characters explain what is going on. Star Wars shows you instead. Some punks pick a fight with Luke, throw him across the room, showing that he is vulnerable.Obi Wan, who had been trying to calm the situation, draws his saber in the blink of an eye. He cuts down both adversaries faster than they can fire a blaster. A severed arm lies on the floor. This *shows* what a Jedi is, that Obi Wan may look like an old man but is incredibly powerful, and that a lightsaber is a lethal weapon in skilled hands. They don’t explain this, they show it to you. The viewer is Luke - we are learning this as he is learning this.

And as a fan of yours i love seeing your first reaction to these amazing movies. This movie just brings us back to being kids, lost in the wonder and awesomeness of them. I saw you already have the other movies on Patreon. I think only Return of the Jedi is the worst off from some specialization changes. I do have files of what was actually shown in 77, 80, and 83 if youd like. Im right there with you when Uncle Owen says “thats what im afraid of” about Luke having too much of his father in him. You cannot overstate just how much this movie changed EVERYTHING. Every last part of the movie-making art LEAPED forward in quality like nothing anyone had ever seen before, and it wasn't even JUST the *making* of the movie - it was also the exhibiting of the movie. For example, Star Wars was the prime motivation for theaters to upgrade their sound systems - many of which were mono! - to the then-new "Dolby Stereo", which was essentially an early 4.1 surround sound system (3 front speakers, a rear "surround" speaker, and a subwoofer). In the opening scene, when the Star Destroyer flies overhead firing at Leia's ship, you not only HEARD it come from behind you, but you FELT every cannon blast and rumble - and that's just not how movies were prior to Star Wars. Of course, the sets, costumes, locations, props, visual effects, motion-control cameras, the musical score, and on and on were ALL so much better - with loving detail paid to each and every part - that it felt like everything that came before was crap by comparison. Movies are "rated" on their box office figures - the gross dollar amount of ticket sales - which Hollywood uses because inflation means that number will always go up, and they'll constantly have new records being sent - but really, that's a dishonest way to judge movies. If we judged movies by the NUMBER OF TICKETS SOLD, then Star Wars (A New Hope) would be - BY FAR - the all-time record-holder. Months into the movie's release, they were still selling out showing and there were still lines for tickets. Not weeks, but MONTHS! And many theaters kept Star Wars in their theater WAY longer - as much as 9 months - and many only removed it because they had contractual obligations to show newer movies being released. To say that it changed everything is not profound enough - it changed everything a LOT, and the impact on Hollywood was still being felt more than a decade later. The old Hollywood playbook had to be thrown away and a new one written. Dozens and dozens of other movies reference Star Wars in one way or another - no other movie has that much cultural impact.

The original release did not have an episode number. It was just Star Wars. They added the Episode IV A New Hope part on the re-release of the movie. George was making changes to it almost immediately. The Disney+ versions are heavily altered, unfortunately. if you want to see them like they were originally you need a VHS (which is not wide screen, so not actually what the film looked like in '77) the early DVD, or my preferred version the widescreen laserdiscs. You can also look for fan edits like the de-specialized editions. And there is a 4k version that fans scanned from a 35mm print.

In release order. All right, that's the right thing to do. Imagine in the 70's a movie that starts with a space battle of that level and in which the first important character we are introduced to is such a villain as Darth Vader, with laser beams, robots, holograms, light speed travel.... It was awesome, epic, for all of us who were kids at the time. I read a novel adaptation, and the reason for Obi Wan to let himself be defeated, if I remember correctly, was to create a distraction so that Luke and the others could escape.

Fantastic reaction and great comments, it really came across that you "get" the original trilogy Star Wars and the magic of it. :) (Well, I've only seen the reaction to Ep IV yet, but I'm not worried about your reaction to V and VI.) As a pretty much lifelong Star Wars original trilogy (OT) fan, it was absolutely heartwarming to see. I grew up watching the OT, starting at age 6 (in 1980) with Ep IV, then Ep V a year or two later, and then at age 9 I got to watch Ep VI in a theater (the other two were on VHS). I kept watching the OT many many times as I grew up, and well into my late teens I'd watch all three movies once a week, once every two weeks, once a month and so on, and my best estimate is that I've watched the OT something 300+ times.

This has always been my favorite sci fi universe. My dad has seen all of these in theaters and introduced them to me when I was 5. I apreciate the effort you put in trying to find the original cut, I was fortunate to grow up with the VCR trilogy set, everyone wants them to re-release the original if nothing else to enjoy the authentic special effects. Also, not many people can put themselves back in time and imagine what it would have been like to watch this when these special effects were top of the line. A lot of people are split on the Disney stuff, my biggest complaint has always been the way they handled the lore and extended universe. Rather than finding people who knew and loved the lore to help write new scripts, they decided to make everything non canon that was not included in the six original movies. Then wrote their own stories for the lore, most of which were not as good as the orignal comic, book, or videogame. Generally speaking, Dave Faloni and John Favreau do a good job of trying to write all the old canon back in though.

1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part. 2. The shrug Chewy gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 🤣 3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted. 4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to. 5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the droids, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub, the scene with Jabba the Hutt and other minor changes. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977. 6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over. 7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford didn't know his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked. 8. IMVHO the next two are the best of the series. Enjoy

Although it's too late for that, you could still do the "machete order" which is pretty popular as you get most of the shock reveals that you miss out on by doing either of the other orders and still end with Episode VI; that order goes IV, V, I, II, III, VI. There is also one very specific reason to do it which is, without spoiling, there's something they updated in Episode VI that doesn't really make sense if you haven't watched the prequels yet. Either way, you're a great reactor and this will be a great series. Edit: I don't think I was clear enough actually - not only does the change in VI not make full sense if you haven't watched the prequels, but the emotional impact of it is (in my opinion) MUCH higher if you've watched the prequels first. Release order isn't a "bad" way to watch, but you get more emotional payoff and a more complete end if you watch in an order that finishes on VI.

Just know that Han Solo shot first, and Greedo didn't even get a chance to shoot. Han executed him as soon as he had the drop on him. It made for a way cooler scene, and it shows Han Solo doesn't mess around.

Just a point to add: Rogue One adds perfectly to this movie (as a legit direct prequel, the end of Rogue One leads directly into the first scene of this) in that it finally gives an answer as to why the Death Star was constructed in such a stupid way after fans had been clowning on it for decades ROFLMAO

They gave more character to Stormtroopers in some of the newer movies, they tend to just have conversations about random things and make random comments, I mean I think the joke is if you were just standing around in uniform all day on a space station, what WOULD you talk about....could be literally anything. But they definitely use it specifically for comedy in the modern films, and that's probably where it came from for the games too. Or vice versa, there are definitely things the games implemented and explored before the movies did. But I'm just saying the Stormtroopers saying random things tends to be more of a Disney era Star Wars thing. Though, there is the moment in this film where they're talking when Obi-Wan comes up behind them and distracts them with the Force. I think some of that DNA is definitely there, I wonder if someone saw that and thought it was a good way to use them.

you need to watch some sci-fy classics like 2001, Logan's Run, Planet of the Apes, and Alien to get a better idea of the mid to late 1970's. Just to make this movie George Lucas had to create his own special effects company, Industrial Light and Magic. Also, the Wookies, because of their size and strength were hunted by the Empire and sold as manual labor slaves.

The reason for the Stormtroopers couldn't shoot was because Darth Vader ordered them to miss so Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie and the droids could escape so they can be tracked to the Rebel base.

And Obi Wan's comment on the blast points being so "precise" wasn't meant to imply that the storm troopers were great marksmen. He was referring to the fact that sand people wouldn't know where to target the crawler. But the storm troopers would be able to assess where best to hit it in order to disable it. They weren't wasting shots shooting at the armored areas, they were going for the tracks, the engine, and other mechanically weak points that would force it to stop.

C-3PO is a drama queen and always remains so. 6:30 interestingly, while the moving 'Dewback' was added later, there was a stationary version of the creature in the background of the original scene. 14:58 It later becomes a running joke that they can't shoot straight. that is rather necessary otherwise our heroes would have been shot to pieces before they even got out of the Death Star. 15:43 Star Wars was a U rated film, certainly in the UK. Yet it has burned out skeletons and suggestions of torture and truth drugs.

Don’t let KZbin nonsense tell you the franchise is over. It’s alive and well. Watch the shows and all the films and decide for yourself. People are just whining because they didn’t get what they want or being haters for clicks. But Star Wars is a massive enough franchise to like some things and not others just fine.

There isn't any way to over exaggerate the way what seemed like the whole world lost its collective mind over this film. Think about the biggest hype you've ever seen in fads and fashion, and then multiply it by everyone. There were trash rip-offs and meaningless space references and ridiculous cameos -- in every single walk of life, not just the media. It approached cultish levels, but you'd find ubiquitous references even in churches and schools. It pretty well only got more intense up until Jedi came out. The security measures taken for the second movie's scripts are still legendary in Hollywood, as I hear tell. You might not even be able to imagine, really.

Ok... why is the first Star Wars called "Episode 4"? Here is why... From the late 60's on through the mid 70's the movie industry had gone dark and gritty... with anti-hero's, disaster films, prison movies became all the rage... America was going through the tumult of both Viet Nam and the Civil Rights movement. Young men were coming back in body bags from the other side of the world, and political and social leaders were getting assassinated at home. Well known Rock Stars, Blues Singers, and other celebrities the youth idolized were dying of drugs and alcohol. America was not in the mood for light, upbeat movies. George Lucas wanted to change that. In the early 70's George Lucas began working on a concept that was based on, in part, the Flash Gordan Saturday Serials he grew up watching as a kid. He appreciated the art of the day, movies, music, etc... but he felt the need for a rebalancing. He felt the need for another more positive voice in a sea of negative gritty movies, for the new youth of America to look up to. He wanted a vast, sprawling story of good and evil... clear hero's and villains. So he began wrighting a Space Saga that spanned decades and multiple generations. He wanted to introduce an concept that had been lost within the movie industry in recent years... "The Hero's Journey" He knew his long space saga would have to be 3+ hours, or broken up into multiple movies. This had never been done before. He approached every company he could think of and they all turned him down. Sci-fi was OUT in the early-mid 70's. Especially a "kids movie". Finally 20th Century Fox agreed to finance his movie. They had budget left over for 1976 release and needed a "filler" movie. So George was granted 11 million dollars to make his film, BUT it had to be a max of 120 minutes. George could NOT film his entire story, so he took the part in his long story that could stand alone on it's own, while being exciting and daring... just like the Flash Gordan Series he watched as a kid. This eventually became the script for Star Wars. Because George had to literally invent new technology, special effects, COMPUTER CONTROLED cameras... NONE of this had been done before... the release date was stretched from 1976 to the summer of 1977. The intro crawl allowed George to give the audience a taste of what he felt as a kid watching Flash Gordon. At the beginning of each Flash Gordan episode, there was always a short recap of what happened the week before, to catch the audience up on what came before... and then the show would plunge you right into the action. This is why Star Wars begins the way it does... George didn't have the time or the budget, so he simply used the opening crawl to explain just enough of the past, that the audience was "up to speed" as the action began. I watched Star Wars in 1977 as an excited 9 year old boy. NOTHING could prepare the world for Star Wars. People stood in line for up to 2 days, camping out in line, slowly making their way to the front door to get a chance to see the movie. This was long before the huge movie complexes with multiple theaters. Most small towns had a single theater... some had up to 2 whole theaters under a single roof. So the lines were very long for the first few months. Star Wars changed everything. So... 20th Century Fox agreed to more movies. George could FINALLY tell his whole space saga story. But there was a problem. He had started the first movie "in the middle" of his grand plan, thinking it would be a one shot. So... in 1979 he re-released Star Wars and "Star Wars, Episode 4, A New Hope". I watched in at the Drive-in theater as an 11 year old with my aging uncles and grand parents who had never seen it... they were also blown away. In 1980 he released Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back. And in 1983 he released Episode 6, The Return of the Jedi. So he finished the "middle part" part of his story with these 3 movies. After many years of planning... starting in 1999 we all got to FINALLY got to see Episode 1 through Episode 3. This portion of the story is referenced in the original movie... "Years ago you served my father in the clone wars..." and "I was once a Jedi Knight like your father.." and "I want to learn the ways of the force and become a Jedi like my father"... ALL THESE THINGS... we finally got to see in "The Prequal" movies. And at last, after Disney purchased Lucas Films, we got to see the final 3 movies... Episodes 7, 8, and 9. This was "The Skywalker Saga". In only took 28 years and 9 movies to tell... lol. So... because nobody believed in George's vision. Because 20th Century Fox only gave him a limited budget for a single "Kids movie in Space", that forced George to tell his story out of sequence.. That is why the first movie in 1977 is now called "Episode 4, a New Hope." You are about to take a deep dive, 30 years in the making. Welcome... to a Galaxy far far way, a long time ago. May the Force be with you.

If you love this film, I would *HIGHLY* suggest you watch Episodes 5, 6 then 1, 2 and 3 and then *STOP.* If you love any of the characters in the first 6 films, don't watch the so-called "Sequel Trilogy" (more like Sequel Tragedy) and the "spin-off" films made by Di$ney. Those films by Di$ney essentially destroy and render every character, event, death, sacrifice and victory that happened in the first 6 films, null and void. As a longtime, hardcore fan of this franchise, I *_KNOW_* what I speak of. I have no reason to lie or be misleading. I've enjoyed several of your other movie reactions and I hope you enjoy this once-iconic franchise the way it was always meant to be, as portrayed in the first 6 films that were made by the creator of STAR WARS himself, George Lucas....👍👌✌️

It's also monumentally ironic how you feel perfectly entitled to express *_YOUR_* opinions and views on the new films but, as soon as someone says something you disagree with, you feel conveniently justified in your self-righteous condescension to judge, condemn, silence and criticize.
