Shane Warne may have it in for Mitchell Starc, but do the numbers back up his claim that Starc is as impressive as he is because he cleans up the tail? And who are the best bowlers to get rid of the lower order? And which ones are the best at removing the top order? All that in this.

I think Prashidh Krishna can be the guy we need. He got the pace, the height, and from what I've seen from the series against WI, he finally got the right length as well. Bumrah is pretty good against the tail with his yorker. He wasn't in the charts because he haven't taken 100 wickets yet.

Brilliant insight! I must admit, before watching this video, I had similar perceptions about Starc that Warne and others had as a tail-end destroyer, but I've always felt it's pretty important to have one of those kinds of bowlers in your team to make sure that you don't squander a good bowling start by giving runs to the tail.

What an amazing analysis! But, I wonder how the quality of the bowling contingent impacts the results of a bowler. An analysis like this assumes that a bowler is an independent entity. Bowlers like Warne, Cummins and McGrath benefit from other bowlers keeping it tight or taking early wickets thus adding pressure, while the spin contingent of Kumble, Harbhajan, Vettori and Shakib that has a poor average against the top 7 often had to play with an average bowling attack.
@JarrodKimberYT
@JarrodKimberYT 3 жыл бұрын
That is a very hard think to work out, we will have more advanced metrics into the future of things like this. But if you take Brett Lee, he had a very ordinary record with Warne, McGrath and Gillespie, but when they all moved on, he was far better. Murali often had ordinary bowlers around him, Hadlee too, their records are still outstanding. Fazal Mahmood another. In good bowling attacks you often had to fight for the ball in good periods, whereas most of the above bowlers you have mentioned would have automatically got the ball in those situations.

Great video, I have one theory for why subcontinental fast bowlers are poor against the tail, tailenders outside the subcontinent are just better batsmen than tailenders from subcontinent. Thats the impression I have atleast, likes of Cummins, Starc, Gillespie, Braod, Lee are far better batsmen than Gul, Zaheer, Shami, Bumrah Its the reason I find criticism of India's inability to get the opposition tail out cheaply to be lazy, Indian bowlers generally have to bowl to tailenders who can bat. Real problem is India's bowlers can't bat..
@JarrodKimberYT
@JarrodKimberYT 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, why then why is the average still so good, if Asian tails were so bad, why are the averages there even higher. They should be lower, so I don't think that one holds up.
@navneetjha52
@navneetjha52 3 жыл бұрын
@@JarrodKimberYT My theory is that if we look at career averages of tailenders dismissed by Asian bowlers we will see that opposition tailenders that they dismissed had higher batting averages than the averages of tailenders dismissed by non Asian bowlers Averages of tails in Asia is higher since Asian tails are ok at hame, opposition tails are better outside Asia but not terrible in Asia. Outside of Asia, Asian tails are terrible, non Asian tails are ok Comes from the impression of looking at India's tail, which is ok at home and hopeless outside Asia. Australia's tail is also better in Australia but not terrible in India

Hey Jarrod great videos you have on this channel, i got hooked in by stumbling across the Wagner one, watched over half your videos now. One thing i was interested in asking with your analysis is the two graphs, one going back to 1999 and the other the last 5 years is whether the fact that tail averages have increased on average in this period? Just asking this as i feel McGrath might have had easier pickings potentially than the current crop, which would make Anderson, Wagner, Abbas and Rabada's exploits against the tail in recent years even more impressive. I am not sure if the graph accounts for this it's hard to tell.

This was incredible but I have a question. You identified a seam bowling range, with better than average averages against 1-7, that features bowlers like Broad, Gillespie, Ishant Sharma, Umar Gul. What is Graeme Swann doing in this region when most of the other spinners are clustered around Kumble, Harbajan, Shakib and Yasir Shah? Stokes being the only seamer in this region indicates something unique about the kind of bowler that he is, is the same true of Swann?
@JarrodKimberYT
@JarrodKimberYT 3 жыл бұрын
Swann certainly a weird one, he's the Stokes of spinners. And I may do something on him one day because he's very interesting. I think Stokes is less unique (as a bowler), because part of it is because he's the fifth option. Stokes is often used as a last resort against top order batsman to break a partnership. But because he's often the quickest bowler in the team, they use him a lot more against the tail. As for Swann, I honestly don't know why he's so removed from the spinners. I thought that I'd find all the offspinners together in a clump that wasn't good against the tail, but Murali, Ashwin, Bhajji, Perera and Saeed Ajmal are all below the average against the tail. So I am stumped as why Swann is so poor against them.

Great video jarrod. I have a question for you: The one area of test cricket that has supposedly been improved by T20 is the fielding, but I was wondering (what with all the drops that have happened in the latest test), whether you know if fewer drops actually occur in test cricket nowadays rather than in the pre T20 period? Many thanks and keep doing the good work!
@JarrodKimberYT
@JarrodKimberYT 3 жыл бұрын
Well I don't know if you were watching the last Test, but I'd say Jadeja and Hazlewood's run outs are proof that fielding has changed. India fielders were not doing that ten years ago, and neither were huge fast bowlers. As far as I'm aware, there are no more catches dropped now than before, but I don't know if the catching rates have improved. Being that most chances in Tests aren't like those in T20, you wouldn't expected short leg or slips chances to change at all. What has changed is speed, throwing, athleticism, and those aren't as handy as you'd think at short leg.

Hey Jarrod, is there a way to compare the batting prowess of the tail enders in the current times compared to those of yesteryear? With the rise of t20 cricket and more tail enders working on their batting, I wonder if knocking over the tail has become harder, or at least more expensive in terms of average runs.

@JarrodKimberYT
@JarrodKimberYT 3 жыл бұрын
@@dhirajkrr That is the case for every single bowler on this list. It's an obvious point, right. So then we look at the splits that they provided to prove Starc wasn't good against the top, which is wrong. Now you are talking about usage percentage. But what will that tell us, if Josh Hazelwood, who is not good against the tail, still improves his record when he bowls to them. If Starc does it more, it's because he's fit and good at it. My guess is only Stokes, an all rounder, is actually used as tail order guy. Everyone else has to bowl to everyone else, and is used when they are best suited, as much as the game allows.

I think people's issue with Starc is that its hard to put him into a convenient category. He's not a consistent line and length bowler like Mcgrath/Hazlewood/Cummins who toil hard and wear the batsman down. And he doesn't have the fiery passion that Lillee/Lee/Johnson had. He bowls short a lot but most of these just go sailing over the batsmans head without any real aggression to it. That's what pisses Warne off. He's confused at how Starc is able to find success despite not sticking one of the formulas that has worked with past players. Most of his success is attributed to his height and pace, whereas great bowlers of the past had many other attributes and/or personality. That combined with a perceived weak era for batting, particularly over the past 5 years. I'm not sure of the numbers on this, but it feels like batting has gotten worse in recent times despite all the reprieves batsmen get like shorter boundaries and bigger bats. I feel that all of this stuff combined pisses of Warnie.
@JarrodKimberYT
@JarrodKimberYT 3 жыл бұрын
No, what pisses Warne off is that Starc said Warne's time was done when Warne was hinting at a comeback and the Test team didn't want him. He's not a line and length bowler, and he still averages 26 with 250 wickets. I think it's great he doesn't bowl like the others, he gives teams a completely different challenge. Batsmen weremaking huge runs until the end of 2017in Tests, and at that time Starc was average 27 with 150+ wickets.

I usually cringed when I used to listen to the Indian commentary (English ones although I hear the Hindi commentary has become very insightful now a days) however, the last couple of Australia tours, have made me run to my Indian commentators. Warne, O'Keefe and company made the fox coverage terrible to watch on Willow (US subscriber). Hussey was great and an exception to this terrible team. Do people in Australia feel the same? I guess they have the option to go to Channel 7. Was that better than Fox? With Benaud and Taylor and Chappell and Lawry gone, Sky Sports UK with Atherton and Hussain are the commentary gold standard. Also, not sure why Warne has it in for Starc. He did bowl badly in a couple of games but there were a fair few missed opportunities especially some easy catches dropped. Lyon was more of a disappointment than Starc this series.
