Australia has an allrounder problem. They've always had it, too. But could Cameron Green be the answer to all of that? Could Cameron Green fill a 70-year vacancy?

Watson problem was no good against the older bowl, he wanted the ball coming on to the bat, his average drops 15 batting 5 or below in the batting order, so he had to open, and once opening he's going to be judged as a batsmen.
@madglover

My opinion, is that to be successful as a bowler in Australia you need to bowl fast or be a properly good spinner. Neither of which tend to also come with top 6 batting ability. Either due to the toll on the body, or in the spinners case due to the amount of time it takes to put into the cause. Most of the all-rounder seamers are known for their ability to swing the ball but bowl in the mid to low 80s most of the time You've also had an abundance of such brilliant bowlers that you haven't needed a 5th bowler to take 20 wickets
@JarrodKimberYT
@JarrodKimberYT 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure I agree with that, Australia has had plenty of great seam and swing bowlers over the years. Fleming, Reiffel, McGrath, Hughes, Clark, etc. Miller, Imran and Stokes are fast and all rounders. The abundance of great bowlers is all in one ten year span.The attack wasn't always great from 64-95, nor 07--17. I would say if there is any place where a fifth bowler is important, it is either Australia or India. And even Watson was preferred over Clarke when there were great bowlers around.

Jarrod I love your insights and the different angle from which you look at them. I have a bit of a weird request it's that you make a video about how remarkable Gary sobers was I mean people look at his records and they think that Kallis comes even close to him, will he does but people don't realise that sobers bowled a lot more than Kallis and he probably just started to slide down during the is that wouldn't have happened he would have averaged 60 with the bat and 30 with the ball but to be fair that happens to a lot of players. Or you can atleast write an article about him please I would love to read that.

Keith Miller was probably the fourth greatest test all rounder after Sobers, Kallis and Imran IMO (many like Chappelli consider him the 2nd greatest after Sobers). Richie Benaud was another great all rounder, a great Australian captain, an absolutely great guy and probably the voice of Cricket for last 40 years. Anyway, I think Cameron Green is a remarkable young talent; he looks better than a 21 year old Kallis in 1996-97 with both bat and ball. How his development pans out in the next 4-7 years is something the entire cricketing world will have their eye on.

Cam Green would do well with the bat on batting wickets, and do well with the ball on seaming wickets. Don't think he is exceptional enough 'yet' to do it the other way around. Would be interesting to see how he fares on doctored spinning wickets - where neither his batting nor his bowling skills are being aided by the conditions.

2:55 I don't like using average differential to rank all rounder's because it favours batting all rounders. Statistically, a bowling all rounder who is statistically equivalent to Kallis would average 22.3 with the ball and 38 with the bat. Even though there statistically equivalent Kallis has a bigger differential.

Imagine england comparing Flintoff to Kallis, he would have nothing but they belived in their own Flintoff which is great. Same for australia don't look for ben Stokes just be greatful at least you have option between Green and Marsh unlike India who is only having Pandya who is less reliable in tests.

A fast bowling test all rounder is pretty much going to be an endangered species. Ben Stokes is probably the last of them. With the schedule being the way it is it is going to be well nigh impossible to sustain a dual workload and perform at the top level. Also the temptation of attuning your game to the demands of t20 is just too great considering the insane amount of money franchises pay for all rounders. Sam Curran seems to be going down that road. The best you are going to get are the Woakes, Holders and Jamiesons. But somebody who can make it both as an bowler and batsman, will be a rarity.

Now that you've seen Green quite a bit in this series, what did you make of him Jarrod? I feel he is more than a handy batsman and a decent bowler. However, it did not help when Smith made him up as the bowler to win Australia the Gabba test on the 5th day only to be under-bowled.

I wrote about how clever he was to work on the thing that will hold him back to start with with the bat. wickets.substack.com/p/green-and-the-change With the ball I worry he just doesn't hit a length enough. He seems fairly accurate, so maybe it's a young thing. But I think if he finds a length that works for him and just hits it ball after ball there should be no reason why he can't at leat approach a 35 ave 15 overs a day bowler, which would be incredible if he can average 40+
@shahp88

@@JarrodKimberYT He did induce a couple of edges off of Pujara's bat but they did not carry. As you also mention, still early days with the ball. I was surprised he was under-bowled since the pace attack looked weary and Lyon was ineffective at the Gabba. I was so impressed with the way he batted in Melbourne with Pat Cummins. He was cautious after Tea on day 3 and started to open up on Day 4. He threatened to take the game away when he hit a square drive off of Bumrah on his knees but luckily for India, he miscued one. Why did the Aussies not rotate their pace attack? They did so in the Ashes in England. Also, why did they play a half-fit Warner? Don't they have any other decent opening/middle order options? I think so. He actually trained himself to bat like Flintoff around the 09 ashes, but then a spot opening came up and he took that. I wrote a piece once that the then selectors read, which talked about how for maximum value to the team batting at six would open him up to bat with more freedom, and be able to bowl more overs. @@mrkipling2201 That what makes it harder being an Australian fan: seeing genuinely great England allrounders produced, and winning tests for them over the past 40 years, where we've had such a long drought in that aspect. No coincidence that when England didn't have a great allrounder (1990's) they had a miserable time in test cricket. It's a lot easier for England to produce these kind of guys, what with the green wickets, cool conditions, duke ball, basically no travel, numerous games etc. And England has a philosophy where they don't mind their genuine all rounder batting as low as #7 or #8, whereas Australian philosophy is that a genuine allrounder HAS to be a top six batsman, as we feel we can't carry an allrounder who bats that low in the order, and our philosophy is we insist our tailenders (fulltime bowlers obviously) work harder on their batting (which usually works out well for us as we don't produce many genuine "bunnies"; Stuart MacGill being the last one around 15 years ago!).

Aussie wickets are more suited to fast bowlers and they're more likely to produce a fast bowling allrounder than a spinner
@mikespearwood3914
@mikespearwood3914 2 жыл бұрын
To become a genuine frontline spinner in Australia means you have to dedicate the majority of your time to it, as it's so hard to master (look at Warne & MacGill for example). Therefore far more likely to produce pace allrounders than spin allrounders in Australia. Richie Benaud was effectively a once in a 150 year player. Marnus Labuschagne just won't dedicate the time to bowling (away from his passion for batting) to become a genuine spin allrounder.

@mikespearwood3914

Just too hard to maintain both at high levels in Australia. Steve Waugh had back problems etc, same with Shane Watson. James Faulkner peaked quickly, and disappeared quickly (injuries & easy T20 money). Mitch Marsh was overhyped, and given opportunities he didn't deserve based off "potential" (and his family). But Cam Green looks like the real deal. Marnus Labuschagne could improve, but won't devote the time to bowling as he's obsessed with batting, so will only ever be a part-timer.

Completely understand the feeling, in India we have a similar all rounder dream, and to be specific a fast bowling all rounders. Spin bowling all rounders are too meh.. Whenever any fast bowler can bat a bit (as rare as Gold for Indian fast bowlers), we start to dream that the next Kapil Dev is here.

@@JarrodKimberYT Well spin bowling all rounders aren't considered all rounders in India!! Many ppl saw the worth of Jadeja only after that semi final knock against NZ in 2019. Most of the spinners in India bat- Ashwin , Jadeja , Axar , Krunal , Jayant etc. But yeah Jadeja seems to be a proper batsman in recent times
