honestly, i wouldn't mind a movie based on Roland's original concept- as long as it takes place in an alternate reality. although that would probably be too confusing for first time viewers, and i'd DEFINITELY prefer a show if i had to choose one or the other

Can't we have both? A movie to remind us of the past Stargate series and our most loved characters from SG1 and Atlantis, whilst also tying up loose ends in SGU and bringing some form of conclusion to that storyline. A new TV series is always going to be problemsome whether it's set as a prequel, sequel or something altogether new. Whatever it is, it'll need familiar faces of the past to help boost the ratings and I sure hope it has that much loved feel and chemistry that was in SG1, Atlantis (and yes, even SGU, which I felt wasn't given the opportunity to blossom). It's been too long. Power up the gate!

With 17 years of TV shows on Stargate (SG1. Atlantis, SGU), it is much better for it be an evolution of the TV shows and not the original movie. As we all know that is where the fan base are to make a new series successful. The series were a perfect blend of action, humor, drama and solid storytelling.

Tv is a better medium for entertainment because you generally have more time to flesh out the characters. MGM obviously had management issues due to how long the studio has barely been treading water. An Amazon acquisition is only good for the content they own because if there is a fan base, a demand, and cash to be made Amazon will do it. MGM had no way to do it, they didn’t have the capital.

@@VonBrachsenbruegge my personal hope is that it’s set in the existing timeline, and if it’s only one show be something like stargate command, and is inclusive of all the shows and associated lore. And I have high hopes we get at a minimum most of the characters we know in a reoccurring capacity if not a few as regular or semi regular. It appears at this point both pilots under development are indeed both stargate Alums, Brad Cooper and Joe Mollotzi, and Amazon is leaving development and production at MGM so odds are good either show (or hopefully both) are very good

I'm 75 have been watching sci-fi since TV was invented.. SG1 was by far my favorite because the concept was plausible. However, to bring it back and be successful they are going to have to create another Carter- O'Neill team with the same sexual tension and that's going to be a challenge.

I kind of feel for Emmerich in a way, but I'm glad he didn't get the opportunity to continue his vision for the Stargate property; he's forgetting one of the most important things about being a professional in a creative field; learning to let go of your darlings. Whether he likes it or not, Stargate has grown beyond him his original vision for the franchise, and although I can sympathise, it would have been a mistake to throw out years of hard work for what would've likely been a sequel too far removed to please old fans, and without enough traction to gain new ones.

Thanks to what Amazon seems to be doing to Tolkiens The Ring-series, I am even more hesitant towards Amazon. It seems like its a big huge chanse that the show will go the same way as Star Wars, Star Trek and other shows. Sure The Expanse works, just because it its a show kinda is working. Definitely a series. Stargate has become an eclectic blend of tropes and sarcastic humor and occasional legitimate character growth and a Star-Trek-esque string of unique technologies and technological assumptions (IE Stargates, ZPMs, pyramid-ships, norse holograms, etc.). It would be nearly impossible to capture these things adequately in a movie to satisfy pent up fan expectations and nostalgia, even with an entire say 5 season series it would be pretty tough but entirely doable. With a series you also get the option of various forms of reimaginings, such as with Battlestar Galactica classic vs new BSG or to make it a sort of spinoff series happening concurrently with the original (for example focused on the SG1 duplicates that they ran into a couple times or a squad of Jaffa freedom fighters doing covert ops for the Tok'ra against Goauld worlds or heck a branch of peaceful human-form replicators fleeing the war by overloading a Stargate to jump to a random part of Pegasus and having to survive until they can rebuild and secure whatever resources they use (solar energy? carbon chains? I don't remember exactly how the Replicators work anymore lol)). There are definitely interesting potentials here I just really hope they don't go the full reboot route and try and remake Stargate with "improved" modern day politics ("now ALL Jaffa are black and all Goauld white, to represent the horrors of white supremacy" blech).

What I love about Stargate, mostly SG1, is that it takes what was our current day military (at the time) and incrementally worked towards making us a space faring race by utilizing alien technology. No other show is grounded in that way. It depicts our military quite well, especially SGU. It gets into the burden of command and shows how hard it is to be a leader. I love everything Stargate, quite frankly.

I will be forever grateful to Emmerich for the original Stargate movie as it laid the foundation for everything which came after it. But lets be honest, his better days are behind him. The only new Stargate which stands a chance of succeeding is a continuation of the TV shows. That's where the money and the fans are to be be found.

As has been mentioned there is 17 seasons and 2 direct to dvd movies that adapted and continued the original movie. That is a strong portfolio. And it appears even today Stargate has a strong following. At this point the franchise and its rich history belong to Wright as he’s got more development in the story. Had Emrich done his sequels a few years after the first movie it’s debatable if stargate would be as relevant as it is today. And while the series had some issues it all tied together very well, heck I just finished a rewatch of all 10 seasons of sg1 last night. And there are enough threads left from the 3 shows to do a new series in the existing cannon, and apparently most of the actors are supportive if not on board. How to integrate the former cast and their charaters is the question but if they go with Wrights vision I’m comfortable with it though rumors are that there are currently 2 pilots in storyboard currently, one is Wrights the other is unknown. Also it’s been confirmed that Amazon contracted a deal specifically for stargate on Amazon in case the deal drags on too long or doesn’t go thru so that development would be ready if and when the accusation goes thru they are ahead of the game. So it appears stargate is one of the major driving forces behind the acquisition. And it’s a smart move, built in audience, strong back catalogue, endless story potential. So yeah I’m team series. And I hope it’s wrights vision we get.

Yeah, Emmerich's work has a history of being hit-or-miss, with Stargate being one of his rare hits, but as his Independence Day sequel shows, he's also more than capable of ruining his own hits.

Another key thing to consider is Amazon have tried to be international distributor for Star Trek (over Netflix who has Discovery). Paramount are clearly collecting in all Star Trek IP to launch Paramount+ internationally so Amazon will be losing out when that happens

Apparently stargate was one of the key properties behind the merger. Amazon even drew up a deal to develop and produce a stargate series so development would be ready to go as soon as the deal is done. So it looks like there will indeed be a stargate series on Amazon, the question is who’s vision it will be as there are 2 pilots being developed and are currently in story board one is wrights and the other is from someone else

I want to see the series SGU finished. Like they wake up where? I absolutely hate a series that stops in the middle. As far as a new SG series, I'm game until I'm not. I hope they make it a good one. But if they take Egyptology out of the equation they are screwing up. I have the book of the dead, and the entire SG series is based on this book. Moving to a different base for the show is no longer Stargate.

There is so much story potential left with stargate. While I’m sure they will call on the series roots that story arc was pretty much finished with the direct to dvd movie stargate continuum and the capture of B’al and the Ori arc mostly finished with the movie stargate the arc of truth. Now Atlantis and universe opened a lot of doors for exploration. And truth be told I was pretty miffed that both shows were canceled. Universe really found its stride in its second season and Atlantis just had a lot of potential especially since they were in the city of the ancients. I think the smart thing to do is to answer the cliffhanger questions left by both universe and Atlantis and to incorporate all 3 shows into something new. In a perfect world I’d like to see a new show plus restarting both universe and Atlantis but too much time has passed and all of the sets have been destroyed. But a well written all encompassing show would be a good start and hopefully at least another show could spin out of it

i think the best course of action is to have many callbacks in the first few episodes of an entirely new show to 'tie-up' SGA and SGU. as much as i would like an SGA season 6/7, it would be out of place as its been so long. SGU is more possible- but still, entirely new show means less prior knowledge required, meaning more new fans.

I think what would work best is to reboot the original series in one of the alternate timelines we saw on the TV show but have episodes where we have crossovers with the original timeline like they did for the CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths or the Star Trek reboot where Spock Prime went back in time or the 2009 Doctor Who series. The benefit of doing that would first of all make it easier for new fans to be introduced to the whole concept without binge watching 17 years of old episodes while still allowing old fans to find out what happened in unresolved story arks like the notorious Stargate Universe finale. It would also allow us to share the feeling of going through the stargate for the first time and discovering an entirely new unknown world like we did in the 90's thirty years ago similar to our own but with significant differences. A problem the original series ran into towards the end is that every time one big bad was defeated a newer even more powerful one had to be created for suspense by developing ever more advanced technological capabilities. Given the premise of this being a top secret project of the US military it becomes increasingly more difficult to believe that this new technology wouldn't significantly alter world history as we know it or that an open democracy like the USA could keep all this secret. like we were Russia or China.. This would also solve the problem of aging actors well past military retirement age having to play GI Joe action heroes and now very high salary actors like Jason Mamoa no longer being affordable to the shows budget as series regulars. I would love to see the original cast members from all three series make guest appearances either as their original characters or as alternate timeline versions of themselves including some who died in the original timeline which a reboot could bring back. For example it would really be cool if Jack's son never accidentally shot himself like in the original timeline and wound up leading a new SG-1.

If a Stargate series happens, they need to have a series that has more then 6 to 11 episodes as a full season. I know the days of having a season with 28 to 33 episodes are gone but sometimes shorter isn't always better.

I agree that the 20-22 episode treatment the other 3 shows enjoyed allowed the writers to flesh out the characters and backstory. Yes there were “filler” episodes however the character development and world building went a long ways to the shows popularity. 8 episodes is a slap in the face honestly but 8-10 seems to be the new streaming formula since the streamer is footing the entire bill, no shared costs with a network or cable channel. But there is a better chance the show won’t get arbitrarily canceled either, only viewer metrics will dictate these new shows survival.

What Amazon did was buy the MGM studios for 8.45 Billion ( or so ) Las Angeles Times said on March 17. Which are several films franchises like James Bond are linked to the Studio and the Star Gate franchise is a part of the studio overall acquisition. As you all know that means that Star Gate anything may be about over a year before we get any news as to a Storyline and then filming. So keep an eye out.

When the movie first came out in cinemas, at the end of it, I said to my mate that this deserves to be turned into a tv series and lo and behold, a couple of years later, there it was in all it's glory. SG1 is my favorite series. How difficult is it to make ones in a while some mini series about Stargate SG1. The stories are there. It is all about the stories. Just cool it with the expensive special effects and get new beginning actors... but pay the director the right salary... 😅

It's an awkward question. SG-1 was a great blend of action, adventure and humour without being cheesy. Atlantis was a tad more serious whilst SGU was a lost opportunity. If they do bring it back, it can't be a reboot and rehash of the same stories. It needs to retain a degree of familiarity whilst offer something new not only to the fans but potentially new ones as well.

From what I remember reading about the planned movies was they would have taken no account of what happened in the TV shows which would have alienated existing fans. He should have adapted his vision to perhaps use different characters to continue his vision much like Star Gate Universe did to take a branch in another direction. Stargate Atlantis wasn't using the Egyptian mythological characters.

Given that the sale of MGM to Amazon was made official on Saint Patrick's Day of this year, I would be surprised if we don't get an announcement by the end of this year. In fact, it would not surprise me if they announce a straight to series order on July 27th as that will be the 25th anniversary of the premier of Stargate SG1.

I could see the Ori, remorseful of the wrong they did offer to help the humans of the Pegasus galaxy. There was an Anubis-like semi-ascended being that was released from Atlantis, we never learned who that was.

I liked all of the series, my favorites being SGU and then SG1. A continuation of SGU, what happens afterward makes for a lot of possibilities. Ending it as they did left a lot of unanswered questions. When if ever did they make it home? What happened in the interim? And so many more, it would make for a great series. Hoping that a new series would answer these questions and tie all the movies and series together.

I would watch BOTH plot lines. There is no divisiveness here. I think running movie and series together would amplify each other's market. There is so much potential for fun. Hide actors from movie as cameos in TV series and vice versa. Give each franchise a hat tip. You can go dark or cheeky with concept and have a winner.

What they really should be doing is finishing the Star Gate Universe story. Yes it was slow to get into but it picked up to be the best of the Stargate series's.

I have this weird unshakeable premonition that Stargate is going to become the new Sci-Fi juggernaut. (As it always should've been). A strange feeling that this one is going to be a runaway success, like, no more second fiddle to Star Trek. I know its counter-wisdom in the reboot era, but comment will be here to look back on in a few years. Just a really strange intuition.

A new series would be amazing if done right and they for sure got the right guys for the job. Especially with todays technology on cgi and film production it would be absolutely stunning. Plus amazons budget would be much higher than anything sci-fi gave them. This could add many more characters, much larger incursions, and visually epic space battles. Oh, and if somehow some way amazon sees this i dont currently have a prime subscription...but im MORE than prepared to sign up at the moment a trailer drops just for Stargate.

I think they could do something that isn't on earth but includes it and how earth can lead it to be known to the world. Finish sgu and where they ended up in a movie and base the series off if the people they meet and can also make like a Babylon or star wars type of show

Emmerich makes awful movies, and Stargate wasn't much of an exception either. The Stargate SG-1 series, on the other hand, is amazing! But any chance we'll get something of similar quality as SG-1?

@🌻 Danika Smithenhouser 🌻 I would love to, but if I ever got $200-400 million like a lot of these modern movies get for a big budget flick, I would make sure that the plot was air tight. As for Moonfall, I was going by what SEVERAL news articles and professionals stated, saying the movie was a finacial and critical flop. Just yesterday, I saw a video from Looper who rated it one of the worst movie of the year. So don't get all hyper to me about a film you may have liked but it's clear no one else did.

Hi Alex, once Brad's deal with the Companion App is done, we are going to try and get him to come on our show. Some really good news is that we know Brad wants to bring people back. He has specifically talked to Michael Shanks and Samantha Carter about it. And we agree, must have Dave Hewlett back as McKay. We'll be pushing hard for it and it wouldn't be Stargate with some of those old faces as main characters on a new show :) Really good comment!

It's not so much a movie or a series, you introduce a few teams in the movie and follow one in the series. Love the idea of exploring different mythologies. Imagine a viking or Greek story.

Speaking of the original Stargate crew, I'd absolutely love to see Amanda Tapping in a new Sanctuary series! And since she doesn't age she could still have children! She could have new grown up children who help her run things by now! Still sad about Ashley's very sticky ending. However, it would be great to see some old characters like Tesla and Druid again! Would love to see the new Sanctuary Magnus made thriving nowadays! It could really be a good show if done correctly!

Don't get me wrong I'm extremely excited about 'any' additions to Stargate, but Amazon and streaming in general we'll be lucky to see three, maybe four seasons. Jeff Bezos personally really liked The Expanse but after an added three seasons it was still cancelled.

Why not launch a new series WITH a movie? The cast that's going to be in the new show, star in the movie, so we don't have recasting for the series. Jump start it with a movie, then launch the TV show from that. Which could also include the original ideas for what was going to be the follow up movies to the original movie.
