From The Episode "The Serpent's Lair"
Description From IMDB - As the Goa'uld attack fleet approach Earth, all four members of the SG-1 team are taken prisoner. They get help from an unexpected source when Bre'tac, Teal'c's mentor, reveals that he is on board. Apophis has delayed the attack until his son Klorel is revived, giving them some time to prepare. SG-1 has used all of the C4 on one of the two ships but must find a way to dispose of the second. Back at Stargate Command, Lt. Col. Bert Samuels arrives as a Pentagon liaison officer but also reveals a new weapon they have developed. General Hammond is dubious. They begin to transport humans to transport humans to an Alpha site in order to ensure the continuation of mankind.

Of course if that idiot Kinsey hadn't got the shut-down order put in I'm pretty sure they'd have done a lot better. I mean, they did that with just 4 guys, can you imagine how much chaos they could have caused with at least three fully-equipped SG teams in play?

But it used to take weeks to prepare a shuttle for launch so it is rather illogical to see a shuttle sent just to retrieve them, unless the shuttle was already on a mission that very day... In that case it is frightening to think they didn't order the shuttle back to Earth when Goa'uld motherships came in.

What would be the point? In an all-out Goa'uld invasion, Endeavor's crew would likely be just as dead if they landed as they would if NASA kept them in orbit. By the time they got ready for re-entry and landed, the ships would be ready to being hitting key targets. Kennedy and Edwards would likely be steaming craters fairly soon.

@@quoniam426 They had a warning the Goa'uld were coming, and the only chance Earth had, would have been to send a shuttle with a couple of nukes to meet them in a suicide mission. So when the mother-ships exploded, the only mission that remained for the shuttle would have been to retrieve the team. Now, how would that be possible, is another question.

Daniel was really awesome because even under that huge amount of pressure (you know, the ressurrection but dying again if hes not fast enough thing) he remembered to not dial Earth because since the ship was in Earth's orbit he would have got a "busy signal". (as explained in a later episode)

Earlier, actually. "Solitudes" (the one where Sam and Jack are stuck in Antarctica) is the 18th episode of the first season, while this is the first episode of the second season. So, Daniel would already know that he wouldn't be able to dial Earth, as he was the one who realised what was happening with the beta gate in the first place.

Everyone's talking about how they got into the shuttle, which could maybe be reasonably explained by folding the glider wings and fitting in the shuttle docking bay, but I want to know something else. Later on Daniel assumes that Apophis must have survived by going through the Stargate AFTER he did but obviously it's not possible to disengage, dial, and walk through a gate in less than 4 seconds before the C4 went off. I'm just wondering if Apophis used a Tel'tak and the SGC/Daniel just had no idea they existed yet or if he somehow got to the gate BEFORE Daniel and the episode's cut just make it look weird.

A human can withstand exposure to space outside of the sun's scorching light for a minutes with only minor ill effects. It's not pleasant, but they could have got the gliders in close, and transferred them into the shuttle's cargo bay airlock. Alternatively they may have repaired the gliders in orbit and had them land. -It's really unlikely that they could load them in, the shuttle can't land carrying much cargo, even if they cut the wings off to fit them in the bay it would have been a messy landing.- *Edit,* gliders apparently weigh far, _far_ less than expected, if they could fit them into the cargo bay, the shuttle has the payload.

Similar concept to Submarine rescue vehicles. I f a Submarine becomes incapacitated, and cannot surface, then a rescue vessel would have to form a positive seal, allowing the emergency crew to force the hatch open and evacuate the crew. In this case, they jam up a seal around the glider's canopy, pressurize it, then have SG-1 crawl through the air lock.

@matth1589
@matth1589 4 жыл бұрын
How did they get into the shuttles? What we aren't shown is that a glider's crew compartment can be ejected. These are much smaller and can be taken into shuttle bay, where the pilots can be extracted safely. The "survival cell" of the glider is designed to be compact so that it can fit through ring devices, and so that they can be recovered by smaller vessels. The shuttle bay can fit them. In order to increase the time for the operation to take place, attachable boosters were brought out to help maintain the gliders' orbits. Actually depicting that would have interrupted the story and the cost of the FX would have been prohibitive; so, "Yay, shuttle!" Cut to heroes returning to base.

Well, in Touchstone, one of the gliders studied in Area 51 is in the "fold" position, even though there's no proper reason why it should be, so maybe to fit inside the shuttle, they re-folded the glider (though even so, the shuttle would have to be slightly bigger than in real life for both gliders to fit). Or maybe, like the ceremonial Jaffa armor, the glider wings can retract to become smaller?
@Ananamitron
@Ananamitron 3 жыл бұрын
I would assume the pods detach or "eject" and those could fit in the shuttle cargo hold. But before they did that, I would also assume the shuttle pushed the death gliders into a higher orbit for recovery by area 51 later in the show.

@@stevepettersen3283 Stargate doesn't transfer explosions, though it can be overloaded and forced to jump to another gate by them, I believe. Stargates have some kind of mechanism to check for "intent", of sorts, to travel through the gate. If you dial a planet with no atmosphere, your atmosphere pushes against the event horizon, but it doesn't get transferred because it has no "intent", to prevent your atmosphere from being sent through, uselessly. I am not sure how it works/what counts as "intent" to the gate: inanimate objects can still be sent despite not having _real_ intent. It seems reasonable that explosions would not be sent through, much like wind and simple pressure aren't sent through.

They never explain how they got out of the gliders without spacesuits and into the shuttle ... Does it have beaming technology ?

they landed the glider either on or in the shuttle. they didnt needed to get out of the gliders, they needed to get on Earth. the shuttle did the job of getting them on Earth where they could get out even if it could have required some additionnal work due to forseeable problems. (jammed opening mecanism for example.) the glider could fold their wings so they could fit in the shuttle's payload and, if they couldnt, they could have used the shuttle to shield them from the brunt of atmospheric entry by flying the gliders so close to the shuttle that they are actually slipstreaming the shuttle.

What good is a space shuttle ? They don't have space suits ..there is no room in the cabin for passengers which leaves the cargo bay which isn't pressurized ..do they have beaming tech on the space shuttle ?

they dont need to get out of the gliders. they either fit the glider in the shuttle's payload, or land the glider on top of the shuttle. (using the shuttle to shield the gliders from the brunt of the air friction generated during the atmospheric entry. Something akin to slipstream.)

@@karhedin the glider is as big as a Shuttle it can not fit into the cargo bay...

@@xadam2dudex those gliders can fold their wings. and with the image of the cockpit of a shuttle (upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/65/Configuration_lancement_fligh_deck.jpg ) we can assume the size of the glider and the size of the shuttle payloads. they can fit in there if they fold their wings. NB: in my previous post i also assumed the folding system being damaged. that's why i offered a plan to land without folding the wings.
