Starpoint Gemini Warlords by LGM Games is launching out of early access and it's set itself up as a surprisingly ambitious space game. Starting with a single ship you can build out to larger vessels, control multiple fleets, build bases and all those other things which players want to do when they master the base game.

Reminds me of Freelancer, I did enjoy that game. Flying around, exploring gas clouds and debris fields, finding wrecked ships and loot. I hope this game has those things (no I do not give a crap that it is not realistic).

As a relatively experienced SG2 player who doesn't have Warlords yet, I can confirm all those things WERE great fun in the previous game in the series. I'm pretty sure they're still here for Warlords, too.

Scott, bud, spend some time and learn the camera controls. You can auto lock targets and select "next" target and such. Makes it MUCH easier and increases the enjoyment of battles. Love the vids bud! Keep them up.

But a target lock is lame for other reasons... it reeks of easy mode console games that you can play with your eyes shut. Kid's stuff. Boring. I just wish there was a game with the combat of Elite, and the personality/charm/soul of freelancer. Surely such a thing could be made without the hundreds of millions of dollars apparently required for Star Citizen.

I played the crap out of Freelancer growing up and it's by far the best space game I ever played and this a true successor to it. They took almost everything from Freelancer including the controls and added more stuff to it like commanding a fleet, base building , teleporting crew, tractor beams, control large ships with hangars , diverting energy to shield , weapons or engines, ramming ability, shotgun, cloaking and other things. I'm seriously considering replacing Freelancer with this game, good job to the team that made this amazing game.

It seems like a lot of people in the comments are getting a bad first impression based on Scott's difficulty controlling the ship but I just want to point out that it's a hell of a lot easier than he is making it look once you read the key map. For starters you toggle auto fire with F, you can mark target for your auto fire and your fleet with / on the numpad, if you don't want to use auto fire you can lock your camera on your target with k so it is easier to track as you fly. Also numpad 5 is grapple, it uses a tractor beam on your target making it much easier to hit as well as launch a boarding party. Aside from that there is power distribution, shifting power to weapons keeps your battery from going empty as you are firing at the cost of shield regeneration and so on. Lastly the class abilities and equipment slots he wasn't using are very powerful and can be used on any type of ship. In all I would say the game's controls are very easy to get used to. Advice for starters though, invest in heavier ships for your escort fleet like destroyers, cruisers and battleships. Gunships, corvettes, and frigates die so quickly they are a waste of precious salvage!

Thanks for the insight. 1 question though, regarding your last statement about escort ship size. I read a few reviews and discussions on the Steam page that mention that the world AI scales with your own level, meaning if you level up to a big ship/tech, the enemy magically also gets better ships, in an approach to keep things challenging. While I'm no fan of magical AI upgraded enemies, I may not notice it if it's done right, e.g. I open up new skills at higher levels that help me out despite the AI being at the same 'tech level'? Scaling is kind of annoying and usually a let down in many games I've played, for example I'll hit a wall due to difficult, and think that grinding and leveling up first might help..only to realize when I return, everything scaled up with me so I'm back to square 1...almost. Was there any time in the game it felt cheesey like this or was it not as bad as some reviews say it is?

You've got to use alternate camera modes to fight the way you want. Makes it much easier.

Are you sure the problem with your X52 wasn't one of the slider controls? I know I would occasionally have problems with games that would interpret the throttle control on my ancient Saitek Cyborg as a camera control, so the camera would constantly spin around the player character until I set the throttle to 50%.

Scott mentioned in another comment thread that he was doing poorly because he's used to other games and the control scheme is unfamiliar. As a veteran of SG2, I did need some time to get used to the controls, but it's a LOT smoother when you know what you're doing. Where Freelancer is primarily about flying single-seat fighter ships, the Starpoint Gemini games are basically Freelancer in a capital ship. Even when you're in a Gunship at the beginning of the game, you have a large enough crew on your ship to have spare soldiers for boarding actions. The nature of commanding larger vessels requires more options in how you control the perspective, so just cloning what Freelancer had wouldn't be enough.

I would point out that you can hear your own guns firing, but you won't hear enemy ships firing on you unless you're hit.

Why is the orientation of your camera fixed to the orientation of your ship? God that's disorienting, is there an option to turn that off?

I worded that poorly, what I mean is when you pitch/turn the camera also pitches/turns, which means you have to fight against any course corrections you make to aim at stuff. If that's mode dependent and I just missed the bit where you could look around without the turning of your ship affecting where you were pointing your cursor then my bad, but if that's how it is all the time that seems really annoying to me.

Scott was playing with the camera in "turret mode" which allows free rotation, BUT the camera is linked to the ship's orientation. There are several modes you can cycle through which behave differently, including a free camera you can rotate without being affected by what the ship is doing. There's also fixed camera that's locked to the ship's forward facing and lets you manually aim within that arc only - it's terrible if you're in a bigger ship, but some Gunships and Corvettes handle pretty well that way.

Why if you can travel the speed of light would you should people with lazer cannons from 50 ft away. It makes no sense, creators have to realize this stuff isn't realistic (I know it's sci-fi) but still some realism, we are ready for it with the new space races and all!

The camera is painful if you're not used to it. That's the reason I stopped playing SPG2

If you have trouble you can focus on managing a fleet of NPC's to do the shooting for you - that helps a great deal.

Part of the problem is he was in turret view, which is basically freelook, so he could only turn with the keyboard, and as he said his mental map wasn't quite meshing (V toggles turret view by default BTW). I will say the turret setup (at least up to destroyer) doesn't make much sense for spaceships, the turrets are almost all on top of the ship, so unless the enemy is forward and above you many of your guns can't shoot, and the chase camera placement is a little wonky for that setup.. (Fire at Will, toggled with F, lets the AI take over shooting so you can focus on piloting, which helps some, but not a ton). Also B is the default key for the Sublight drive.

Yes! This is exactly what I wanted Scott to talk about! Compare it to X3 and Rebirth. This game is obviously a lot more arcadish, but it sounds like there are a lot of elements from the X series. Really want to hear Scott compare them.

It's different. X series have, for example, much deeper economy than us, that's the fact. But we have more battles, and I'm talking 20 vs 20 capital ships, especially in later stages of the game when you already have a small empire. Fleet management is also a bit different here. Don't get me wrong, we all love X series (Rebirth is another story) and play those games, we're just saying it's different. :)

Great to hear a developer be honest and not be afraid to compare their product with others! (and great to have a dev even answer youtube comments =P). Shows that they are confident in their product and gives credibility. I just bought the game on steam =D (Fallout 4 can wait ^_^). Rebirth is indeed another story for another galaxy (where FPS doesn't drop for no reason and getting to a merchant on a station doesn't take a day and an age).

I recommend looking for other videos - Scott's camera control (not the controls themselves) is pretty bad - he actually comments that it was his fault in another comment thread. It takes some getting used to, but there's several options for the camera which work better or worse for different ship types. The option Scott is using here is probably the most disorienting you can possibly make the game.

I didnt really like SG2. It was not the repetition, but rather the universe felt dull, its story and characters, all of them boring and uninteresting, and while the map looks like its full of stuff to explore and do, you soon realise they are nothing more than decorative fluff and the ships are not very inspired. When they announced warlords and how much more it took advantage of the previously useless map, I regreted buying SG2. Rebel galaxy is way better.

So I don't know how one would do controlling the ship while in turret view, but this is not it. It's basically the same system they had in Discovery Freelancer and that was pure trash.

I appriciate that but if it's the same system as Gemini 2 (Played my copy after watching this video) theres still some lacking in the camera control department. Mainly: There needs to be a "lock to target" button. Constantly fighting the camera while fighting in a slow ship is a bit of a pain. A camera mode where it directly follows the targeting reticule would be great. The weird drag-away system is confusing. Looking too far up or down prevents you from going farther. That needs to be a seemless loop. If those are fixed in warlords (At least the snag when you look too far down/up) then that's great.

Battles in Warlords are much bigger than in SPG2. We actually implemented Lock to Target in Xbox One version of SPG2 and people complained about it. Why? Because it's not a dogfighting game, and you will get attacked from all sides, by multiple ships, you will need to switch targets as they come and go out of range, it would be impossible to just focus on ships one by one until they're destroyed. Maybe we are wrong, but that would be a very hard way to play.

Ah ok. While I don't agree with the complaints I appriciate the explanation. Maybe I'm the weird one here. I should probably say that the camera issues are the only problems i've been having with SPG2. It's a good game and I'll probably be picking up Warlords when I have the cash.
