Like most late model Sportster you remove the ground cable from the mounting point first, then slide the battery out with the ground cable attached. When installing a new battery, slide the battery in place with ground cable attached, put some electrical tape on the opposite end and feed the end of the ground cable down to the location it grounds to, but don't bolt it on. Slide in battery, attach the positive. Now remove tape from the negative end and bolt on the grounding lug/stud/bolt.

Hell yeah, that would work!!! Thank you for that tip!!! 👍🍺

Hey Slick like your channel, i was a H-D wrench (not a technician) for along time, shovel thru evo day's. Ya i'm old. Don't sell yourself short on electrics. Even tho i really new it was the regulator, because i worked on a few of these back in the days (bad location), i would have done it the same way. I have quite a few old bikes. But my favorite is my ULH bobber, same style as yours. I know you like your 6 volt, but a12v Cycle Electric gen w/built in reg will make you happy. Like that Hippie too, although he makes me winch now and than.

First thing first as for someone who runs 6v systems. If they are setup properly they work and function fine. You are wasting your money going to 12v if you have a 6V system. NEXT, You must leave your lights on at all times, "you have to run the generator". that goes for 12V also... With that said, a digital amp meter needs to be put on the positive side at the positive terminal at the battery while running under load with raised RPMS. During this time the 3rd brush needs to be adjusted accordingly. Cut out relays are exactly that, they cut out. They move constantly during your riding and idling time. During this time they either close the circuit and charge the battery or open and let the generator not overcharge the system. You must also flash your battery when you install it to properly polerize it to the field. If you are running a aftermarket Cut out, that is half your problem. If you running a 32E that you bought from some 'Rebuilder" that could be your problem. More than likely the cut out is junk and look for the correct OEM or Dixie 3 post cut out relay. I been selling 2 post for pre 37 "with out idiot light" on ebay for years. If you don't care about an idiot light and rather get to where you are going and have the cut out working I can sell you one of the few I have left that are OEM DELCO originals with the RARE as hens teeth base plate "HD ONLY"... If you go to the OLEY swap meet, the guy behind the big pavilion., father and son team build correct rewound armature original 32E generators. Pricy but well worth it.

Hey Matt, first off thanks for watching and commenting on my video. I appreciate it !! second off. Thank you for all the great advice you left me !!!third I’m never changing that bike over to a 12 V system I would never do that. I’m a purist, it came with 6 V, it’s staying with 6 V. I’ve had that thing set up for the past year and a half now and it’s always charged my bike fine without overcharging. Everything has been cool, until right now obviously something has changed, possibly the cut out relay like you were saying. I’ve installed an electronic cut out relay on a flathead 45 inch that I have in my shop. It seem to work well what do you think about those? I will be at Oley this year as I do every year, so maybe we’ll bump into each other if you’re there !! again thanks for the advice. 👍🍺 SLICK

Jb weld is the wrong material to use for that repair on the cowling. 3M SM/C Fiberglass repair adhesive - 1 , 3M part # 08270. It is a twin tube 2 part epoxy glue that is green. U can buy the gun that mixes it as it squeezes out or push out equal amounts bye hand onto a board and mix with a stick. It can be bought in several different set times. From 5 seconds to 10 minutes. That would be a much better material for fixing that damage.

Harley solid state reg's; bleh ! I feel the pain with the 45' charging system, i've gone to a CE generator and trying a flea bay solid state regulator (12v, originality don't get me twitched) the jurys still out, been fighting dud condenser that i now think was the coil, lights work but no fire in the hole. Here's a good tip, always carry a pocket knife so you can busy y'self doing some whittling while yer waiting to be picked up by the side of the road. I'm enjoying the show.
