My old CB 900F has electrical gremlins. Every time I see a multimeter and a soldering iron near a bike I reach for the bourbon. ✌🏻

It’s inevitable, given time. I can only wonder how modern bikes will fair 20 years from now 👍

Thank you for posting this! can you give us an update two years on - is it still going? No follow-up post about it, so I'm assuming that it's still going strong. My Daytona 955i has just eaten a stator and regulator and my mechanics want many, many dollars - and three months just for the parts to arrive! So it looks like I will be following your lead here and doing a full upgrade of stator and regulator and including bypassing the OEM wiring harness. I had the harness replaced eight years ago when I bought the bike (along with the stator and regulator) so I think that it's probably ok still, but you never know. Better to spend a couple of hours on some new wiring than trust possibly dodgy connectors in the existing harness.

Hi there. As I said in last answer DrJ no longer has the bike. However it continued to work fine in the months prior to sale. It's very common it seems that the Triumph stators of this era fail, sometimes repeatedly, after years of no problem with the OEM. So harness is a common suspect I do not know if this is actually the cause. Regulators are changed, wiring, stator etc... as you've seen in the video. We did disconnect the charging lead manually so it was not connected to the battery when the bike was not in use. There are lots of good people on the relevant Facebook groups who helped us. Well worth checking out. Good Luck! I hope you sort it 👍

@@CodgerBiker sorry, I missed your other reply. Thank you for taking the time to write again. Well that's good to know. I've got some testing to do before I start sorting out parts. I want to be sure that it's not just a bad connector before I spend the money. Anyway, thank you for the video and the reply. I really appreciate it.

No problem. It was DrJ's bike and he loved it. We did get it working ok, more by luck than judgement I think. We eliminated any plugs and simplified, just in case, and it worked on the 2nd replacement stator/reg-rec replacement with minimal wiring. I often wondered if oil supply could be an issue also, but we never resolved that. 👍

Looking at the video at the moment the cover with the stator is placed, it doesn't seem that the magnetic force of attraction between the motor rotor magnets and the stator core is as strong as it should be. With my Tiger 955i, the stator burned out 4 times in a short time. But the first time was changed after 16 years of use. What can happen is that over time the magnets lose their magnetism. Then it is necessary to change the rotor or, if possible, change the rotor magnets. I suggest you check the magnets, just in case. I remember the classes on magnetization that permanent magnet means that they last a long time, but they are not eternal.

Could be a good point. The bypassing of the wiring loom appears to have cured it...for now 👍

In the process of changing my stator (2004 Tiger)... but I'm wondering if the rectifier might ALSO be toast and that's what took out the stator (which may have been what killed your second stator). Did you test the rectifier?
@CodgerBiker3 жыл бұрын
Did you actually watch the video 😂 New stator. New regulator/rectifier (Shindengen). New battery. Loom bypass. All mentioned in the video. Still working fine, it looks like it was a loom issue. Remember also it is oil cooled so keep eye on levels. 👍

@@CodgerBiker was watching a bunch of videos trying to figure out if there was a test for R/R operation (other than just looking for shorts), probably meant to post on a different thread. My R/R legs are all showing high impedance so I guess at the least it shouldn't destroy the stator... but I was hoping for a function test and didn't find one (other than putting it back together and seeing if it works).

Hi David. It's not my bike so I was just vlogging the process. We reolaced the stator and put in a mosfet R/R first. Stator burnt out in 16 hours. 2nd time. New stator. New Shen' R/R. New battery. But we think bypassing the 17 year old wiring loom is what sorted it.
@juststuffinuk9518 Жыл бұрын
Omg this is my life at present. I did all you have, 2 stators, 2 mosfet regrec's directly fused to the battery and a new direct loom isolating it from the bike wiring. All quality makes and still another fried stator. I'm thinking about a series regrec as a last resort.how is it holding up? Thanks

Seems to be a bit of a mixture of dark arts and luck. The final version worked for us in that it did not burn out again. To be safe John disconnected it when not in use. But he no longer has the bike. I can only say it worked for quite a few rides out, prior to that it would just die when it ran out of electricity, and it was still running fine. I hope you sort it. We never really got to the bottom of the issue, hard to tell: loom? Poor quality components? Wear? Random factor? But it is common. Try also the groups on Facebook, they were very useful, especially the UK one 👍

@@CodgerBiker such a shame the 955i is let down by the charging.a great bike otherwise. I'm leaning towards the oil being too hot to cool the stator efficiently. Either that or I'm just gonna lash an old bicycle light generator on the side or the tyre.
@CodgerBiker Жыл бұрын
Must admit I did wonder about the oil cooling myself. Some suggest it happens when bike on side stand as I remember. But the original stator did not do that so it seems unlikely to me. Ha ha, yes a dynamo. Used to wear the side of my tyre out 😂👍

I have just bought a sprint RS and there is an issue with it draining the battery overnight, it now has an isolator on it and working OK ... any ideas as to where to look for power drain? Not even ridden it yet!!
@CodgerBiker Жыл бұрын
Could be a weak battery and the alarm draining it. Or just a weak battery. The 955i had a reputation of wiring loom issues. I’d disconnect any accessory to begin with and add them back one at a time if you don’t have an ammeter to check the current drain. Hard to tell without having the bike. An isolator is a good idea in any event so long as you don’t need the alarm (if it has one). No telling how the wiring has been altered by previous owners. Good luck! 👍
@SimonWatson-nx1kt Жыл бұрын
@@CodgerBiker Thanks for that, I pick the bike up today so will have a play.... don't need an alarm as live in Austria, bike is not insured during the winter when the plates are handed in, and we usually leave stuff on, with the bikes when out and about, very low crime rate luckily.

Hey Friend 👋 Please help 🙏 😢 I have the 2004 model and yesterday at some point during my ride i noticed a deference in the facionality of the motor. It started to sound a bit different, more like it didn't have enough power to run properly and especially when I opened the throttle for a bit the engine made a weird knocking sound 😳 for whatever reason. It used to work just fine before yesterday. No rattlings, no other stuff, it had an issue with the DPS and the battery, I immediately replaced them with new ones last month. The bike has a new battery, new oils 🛢 and it didn't have any other worrying signs when it comes to the engine. Please share if you don't mind. Thanks.

Its a very common problem with the older Triumph (triples). I am just waiting for the same to happen to my Speed Triple. (Shouldn’t have said that doh).

Yes we had a lot of help from Triumph owners who had experienced the same thing. So far, so good. I hope yours stays good too 🤞👍

Hi! I have the same problem on my Tiger 955i .. When you removed the stator cover, did spill anything? Because it has a pipe that goes through there.
@CodgerBiker4 жыл бұрын
We did not see a pipe. But the stator, I think, is oil cooled. Some oil dripped. So it is important to check oil level after refit 👍
@digo1074 жыл бұрын
Codger Biker Thanks for the answer! Did you put the oil that comes out of it right into the engine back?
@CodgerBiker4 жыл бұрын
No. We think it was only a few drops, but it went into the ground!! So we just topped up the engine oil after re-assembly. Check it on level ground with the dip stick screwed right in, top up as needed.👍

What's the resistance meant to be? My stator is 0.4 all winding and no continuity. The rectifier has been done twice now no idea the problem. Battery is ok too works for about 6months then goes again

Honestly can't remember. In the end we bypassed the loom and it continued to work. But bike is long gone I'm afraid. Sorry.
