This song was from "Who I Am" in 1975 featuring his classic "Never Walk Away From Love". It was produced by Van McCoy who was best known for his classic hit "The Hustle".

This is the BEST version, I always loved it but David did not write this as many others have noted. It was written by Jan Crutchfield and first recorded in 1969 by country music artist Jack Green who took it to #1 on the Country Chart.

David Ruffin DID write statue and recorded it in 1958! Proof positive is in the Unsung series on David. In the video the 45 is being played so everyone can see the title, writer and singer. I am getting fed up with those who don't want to give him credit because of his later drug problems. David was great and the Temptations would still be lost without him.

Let me clear this up. This was first recorded in 1958 by Eddie Bush, also known as Little David Bush, also soon to be known as David Ruffin. He was quite young. That would precede any '69 recording and gives credence, although not proof positive, that David wrote the song.

@barriobajaj I am only aware of David Ruffin as the author of this song. He is given the credit as writer on the album. I would like to hear any other versions of this song that exists, including the country version which you made mention of.

If he did not author this song, then why did he record it n 1961 under the name Little David Bush? How could it possibly have been written in 1969, when it was, recorded in 1961, by Little David Bush, aka David Ruffin. I've seen the 45, I heard it. It is also here on YT. It's also part of TV ONE Unsung.

There should have been a rightful and legal lawsuit between Jan Crutchfield and David Ruffin concerning which one legally owns the rights to this song and which one can prove it to the judge presiding over that case, not just the will of either side of this matter.. Ask an attorney.

David orginally wrote and sang the song in the 50s.

Tho, David did a great job with the song and you clearly can tell it meant something to him. He did not write Statue Of A Fool. My Dad, Jan Crutchfield wrote Statue of A Fool. It has nothing to do with his later drug problems etc. He just can't get credit for something he didn't write. Nothing more then that.

It doesn't make any difference who wrote the song nobody can sing it like this man can

Everyone has their OWN REALITY! As it is obvious that u do as well! If it helps u sleep at night, so be it! However, if MY FATHER WAS "JACKED" for his song by yours, then, copyrights and checks that ur Father was smart enough or knowledgeable enough 2 know how or when 2 "rip" somebody off & get the credit, doesn't make them the writer. Either way, good, bad or indifferent, It is not my intent 2 start or be a part of any BEEF, but wanted 2 chime in, in my FATHER defense! Stay Blessed #OffSpring

I think you need to give a lot of credit to Van McCoy who produced, arranged & conducted the album.

The only credit Ruffin should be getting is finding the song for the late, great Van McCoy to arrange and produce. Ruffin taking credit for writing this song is pure plagiarism. I'm not taking from the beautiful job he did singing his interpretation but come on. It's not a crime to sing someone else's song but taking credit for writing it is.

David Ruffin told his live-in girlfriend Genna Sapia he wrote this song & she claims he recorded it on a 78, not a 45 at age 17 under the name of Little David Bush. I think David was selling wolf tickets. Here's why. Genna claims David was no-writer & the fact is there is NOT one song registered with BMI or ASCAP with him being a writer or co-writer of any song under either name. Jan Crutchfield is listed with BMI as the songwriter of NAME IT AFTER ME (the original title) & over 600 other songs.

I can tell you feel very strong about this, but he just didn't write it. There has never been any proof that he did nor did he take any steps to prove it either.
