I am in awe of this steak pie! My mom made this until I left the house at 21. God I miss her and I miss her steak pies! She passed on a few years ago. I was given her recipe box when we cleared the house. You have inspired me to finally get that box out and go through her many delicious meals and re-create them. Thanks!

I am GERMAN born with a dual nationality. My mother-in- law used to cook a lot. She passed me on, how to make all kind of pastries. And she did a good job. I love cooking pastries. I am also addicted, collecting cookery books. There is one I treasure : GOOD HOUSEKEPPINGs COMPENDIUM. I would never ever give this away. By the way I have over 200 cookery books ( GERMAN and BRITISH) . The one GERMAN cookery book, which I wouldn't give away, is my mother's first book from 1946 ! I love all the classical cooking. Thank you for your video . I love watching you.

Thank you for sharing this intimate memory of your Mom and a favorite she made for you and the family. I lost my Mom 20 years ago and for the longest time, NO ONE could beat her cooking. Between her and my Grandmother, it was pure bliss to sit down and eat their cooking, from the everyday simple dinners to Thanksgiving a handful of times over at my Grandmothers ( us kids called her Mamaw ) What a special treasure that recipe book is. And if you ever cross paths with a recipe and a missing ingredient ... DON'T substitute it. You will want to taste it exactly the way you remembered it.

Hi john, as a fellow Sunderland girl, I grew up on this food. My grandad was a baker and every Saturday morning he was up at the crack of dawn baking fresh baked bread and pies for the (many) grandkids in the 90’s. I’m so glad that I have found your channel, even though I still live in Sunderland, watching your channel makes me feel like I’ve come home back to my most cherished time. Keep up the good work, going from the comments on many of your videos, I know that many others feel the same ☺️

Well I promised I would give you the verdict of my family's opinion on this recipe. It was a hit. The pastry was super sturdy and crispy, but still manages to have great flavour. It stays put, and holds up incredibly well. You will have no problem with heavy and/or wet fillings with this pastry. The beef and onion with filling with the hint of pepper was fantastic and the gravy firm not runny, perfect. John Kirkwood this was a 10 out of 10. Thank you.

Just found and subscribed to your channel John. Love cooking, especially pies, and as we lived in the UK a hundred years ago😀 your wonderful recipes are much appreciated. I make individual savoury birthday pies for the residents of our condo building, some people actually buy them from me😀. Anyway I have now some more great ideas thanks to you and will have fun looking at your past videos. Thanks again John! David 🇨🇦

Excited to give this recipe a go. Pastry like my granny in New Zealand used to make and seemingly impossible to find in Australian bakery's. Got my lard and my beef this morning. Ready to roll!

Fantastic! I'm pleased you will give it a try my friend and I hope it turns out well.

And so it did. Although I went a little overboard on the cornflour, so my gravy is a little thick, but still yummy. I used Asahi Dry ale, as it was what I had, and it was utterly delicious. The pastry was all I had hoped it would be. Your instructions were magnificent. Thank you. Steak and Kidney next!

I made this pie yesterday and it was so yummy! My two teenagers have never had a savory pie before, but they loved it! There was one piece left but in the morning, it was gone. This is what happens with hungry teenagers overnight. :o)

Looks absolutely delicious. What I would do is to add a bay leaf and a few cloves and a splash of vinegar while it is stewing. Beef and vinegar go so well together.
