It actually kind of pisses me off, because some people rely on the clearer subtitles, that are easy to read. The subtitles not actually describing the song can be funny, but it's not actually doing what it is supposed to. This is something that abled people just can't fucking seem to understand, that people need these subtitles to be able to.actuallt enjoy, and they may not be able to read the subtitles given in the video

I'm gonna guess the meaning: A chimney sweeper (flu faker) is like a slave and he wants to die so bad - when they nailed his feet to the floor he thought the rust getting into his blood was going to kill him but it didn't do the trick so he decided to 'accidentally' suffocate in the chimney but his master dragged him out so he hangs himself.

I´d interpret it, that through the noninterfernce of the government in business and industry (insurances, social systems etc.), he somehow fell through some "loopholes" and ended up as a flue faker. A Job he absolutly hates, makes him lose his mind/ self and makes him eventually kill himself. I´d blame that too, if I was in that position.

Fun fact: Laissez faire was the name of the policy adopted by the British government for most of it's history. It basically means keeping a hands-off approach to the issues of the public and not interfering, which is why child labour like chimney-sweeping was able to go on for as long as it did, amongst other things.

Hm, this song is a little less obvious than Secrets of Wysteria, but I'll try my best! So, when the events occur in this song, Oliver is a chimney sweeper, but it seems he has other jobs as well. And, if you take Oliver's age into account, he is a child. This song is about child labor in the earlier parts of the eighteenth and seventeenth century. When the chorus chants 'We are a portrait that leaves you sighing sadly' It is referring to the fact that many children were under this cruel treatment. This song, in my guess, is about child labor. Laissez-faire means the government is not in involved in economics, so companies were able to higher child laborers. Oliver was one of them. He cleaned chimnies, and in a plight to leave the Hell he lived in, the punishers nailed his feet into the floor. He grew suicidal and depressed with his state and he wondered why he, a child, was sentenced to a life like this. So, in saying that he was a 'portrait' he was portraying that he lived a horrible life. Though, adults in that Era was used to child laborers such as Oliver, so he was disregarded. After multiple attempts to end his suffering, he succeeded. And, he recounted in the end that there were other portraits like him, destined to live a life of hard labor under laissez-faire and harsh treatment from masters. But that's just a theory. A vocaloid theory! (I really like game theory and film theory, I am sorry XD)

I have a different theory about the portrait line. I think the portrait line refers to his hanging body. The chimney being a frame around him, and his body being the portrait. And of course it would leave someone upset. The “we are a portrait” I think means that many of the kids had the same life as him, being suicidal, and being a story, or a doll, who’s only purpose is to die.

I think this song is about a chimney cleaner at 19th Century England.See,that time, adults couldn't fit in the chimneys so they hired poor young children (usually boys) to clean them. The wage though was really low. This particular case is about a young boy who was trapped in a situation like this,he hated his job but couldn't do otherwise, and despite his hopes he'd die from infection,he is still alive and kicking. He couldn't run away either,so he just hanged or poisoned himself.

Twaddle: trivial or foolish speech or writing; nonsense talk or write in a trivial or foolish way In other words, Oliver is seen as foolish. His suffering is seen as foolish, unimportant and trivial. His life story and what this song is about is just a "Twaddle of a Flue Faker" not a "Twaddle of Oliver" Putting him into a group name and suggesting that this just another story of another flue faker, meaning there are many stories like this one. It's Unimportant, just another twaddle of a flue faker, like just another sad story of the bunch. Thus, they are twaddles. I'm pretty sure this is about the Victorian era, referring to the the words Flue Faker and Laissez Faire (go look those up if you're interested). Oliver is a flue faker, in other words he cleans chimneys. He really wants to die because his life is one of suffering. In the chorus he sings "I want to run away" probably from his abuse and masters, but since he can't the only way is to die. First it was the rusty nails, that he hoped would poison his blood. "But it did not do the trick." Then when going up in the chimney he was suffocating but his master pulled him back down, once again not allowing him to die. The chorus I interpreted this way. First he sings "I am a portrait, that leaves you sighing sadly" He refers to how people see him, they sigh sadly with pity for him. Much how we sigh like that when we see someone suffering on the street sometimes. He then says "I am THAT Portrait" referring to a specific portrait. I think he refers to a literal portrait of the Flue Fakers in the Victorian era, when people see it they sigh sadly thinking, "Those poor children" or "How they must have suffered back then" He could also be specifying that amogst all the portraits of Flue Fakers, he is THAT one. Like how i said the beginning, he's not seen as an individual. Drawing close to the end he sings "I'll be paper thin and pale" Probably because of his declined health, and the lack of food and nourishment, as Chimney Sweepers were notorious for being pale and thin. He says "The "Scurfs" took my life away" I tried looking into the word "Scurf" and someone said it was used to describe a person who is dirty and smelly. Now, Oliver could be seeing his masters as "Dirty" because of how cruel and wicked they are, saying that they took away his life. He could also be referring to himself and to job of the Chimney Sweeper because of how dirty they always were, being covered in soot most of the time. He says that being a Flue Faker has taken his life away, not referring to "The scurfs" as the other chimney sweepers, but as another person entirely and as the job that came with being one. The next line: "I'm patiently sedated" is a little difficult. It could be his abusive masters drugging him. Describing that he's thin, he's always sedated and that his life has been taken away, and his only exit is to die. But my next theory is more likely because of the following line: "Now my only exit." Whilst he sings this, you see Oliver climbing up onto a chair, but you only see his feet. In the next shot you can't see his feet anymore, telling us that he hung himself. He might have sedated himself before hanging himself. "is the cold poetic Scythe." We commonly associate a scythe with the grim reaper. He describes the scythe as "cold" like how death is lots of times described as cold or freezing, but also "poetic" meaning he was relieved at dying, and saw it as a beautiful or 'poetic' thing. This line also signifies that Oliver is asking if he can finally die now, the word "is" indicating a question. After singing the chorus again he sings "We are a portrait." He is talking about all the other Chimney Sweepers, and how they are all just like him suffering, and wanting to run away. They all have sad stories, and are all the same portrait making people sigh softly. The last lines, "A thud sounding softly" Could be the chair falling backwards as he hangs himself, or his body falling down after his masters found him. "I secretly Disintegrate" Makes the likelihood of the chair falling backwards higher, as he says "Secretly" Meaning he died without anyone in the room, dying without anyone knowing what he was doing. He could also mean that he died secretly, saying that no one cared if he died. It was as if his death was a secret that no one knew about. "Uneasy lamps draw back and forth" is probably just the setting, and the way hanging lamps sway back and forth. A darker explanation could be that when he hangs himself, the rope swings back and forth at first, and from his vision it looks like the lamps are drawing back and forth when it"s actually the rope tied to his neck that's swinging back and forth. "I've waited so long" Doesn't need any explanation. He's waited so long to be relieved of his suffering and is finally by dying. I would talk about how amazing and breathtaking this song is, but my comment should already be taken into custody for being so long. I just really wanted to write down my theory seeing as many people were asking what it's about. I love this song, and maybe a few people find this comment interesting to read. The song is amazing for portraying a story like this.

FYI, 'laissez faire' is the theory (or system) which stated that the goverment should not involve that much in the lives, behavior and development of the people. It is the unwillingness of getting involved in others lives. In this song, it means that many people knew about what the Flue Faker was suffering, but they didn't wanted to involve, neither wanted to do something about it.

This song is so sad when you think about it, especially when you know how old vocaloid Oliver is supposed to be (11 I believe) and what Lazies Faire was/when it was around. This song is about a child being abused back when child labor and basically abusing laborers was legal, a child who is suffering so much he wants to run away and eventually commits suicide.

As we've established...this is song about a Flue Faker (Chimney sweeper) who is suicidal and has tried multiple times to kill himself but fails (until he hangs himself at least). I'm guessing when Oliver says "I am a portrait that leaves you sighing sadly" he either means that looking at his dead body dangling on the rope makes you sad or his sorry and malnourished physical and mental state is pitiful

Fantastic and clear vocals. I have seen very few English producers make such a creepy song. And many do not have such great PVs. Can I just say this to both you, Steampianist and Morb, your talents are beautiful! The music's deep lyrics that usually tell true stories or tells stories that are practically realisitc are just beautiful and usually I have to look into the comments to find good meaning. The lyrics are catchy, and are usually what's stuck in my head as I try to sleep. My favorite songs I've heard from you (I haven't heard all, probably not even near half honestly) usually have Oliver as the voice and it's just amazing! Even if it's not Oliver, the songs are just beautiful. You can change beats or anything of the like in a heart beat and it sounds perfectly normal, and you hide secret things within all of it that most people overlook until they listen to it again. As for the visuals, they're just absolutely stunning! I just adore the art style for these songs! The way the lines are drawn gives it a free style feel, which adds a sort of unsettling feeling in me. The way when there's smooth animation and how it's shown it's drawn over so many times makes it feel alive even if just the same image over and over. The way the images shake when idle just sticks a sort of anxious feeling in my stomach. I love how most the lyrics (at least I think) aren't typed, and are written. While it is obvious to see when some is typed, the other feels free handed and just fits perfectly with the dark lyrics. The visuals and art just really helps fit together the metaphor or story being told with the lyrics. Neither of you ever fail to amaze and impress me. I get really into the stories being told in the songs and find myself imagining the situation. Keep up the fantastic work and never stop being yourselves.

I think its about a boy who wanted to die, ( sorry if my interpretation is dumb -.-) that's why he smiled while being nailed. He planned to suffocate in the chimney. But he was saved, so he hung himself. and the portrait is his sad life, so that's why the portrait at the end has a red X, but there are a lot of portraits that wanted to die! Plus I love the creaking at the end!! I can just Imagine his body swinging back and forth~ :3 (I'm awful..)

The way that the colors used in Steampianist's earlier music videos are usually only black, white, and red show how everything is so grey in his stories and how the characters dying/bleeding is like the only colorful part of their life. Steampianist, I don't know if you'll see this, but you are truly an incredible artist. Everything from your melodies to your lyrics to your music videos, all of it is so poetic and carefully thought out. Bravo.

By "I am a portrait which leaves you sighing sadly.", he's probably referring to the "laissez faire" who now look back on him as a sad event they were unable to do anything about and sigh. "portrait" is something to view and many portraits were made based on people/events which took place in the past, so... This is just a thought though, I guess? I'm thinking this song is about a young boy (who's occupation is being a chimney sweeper in the 19 century) that is mistreated by his owners. Let me tell you something, back in the late 1800's to the early 1900's, young children were used to clean chimneys since adults can't fit in there, so kids are left to be with (some) cruel peoples houses and clean it. This song is a view point of one of the children workers. We can see in the beginning of the lyrics, Oliver says *"I am a portrait that leaves you sighing sadly. Oh, Laissez Faire. What have you done? I want to run away."* Which means something like *"I am just another kid working miserably and making you sad as you pass by"* Laissez faire is an expression of letting your own attitude of letting things take their own course without doing anything. Which is why Oliver says something like *"I want to run away"* because he either regrets his actions or hates his masters cruelty. Next stanza of the lyrics are *"The Nobblers nailed my feet on the floor. It starts to rust and attack my blood. I start to feel myself smile, Slowly losing myself. But it did not do the trick. Oh, Woe is me. Oh, Can't they see that?"* The world Nobbler is supposed to be a British word for *"A thimblemans accomplice or shill, who poses as a player of the game to suggest that it is easy to win."* so this stanza could mean Oliver's masters are acting as if this is a game and they're *"winning"* , nailing Oliver's feet to the ground with rust and infects him, he begins to smile as he feels like he's dying, thus the line *"slowly losing myself"* is metaphorically saying *"I'm dying slowly".* Now onto the next part is *"It will be a wrack up. I'll make sure. When they stick me up the chimney. And now the air escapes me, Slowly losing myself. But my master dragged me back down."* Oliver is trying to explain that his next idea of dying is losing air from the chimney but his master prevents him from dying by dragging him out of the chimney. The lines *"It'll will be a wrack up. I'll make sure"* and *"And now the air escapes me, slowly losing myself."* Is Oliver saying *"This time will do the trick, I'll make sure of it!"* so he's in the chimney and stays there, it's dirty in there and there's lack of oxygen up there, so he begins to lose breath as he slowly dies. Next is *"I'll be paper, Thin and pale. The 'Scurfs' took my life away. I am patiently sedated. And now my only exit is...."* The *"I'll be paper, thin and pale"* could mean that he's weak, fragile, skinny and very white. Symbolizing he's dying. Scurf's means *"flakes on the surface of the skin that form as fresh skin develops below, occurring especially as dandruff."* So this might mean that his skin is trying to rebuild itself, but he doesn't want to heal, he wants to die. *"I am patiently sedated"* means to be in deep sleep with a drug. It could have been a metaphor by saying *"I'm in a deep sleep by a drug"* , the drug could be his suicide method. *"And now my only exit is..."* if you've seen the music video of this song, you'll notice he's gone from the screen and the screen scribbles into black. The sudden tone of him saying *"is..."* means he possibly died from his method. *"Is the cold... Is the cold poetic... Scythe."* A poetic/poem is a highly imaginative expression of a a piece of writing, a Scythe is a tool used to crop grass or fields. I'm assuming the scythe in this scenario is the Grim reaper since they always carry a scythe as a weapon, they're resembled to death so this could mean what this line is saying. *"For we are a portrait that leaves you sighing sadly. Oh, Laissez Faire. What have you done? We want to run away."* this line speaks for itself, instead of the original saying *"I am a portrait"* we see that the lyrics changes into *"we are a portrait"* , this might define as the other children are sharing similar experiences with Oliver here. As it might mean they've also died too which results in the lyric *"we"* instead of *"I"* now that we've seen Oliver commit suicide in the video. *"A thud sounding softly. I secretly disintegrate. Uneasy lamps draw back and forth. I've waited. For so long..."* The *"A thud sounding softly. I secretly disintegrate."* means his body thuds into the ground *"softly"* and his body slowly begins to shut down. The reason why I say *"softly"* is because the lyrics say the thud sound was soft, but I believe the sound wasn't loud enough for the masters to hear. So that's why I believe I don't think it was soft at all. *"Uneasy lamps draw back and forth"* , this could be a metaphor for the noose. Since I'm assuming Oliver possibly committed suicide by hanging. The swinging of lamps from back and forth could be the way Olivers body swung slightly as he took his own life. *"I've waited. For so long..."* this can easily be intercepted as Oliver has been having these thoughts and methods to where he's desperate to commit to it. This is just a theory though!! Hope you enjoyed it ^^

So is this song basically about a boy being sold to the nobles to only be tortured, making him go slowly insane and by the end of this he dies by being hanged up on the wall like a portrait?

+Lps_Luna well, it talks about laissez faire, which was a policy back in the 1800s during industrialism stating that the government shouldn't get involved in business, leading to a lack of any real labor laws. considering that, it's probably a song about the mistreatment of laborers back then

chimney sweeping was an extremely dangerous job that had to be performed by children (because adults couldn't always fit in chimneys) but due to "laissez-faire" capitalism, there weren't any laws saying they couldn't.

laissez faire- "the policy of knowing there is a issue but doing nothing to stop it. " Basically when he asks "what have you done?" the answer to the question he is asking is "nothing", they have done nothing to help him so he is allowed to be left to continued to be exploited. Refers to the days when there was a free market", where everyone was allowed to monitor themselves with little interference from the government. This lead to heavy abuse by employers and employees were basically slaves with no rights.
