Tip for my unconfident dancers: look in the mirror, practicing at home with no one looking, to get comfortable with seeing and feeling your body move more confidently and experimenting with the moves more as there is no fear of failure or doing something wrong. Even a small mirror will do, literally stare at your face, build your self esteem. Place a phone camera on selfie mode and use it as a mirror. Good luck!

I had tried learning to dance for over ten years in dance classes, and I finally found a teacher who gave me a 1-on-1 lesson and immediately said "engage your core" and MY LIFE CHANGED. I FINALLY knew why my dancing always looked so awkward and why I couldn't move fast, and I always overcompensated for it by trying to make moves bigger or sharper when all I needed to do was engage my core. But even since learning that, I haven't seen that dance advice ANYWHERE else! So thank you Steezy for mentioning it!! I really suggest mentioning it so much more often, though! Because to me, it felt like a dancer secret that every other dancer knew except me, so I know there are dancers out there who still don't know to engage their core and this tip should be blessed upon them all! I wish that every class would offhand mention to engage your core just as both a reminder and to hopefully bestow this lifechanging tip on dancers who had never known to do so (like me). Thank you for all these new tips as well! I had stopped falling off balance a few years ago, ironically when I subbed to this channel. Now I know why! 😆❤

@katecosettevocals2 жыл бұрын
@@mariaeugenius the class I was referring to was a local one in my city, before I found Steezy 😅 the best advice I can pass along is that the idea of engaging your core is the feeling you get like when you’re doing crunches, just making sure your, like, lower abdomen muscles are tight and “engaged”/turned on. Another way of doing it is as if you pretend you’re startled by someone and you flinch or whip around, your abs instinctively engage so that you’ll be able to move quickly. You just want to keep that feeling in your abs the whole time you dance! (But if there’s any Steezy people who want to correct me if I’m wrong on that please do haha). That’s at least what works amazingly well for me!! ☺️

I definitely remember my awkward dancing days. And here is my take on it. Get out of your comfort zone and try to be picky with yourself. Look at any move you may be executing and note “what can I do to make this better?”. I also spent some time looking at other ppl dancing online. To see what parts of the body needed improvement. Also note, your body will not move 100% like others. Some moves may look different on your body type. Find a way that it’ll suit your own body. And finally, don’t be afraid of failure or looking weird. The more you are afraid, the more you’ll think your a bad dancer and you won’t improve. You will! Results come slowly but surely! I think back to 3 - 4 years ago now and I was pretty bad, but I danced anyways. And now, I’m quite confident with my dancing and am still looking to improve whatever I can.

Thank you so much! I am going to start practicing after watching this! I am one of those people who gets compliments for rhythm and dance when I get lost in the moment, but it's very rare that I allow myself to let go like that. I just feel too conscious usually. That's because of being bullied a lot while growing up, and also because of growing up in white culture where dancing was not nurtured or encouraged by most parents. We were told to stop moving when dancing about as kids, as though we were being naughty or something. That's how kids lose touch with their natural movement because they freeze up and feel scared or ashamed like they are doing something wrong. Not okay when parents do that. Definitely gonna make up for this now :)

As for the balance and the importance of keeping soft knees, as a fan of couple dances I would add, the importance of keeping soft elbows while doing couple dance. The same way your knees are the key point of your balance on the ground, your elbows are the key point of your balance with your partner, no matter if you are a leader or a follower. Any time your elbows are stiff/straight/fully extended you won't be able to either lead nor follow anything from there. So keep them soft to keep the energy flowing between the two of you! Stiff elbows are also what gives away "fake" couple dancing (like in movies when not performed by professionals /actually good dancers) because in real life nobody could actually improvise like you normally do in the social dance, unless they keep soft elbows.

I came here because my best friend of 8 years is getting married in February, and i have to dance ofc, and the thing is that I'm a sickk introvert, I've only danced infront of my old friends back in 2018 2019, since than I've rarely danced, my dance "now" feels awkward and i literally don't wanna embarrass myself infront of so many people and i needd a lot of practice, idk what em supposed to do now🙂 I'll try my best because i have to overcome this..

I have synesthesia so dancing is kind of trivial for me, but your tip about balance could really help me TBH when i pull alll these elaborate moves and sways. What improved my dancing was finding confidence in my skills and using that (oh and also having an audience makes me dance better...?)

My problem with dancing is that I'm not strong enough to move my torso from one side to another fast without losing balance so I started doing pilates to train my core

I love dancing but when I record myself I look really awkward... I dont just do random moves I learn dances from like kpop or just dance and I try to do them but if I look at my vid I make I delete it because it looks like idk what I am doing while I know the moves and even if I know the right poses I just can't do it right and it will look cringe, I will definitely focus on these things bit mostly the workout thing bc I am really weak and I never work out plus I'm still 13 years old

I am 17 and the problem with me is when I randomly start dancing in front of mirror I do pretty good but whenever I record myself I mess up. My body looks too stiff and even tho I remember the moves it doesn't really look like I'm dancing rather than I'm just moving my hands💀pls the struggle is real

i’m 16 and the issue with me is that in my head, i know the dance moves, and i actually DO know the moves with my body too, but i get embarrassed when i see myself dance. 😭 and i just feel awkward and uncomfortable, even if i’m dancing alone.

I'm not a good dncer because i don't practice for real, when i dance i just let my body do what it feels like and i know i look ridiculous but it wasn't always like this, it was something I've learned
