The fact that he didn't know that was katherine it was do dump like he knew Elena wouldn't go back to him because she loved Damon. and because that girl who died on the bridge who loved Stefan is gone .yet Katherine's desire and visions very blurry she didn't acted much as Elena she only wanted Stefan and no wonder she was quickly discovered that She was katherine

I think at first he kind of wanted for it to be real, you know...that 'Elena' was truly coming back to him. Maybe that's why he didn't want to see how she wasn't really Elena for so long. Or maybe he's always had this idea of Elena in his head, this ideal version of her, which is why he never truly bothered to find out who the real Elena is in the first place, thus not being able to notice the difference.
