Steinhart Ocean One 39 Ceramic Review ( + Straps )

Review of one of the best bang per buck divers in the sub 500 dollar category. This Steinhart Ocean One 39 Ceramic has awesome specs for the money. ETA/Sellita movement, AR coated sapphire, 300m water resistant, great solid link bracelet with screwed links and milled clasp. The size is smaller than the "role-model" Rolex Submariner which makes it great for smaller wrists like mine! The 47mm lug to lug makes it a great fit for a sub 7 inch wrist. Simple and monochrome dial makes it a strap monster and it's hard to find a strap that won't look good on this watch! In the end I show you the Steinhart on a variety of straps. i bought the ceramic bezel ocean1 gmt prior to a 3-month back-packing holiday in the far east. i wanted a tough gmt watch with excellent water resistance and this ticked all the boxes. whilst travelling, i wore it on a nato strap but once home i fitted a black stingray strap, which really suits the watch

Pretty cool and pretty neat, I own the 42mm version. Yes going on 3 years ownership, this watch is awesome haven't tried of it yet. A great Swiss watch is truly the GIFT that keeps giving. Its accurate within COSC Specs at plus 6 seconds a day; some days it doesn't gain anytime. My daily beater one and only watch.

Actually 39mm is a bit small for my taste. I would like 42mm but chose 39mm because of the straight lugs of Steinhart. The 42mm version has ca 50mm l2l and it may be too much for my 17cm/6,7 inch wrist.

I just bought an almost 2 year old one off a work colleague, I love it. My 15 watch collection includes Seiko, Orient, 2 Casio Marlins, 3 Invictas (1953, Pro Diver and a Swiss made green dial quartz with a white pointer dial motif and sapphire crystal with cyclops) and 2 G Shocks. And my 2 favourite quartz divers; the Citizen BN150 and 190 models. This watch kicks them all out of the park! 3 days in it is way more accurate than any of the automatics listed above. I will never part with this watch. I don't want a Rolex. This watch is all I will ever need. I could go on for hours but there is beer to drink while I admire this watch. If you can get one, jump on it!

I have the ocean one gmt 39 with the ceramic pepsi bezel. The biggest complaint people have with this watch is it looks too much like a Rolex gmt master II. The people I hang with have never seen a Rolex gmt master II. So I do not have a problem with that.

Nice review. Yesterday, I bought one of these, used. My only complaint is the lume is very weak. I love the overall look and I am very satisfied with the quality of the finishing and the movement. The seller provided me with a nice, no-name rubber strap with a decent deployant clasp. I will likely soon be switching to the rubber.

Interesting. I recently bought a Vostok K-35 (my most expensive watch yet) which has the strongest lume I've ever seen...but it fades quickly. I'm planning to save up and buy a daily wearer below 500$...torn between a simple field watch like Boldr Venture, or some submariner style diver, maybe a Seiko, maybe something else. Double green, double glazed Steinhart was in consideration, but if the lume is not much better than on a four times cheaper Vostok, I'll keep looking...the Boldr reportedly isn't stellar in the lume department either, but it has a lot of other stuff going for it, like elegance and lightness.

I imagine something like a Lorier Neptune, but with a date (I know there's a date on the Hyperion, but I have no use for a GMT hand and bezel), maybe with some numerals. I'm gonna buy it in a year or two, depending on when the war ends and prices start behaving again (they're about to double, any time now), so maybe something show up in the meantime....

I have this same watch model and I really like it. It's a solid Diver but at the same time sort of discreet since it's not super big or bulky. The lume could be better and a slim buckle with some kind of diver's extension would be a great improvement, but again it's already very good like that!

I’ve had 3 Steinharts. I’m not understanding the lume complaint. The BGW9 lume is always not going to as bright as green lume. Different wavelength performance. Also, the overall initial brightness of lume is not the best indication of how legible it will be for 6-8-10 hours into the night. I rather have a dim lume that will last all night, than a bright lume that will completely fade away in an hour

That’s true! Do you mean that bgw9 glows longer that lumibrite? I have found the opposite to be true in my experience. I’m fine with bgw9 and lume is not super important to me. I like the blue color more than the green, but in my reviews I just state the fact that it is not as bright as lumibrite for example. There are always viewers who don’t know and want to find out 😊

I felt that way years ago; about 10 + years back and thats what kept me from pulling the trigger at first. But I finally did pull that trigger in April of 2021 and purchased a 42mm Ocean One Black Ceramic. The style has grown on me, I love it and she serves me well at a COSC +6 a day. Some days it won't gain any time ❤

Looks like the lumed triangle on your bezel shows the same behavior as the one on my 39mm Ocean Green. Meaning it's turned slightly yellow. I bought mine brand new about two years ago and I'm very sure it wasn't that color when I bought it. From what I hear, Steinhart will replace these "patina-ed" inserts, but I haven't contacted them yet.

"Controversies" aside, this one and Invicta's makes a more pragmatic mind think: why does Rolex Submariner costs so much for the same basic design and certain capabilities? It's easy to note that for the "original" there's far more than just a superior movement and proprietary materials.

Yeah well this one does that even more than the Invicta. Probably huge overhead costs at Rolex. Swiss labor costs a lot and everything is made is Switzerland etc. And there is undoubtedly a premium you pay just for the brand ofcourse, but there’s more to it than that!

I haven’t done any timing regarding this, but if you’re familiar with BGW9 it’s pretty basic performance for that type of lume. Worse than Seiko Lumibrite but still good.

I have a San Martin SN019 and when you put them side by side the Steinhart stands out. Quality is better on the Steinhart. Clasp, movement functionality (my SM has the PT5000) and cyclops stand out. The cyclops on my SM is maligned (off by one minute). Only thing I would change on the Steinhart is to make the cyclops 2x. Otherwise it’s great.

Well it’s BGW9 superluminova. It’s nice in my opinion but as you can see on the video, Seiko’s lumibrite is brighter and it’s also longer lasting. I do however like the blue color of BGW9👍🏻

Yes well comparing it in a way. They’re both homages of the Sub but in different priceclasses. Invicta is under 100usd sometimes even 60-70usd while this one is around 350-400 maybe. The Steinhart is obviously going to be superior in every way and it sure is! But if you just want a cheaper homage and not this kind of legit quality homage then someone might go for the Invicta before this :)

@@NordicWatchChannel I literally just became curious about steinhart. Don’t know why. I always had Seiko and became very disappointed lately with its pricing and drop on quality. So sadly had to find a replacement and got Orient and slowly tried to accept it. If I look at a 200 meters Seiko it will be over $800. If I had that kind of money for a watch I would buy a Swiss one, like maybe a Tag Heuer. I thought maybe I should start exploring the Swiss made for first time. Tissot seemed to be at Seiko level and financially reachable.

Well there are many 200M Seikos for less than 500 but I still agree that their value for money offering has been declining.. 800 is a tricky category! Sure there are Swatch Group brands like Tissot and Certina offerings. I might recommend checking out Sinn, Yema, Squale, Hamilton (also Swatch) Group) for less generic options maybe. Especially if you’re open to consider second hand options, it becomes a very interesting price-category!

@@sleepmusic10 no bias here. I actually own a 5 digit Sub 16610, two 6 digit subs 116610 & no date 114060 plus SD43 50th anniversary. I’ve owned both Steinhart and Ginault. No comparison. Ginault is clean and the finish is very very impressive even under the loop. You can get better magnification with most micro brand cyclops and even with the knock off replicas than this Steinhart. The clasp is dime a dozen with zero effort. Off the shelf with a logo slapped on. I’m just saying, they need to improve these shortcomings. I gave away the Steinhart and still have the Ginault. You don’t have to accept my opinion. These are the facts in terms of built quality. Both Ginault and Steinhart lack originality. But one is 10x better than the other. Hope you enjoy what you like in good health my friend. No reason to get overprotective over a brand. Steinhart was very popular 6-7 years ago. They need to start improving the fit, finish and quality.

@Harry Hewitt first time I hear someone not going along with the near fanaticism of seemingly all watch reviewers when it comes to clasps on inexpensive watches. 👍👍 Cheap clasps on inexpensive watches have never bothered me, as long as they work as intended. Recently bought a Steinhart, this clasp is perfectly serviceable.
