How to Install a Painless Wiring Harness on an Early Ford Bronco!!! My 1975 Ford Broncos wiring was a mess, so I bought the painless wiring harness and it was great! This is the kit I used: tomsoffroad.com/parts/66-77-f...
The wiring on these 50 year old Ford Broncos is in rough shape. Before I did this, none of my dash lights worked, my gas gauge didn't work and I had electrical gremlins all over the place. So, I went with the Painless Wiring kit for my Early Bronco and I couldn't be happier! One step closer to the 2020 Bronco (jk).
Below are some links to some of the main sections of the install to make the steps easier to navigate:
00:00 - Introduction
02:54 - Tools need to install a wiring harness
05:33 - Dash Wiring harness installation
16:29 - Installing the dash on an Early Bronco
20:40 - Tail wiring harness installation
21:21 - Engine wiring harness installation
Tools:
Wire Strippers: amzn.to/31gs6hR
Wire Crimper: amzn.to/3fVsDd2
Also, here is a link to the PDF of the entire installation book: bit.ly/PainlessManual

Eric from Painless sent me these updates on Classicbroncos.com, so I will put them here for anyone doing this: p. 45 of the manual shows how to connect the gear indicator light to a factory column. The ground on the column, this isn't a ground for the column, it's a ground for the horn button. The factory horn button was power activated. I didn't like the idea of a battery power source running through the column, so I changed it to a ground activation source. Even though the column is grounded the horn button isn't since it was originally supposed to have power. Harness routing, p. 20 shows you what to do for the firewall hole locations. This would have saved you from having to route it after your dash as in, and p.53 says to install grommets after the harness is routed through the holes. It's also mentioned on p. 57 to loosely install zip ties until all connections are made. This will allow you to still push, and pull the harness while routing while still holding the harness in place until you are ready to tighten the zip ties

I could not agree with you more. Been working on cars for 28 years but never fooled with too much electrical. Following the Painless manual, I was able to rewire my 88 Grand Wagoneer in roughly 3 weeks. Had to build my own harnesses for cruise, power locks / windows, wipers, rear window, seats, and A/C. The manual is organized and explains each wire. Best advice in the manual is to remove the drivers seat!!! Customer service was very helpful too. Now I'm ordering a harness for my 83 C10.

So much great information! My dad has an earlier ’70s model of the original Bronco sitting in his yard that he swears up and down that he’s going to get road worthy. Granted, he’s in his 70s , so I take what he says with a grain of salt. I’ve been trying to get him to pass it on to me, but so far he’s reluctant. I believe I’ll wind up with it eventually and am already researching how to restomod it. I appreciate all of your videos and the information I learn from them….

Thanks for doing the video. Simply because I’m getting ready to do the same thing on my 66 Mustang. Some things apply, some don’t. I believe I’m going with a different manufacturer of the harness, not a price issue, but the others offer newer replacement switches for your project. As time and wear use up the parts. Heat builds up resistance in the older switches and connections... I’m more of a fan of soldering the connections, but that s everyone choice. Any new harness is better than what was in there before! Thanks again.

Thanks for your video. I'm installing a painless harness on my '77 Jeep CJ 7 that has a '78 Wagoneer 360 in it. I too am a little confused about the ballast resistor question. I believe I am running a very similar Duraspark system like yours. Jeep used Ford ignition systems during this period. Like you I am not running points. I wonder if I should use their ballast resistor or not?? Even if I do not need to do you think installing it would cause me any problems? I've heard like you said that the ballast resistors are only for systems running points, but have heard lots of other opinions. Did you find later on that you should have run the ballast resistor provided? Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Looks like a good kit EXCEPT most connections dont use the factory switch plugs, you just plug each wire into said switch individually. Thats really cheap! I just recently bought this same kit for my 76 f100. Im considering returning it. Didnt realize they don't make an option for factory plugs.

Alright guys, could use some help here... Working on installing the '66-'77 Painless harness on my '71 model. However, my '71 has a few motor upgrades, one of which is the alternator. The current alternator appears to be a single wire alternator with one wire connected directly to the starter solenoid (+ side). The painless harness has four wires (black/red, orange, black/yellow, and red). The Painless installation manual illustrates installs for two styles of alternators, but not for a single wire alternator. I can't find a make/model on the alternator anywhere and it doesn't have any additional terminals (from what I can see) other than the one already connected directly to the solenoid. Any help/pointers here would be greatly appreciated. Nashville Early Bronco great video, I have watched it several times now through my installation process! Thanks again and keep posting.
@NashvilleEarlyBronco
@NashvilleEarlyBronco 5 жыл бұрын
Hmm... Yeah that is interesting. I don't have my book in front of me, but on a single wire alternator, you just want to make sure the one wire connected to the alternator is the wire running back to the battery (maybe the black red). I think one of the other wires runs the voltage gauge on the dash and I forget what the 3rd wire is for. Hope that helps.

Hi Jon...great video as usual...very informative. Question...did you ever get an answer on your ballast resistor query. I am currently installing my new harness. I also am using the dura spark ignition set up (albiet I have a Centech harness). I was supplied a ballast resistor with the harness but ,like painless, the instructions are confusing weather its required or not. There was no ballast resistor in my original wiring. I believe our years used a resistive wire in the ignition circuit as opposed to a ballast resistor (from my research anyway). I guess painless and Centech didn't incorporate that resistive wire hence the need for a ballast resistor? Any insights you have are much appreciated. Keep up the great work!!!

So when you did your harness did you remove the old harness completely? Or did you only remove sections of it
@NashvilleEarlyBronco
@NashvilleEarlyBronco 5 жыл бұрын
Removed it completely and laid the two side by side. Then moved anything the old harness had to the new harness (if the new harness didn’t already have it).

Nashville Early Bronco when taking the harness out does the main part of it come off the dash and 2 looms from the firewall and a loom that goes back to the taillights?
@NashvilleEarlyBronco
@NashvilleEarlyBronco 5 жыл бұрын
Yep exactly. Sometimes two looms up front. I think mine had two looms through the firewall
@brockarmstrong9896
@brockarmstrong9896 5 жыл бұрын
Nashville Early Bronco does the loom that goes to the rear lights mount on the frame or is it under the carpet? Mines a 76 so i don’t think it be different than yours
@NashvilleEarlyBronco
@NashvilleEarlyBronco 5 жыл бұрын
Mounts on the frame. It goes out the drivers side firewall, then runs down to the frame and back

A lot. I don’t remember but it was over a few weeks. But I’m working on my bronco nights and weekends while my wife and 3 kids sleep. And trying to film everything it always take sooo much longer

That’s pretty quick if you were only working on it on nights and weekends! I plan to rewire mine and I’m familiar with wiring because I do car audio all the time and feel confident but I know surprises can always show up that’s why I’m trying to get as much help and advice as possible 😂 could you give me a basic example of how the wiring is routed? I know half the wiring goes behind the dash but as far as how the other parts are routed like the back end and engine/transmission I’m not sure of thanks!
@NashvilleEarlyBronco
@NashvilleEarlyBronco 5 жыл бұрын
All the wiring starts behind the glove box and goes across the dash to the gauge cluster. From there some runs back out to the passenger side of the engine bay and some runs out the drivers side. It’s really not complex. It’s a lot of making connectors and heat shrinking. Most of my time was spent trying to get all the wire looking tidy, zip tying everything.
