This made me feel alot better I’m that mid level blue belt that you talk about at the end and I been back two weeks , I feel like a white belt at times , I find myself getting pinned by big strong white belts and I spent the round surviving … it hurts the pride but ego is no good in this sort anyways … one day at a time 👊

Oohhh, I needed this. My club closed down back at the beginning of Covid-19 in my country in early 2020, and then I fell out of the rhythm and haven't been back since. I'm now 20kg heavier, and need to get back to it, and I've been so put off by how bloody hard it's going to be.

It is really important to curb your expectations. I had a baby right after covid so it has been a couple years since I seriously trained. I started grappling in 1999, but I am telling you the purple belts were running through me. It was really tough on the ego lol

Thank you so much for this clip!! I was a bjj beginner and I loved the sport sooooo much, but due to army duty, injuries, etc.. I had to stop training for several years. Now I'm finally feeling ready to train again but I was so concerned.. After watching this clip I made up my mind and will start training again really soon. Thank you so much professor!!

Just curious I watched your hip replacement video and just had mine done 4 weeks ago . Your video helped me tremendously before and after surgery . Any chance if you can make a video of what you’ve done after the 4 week mark ? Appreciate all your videos

Stephan, I've been following your KZbin channel for almost a decade now and I love the content you generously put on there for us BJJ enthusiasts. Could you please make a video about injury prevention for older (30+) grapplers? Are there any specific strength & conditioning protocols you'd recommend? If you could go back in time, would you train differently? Thanks! 🙏

appreciate this, being older near 50, missing months at a time, it's a chore but its fun. The hardest part is getting home from work and gearing up and thinking, man do I really want kids half my age crushing me right now or running me ragged.

To quote a friend of mine who got his black belt at age 60, 'The goal of training is to be able to make it to the NEXT training session.' So do whatever you need to do not to get crushed and discouraged, including picking the right training partners, sitting out rounds, and tapping just when you're uncomfortable

I had one of my fingers injured during training and it's still not really ever healed back to 100%. "Just a bum finger, that's all that's keeping you off the mats?" you say? Yeah, might not be a big deal to most people, but to a piano player it's a pretty big deal. It's made me nervous to get back on and possibly reinjure it or worse, another finger that's even more important to playing. But I don't want to quit either. It's time to get back to it. It's been about 4 months now. Going back is gonna suck, I know it.

Yep, I must concur. Just returned to judo after 2.5years away. My body had a hard time doing what my brain wanted it to do...and even though I've been getting to the gym regularly, I had enough muscle knots the next day that I felt like a oak tree trunk

Pffff haven't watched the video yet, but this hits home. 4 surgeries in ¾ year, got Covid twice. Staph... Now I'm left with joint pain in my elbows and shoulders. Just started BJJ again 3 months ago, unexpected knee surgery. Got fat as well. Since the start of Covid I have restarted like 5-6 times. It is getting harder each time. I'm 48 as well. Hope to start again this week/next week. But boy, it is not fun anymore.

That's really, really unfortunate! At the same time as you get back to training try to make sure that your diet is on point and that you're also taking care of your recovery (sleep, stretching), and maybe some additional easy weight training once a week.
