This is the greatest standard ever on a snooker table. 7 centuries in a best of 19 is insane. The fact that nobody has surpassed 7 centuries even in a best of 33 or 35 matches shows how insane hendry played that day.

Hendry by 1996 maxed out in terms of how much he could improve and still remain as much ahead of the rest of the field as before which was also improving fast. Hendry still improved after 1996 (he won a 7th world title in 1999 as proof that he did indeed improve back end of the 1990's he wouldn't have won a 7th in 1999 had he played at his level of 1990 and 1992 while winning st the Crucible (his 2nd half of the 1990's was still the 4th greatest hslf decade statistically in terms of triple crown success despte beibg clnless successful but the fied 2nd half of the 1990's was one of the best ever assembled it was too difficult for the same person to continue to win every single one) but was not quite so far superior to the rest of the field at the tail end of the 1990's the way he was earlier in the decade, he was just not invincible any longer. Invincibiliry is not something that lasts forver. Being greater younger doesn't automatically equate to being even greater older.

Wayne Holnes - get your facts straight before you comment.nobody has ever made 5 centuries in a row Except for stephen maguire but that was over 2 matches. The record is 6 in 8 frames by stephen hendry. So as i said this is the best anyone has played its just a fact. Nobody in 25 years since has made 7 centuries in a match so how you can say anybody can do it is laughable..

In the 1994 UK final, Hendry defeated Ken Doherty 10-5, making 7 centuries in the match. This performance has been described by snooker journalist David Hendon as "possibly the best anybody has ever played".

@@craigfowler7098 Doherty helped to make this a memorable final. Doherty managed to win all 3 frames in he afternoon session where he was well in the frame, and in the evening after taking another Hendry century in the opening frame of it won the next 2 frames he was in the hunt to tale it to 6-5. Don't forget (or at least some on here don't even realise) in the same tournament that Hendry was taken to 9-8 twice including Ebdon in the semi final, Doherty beat O'Sullivan in the quarter finals. So this was a memorable tournament, Hendry never got it all his own way.

It's far too demanding at the elite professional level for the same person to maintain such high octane snooker and continue to top snd top it again it for 2 or 3 full decades and to remsin the permanent world number one for the whole of the rest of their csreer (nobody in the professionsl era ever has such as winning 7 world titles, 5 or 6 UK's and 5 or 6 masters in the same decade for 2 or 3 decades running) Other players were getting in earlier in frames scoring and winning frsmes in one visit consistently by 1996 not just Hendry any more meaning thst Hendry wasn't automatically guaranteed to be first in in every frame of every match of every tournament any longer from 1996 on, and less opponent missing of frame ball to allow Hendry to make s successful counter attsck from 55 to 65 points down in a frame to pinch it if an opponent had a rare chsnce of winning more than 1 or 2 frsmes of a whole 8 frame multisession vs Hendry. Post 1995 opponents taking just 1 frame off Hendry was no longer a remarkable achievement. Doherty proved better thsn just winning 1 frame off Hendry in the 1994 UK Chsmpionship final. Doherty had a win win over Hendry in 1997 world championship final as much as Taylor and Johnson win wins over Davis in 1985 and 1986 st the venue. 18 frames won is 18 frsmes won snd it's not like Doherty didn't genuinely win any frames proper in the 1997 world chsmpionship final, he got to 18 first vs peak Hendry. When Taylor and Johnson best Davis in 1985 and 1986 world championship finals the focus was on Taylor and Johnson thst thrh both produced great win the camera was all on Taylor and Johnson. But when Doherty won, Doherty didn't receive all the focus of attention that Taylor and Johnson.

While Hendry''s tied with 7 world titles Hendry still remains the greatesr. But if someone else wins an extra world title to Hendry and if Hendry doesn't win another world title, they take over as greatest. Hendry still greatest, but only on a tie breaker now compaed to before 2022 where before then he was the clear greatest. Anybody who manages to win 8 world titles vs Hendry's 7 if that actually happens doesn't have to make 5 or 6 centuries in a session in a Crucible final and 10+ centuries in total in the same final, plus win 4 more world in a row in addition to the one they just won to overtake Hendry as the greateet. Just winning one more world title than Hendry, they takes over, but certainly don't have to do something ridiculous like win 12 or 13 world titles by 2029 or 2031 combined with a certain composition. Twkk about expecting other players to go through hoope Hendry only won 5 world titles in a row (nobody else has, that is what is keeping Hendry ahead while tied on 7 world titles ) not 15 world titles in a row (though nobody else has either.) yet you'd think he did going by the tone of some of the comments on here.

Laughable drivel from the usual band of Ronnie fanatics and Barry Hearns Year Zero merchants. I wasn't a Hendry fan during this time because I was a Jimmy White admirer and was still hurting from his World Final losses. But you can't ignore the fact that nobody has made 7 centuries in a first to ten match, let alone in the final of one of snookers big three. I'd also add its even more impressive when you view it in the context of the time he made it in relation to the number of centuries the rest of the tour was making. This would be like a player making 30 tournament centuries in today's game with its fast cloths and generous pockets. In 1994 this was revolutionary stuff in terms of its brutal efficiency.

@@johnmccaughey2722 But 7 centuries (best of 19), 6 or 7 centuries (best of 17), including 5 centuries in a whole session of the same match was not produced by Hendry all 1994 UK championships, let alone again and again since. Thst is more like Hendry peaked at the right time in one of the 3 big tournaments not doing it every round against all opponents in the UK Chanpionships, the Masters and the World Championships every single year. It's impossible for the same person to peak to that extent even in all of the big tournaments the whole time yesr in year out, and nobody has achieved it before, then or since. People say Hendry made 5 or 6 centuries per session time after time but I recall James beat Hendry at the Crucible in 1991, White, McManus and O'Sullivan beat Hendry in 3 successive years 1991 to 1993, and McManus beat Hendry at the Mastera in 1994 at a time when Hendry was seen as being invincible but I don't recall him making 5 or 6 centuries per session like it was the norm back then either.

Such fest of 7 centuries in a match has only been achieved once per player who has actuslly done it. Not even peak Hendry has done 7 centuries in a match on a regular basis whether best of 19, best of 25, beet of 31, best of 33 or best of 35. Even peak Hendry has not produced 5 centuries regular sutomatic clockwork in an 8 frame multisession either and even when Hendry made 5 centuries vs Doherty in best of 35 in 1997 world championship final it still wasn't enough to keep his Crucible winning streak going. A standard too far for the same person to achieve 7 centuries every best of 19 match and above.

Hendry not the only plsyer to prioduce 4+ centuries in an 8 frame multisession. Even Mountjoy made 3 centuries in successive frames in the 1988 UK final and those were in the days when it was very rare to see more than a single century in a session, and the vast majority of sessions way back then didn't usually see one century. 6 centuries by the same person in a whole of a single 8 frame multisession end to end has never been achieved before. But when 2 players at peak performance are well matched by trading centuries and winning frames in one visit in first visit of the frame you can conceivably make one it will be hard to see the same person do any better than match Hendry's 5 centuries in same session. But in the 1994 UK championship, the final was the only time Hendry made 5 centuries same session the entire tournament that yewr he didn't exactly achieve it in every round he peaked for the final, so it was a rare achievement, so there aint many chances for one player to make 5 or more in same session because they cancel each other out.

On days like this Hendry was unplayable and a match for anyone in any era of the game. He set the standard and way of playing the game that the current players have built their game around as well. But it has evolved further since then, they’re even more ruthless at clearing up (this is prime Hendry, he wasn’t like this all the time during that season never mind the whole of the 90s) Also, Hendry’s tactical game was far below today’s game because his opponents were nowhere near as ruthless at taking their opportunities back then as they would be today. You can possibly even see that here in fact, because even here at his best he lost 5 frames. Prime vs Prime, Ronnie would beat Hendry. But that’s normal in any sport, you learn from your previous era and improve on it...

No none of those other 7 centuries in a match since were done in a best of 19. But anybody making m 7 in a best of 25 or a best of 33 are still great performances. They're records for those lengths of matches at the Crucible, not exactly rubbish. Let's face it if Hendry had done it in a best of 25 or best 33 the same people rubbishing anybody else doing 7 centuries in a match would have lauded Hendry for doing likewise. Yes indeed rightly so but rubbishing others also doing 7 in a best of 25 or 33 albeit st a slower rate thsn Hendry's 7 in a best of 19 is ridiculous. Best of 19 and best of 33 are different type of mstched require a different approach, not very often does somebody on peak form all 3 sessions to totallly romp all 3 of them in a best of 33 let alone also sustain the 7 centuries from a best of 19 from Hendry at the same rate the 12+ centuries scored by the same person in a best of 33. Maybe the 7 cnturies scored at slower rate rhan tte 1994 UK final in the best of 33 a player who make 3 or 4 centuries in the first session knows they've got much to do to get to 17 frames, but in a best of 19 after making 3 or 4 in the first session making just 1 more could almost win the whole match in first session. But even Hendry even at peak did not make 7 centuries in every best of 17 anf best of 19 he played, let alone match or exceed 7 centuries in every best of 25, best of 31, best of 33 and best of 35 he played. Even for him he didn't do 7 centuries in a multisession match very often, not nearly as often as people thought he did back in the day.

Wayne Holnes Tbf there were a lot less tournaments compared to nowadays so Hendry could have made near 1000 centuries

There have only been more tourneys for a few years, in the mid to late 00's there were less than in the 90's. Anyway, Ronnie has a far better century per frame ratio than Hendry. Ronnie makes a ton once every 11 frames, Hendry made one once every 15. Ronnie has played less matches and frames, yet he's almost 200 tons in front of Hendry.

@@michaeltrumph121, having more centuries dose not mean anything, and hendry hv retire 6 yrs! How can u still compare in these department? Did u know HENDRY is suffering from YIPS? That's why his game has decline since 2000 the desease that force him to retire in 2012. Not taking anything away from ronnie he is really a very gd player too. Hendry than ronnie. Anyway ronnie lost to ali this year. If u know wat I mean.
