Steve Jobs, the creator of Apple, a multi-trillion dollar company gave a speech before he died at Standford, he had this crazy piece of advice in the middle of the speech.
“"Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”
This quote really resonated with me, but its taken me 3 years to come to my current understanding around death.

Recently I had my first encounters with deaths in my family.
My uncle got hit by a car while walking down the road, and my grandmother passed of old age both in the last month.
Most people don’t like to talk about their own death or think about it at all. I think that’s stupid, and my generation is very guilty of this. We live through our childhood and 20’s like we are immortal. And it really feels like that, our bodies are at their peak recovery, everyone is having such a good time, we don’t see the results or consequences of our actions.
But time does pass, and all the good work or damage you’ve done will create who you are in a few years.
We aren’t immortal, we are very very mortal, and I’m grateful I learned this lesson early.
When I was in high school, I was obese, I weighed 265 pounds at my largest and my doctor was very worried about me, every year I came in for a check-up, he was trying to motivate me to lose weight, my blood pressure was bad, i have a family history of diabetes and cholesterol issues, my health was at risk due to the actions I took.
I remember lying in bed thinking to myself, I’m gonna die if I keep eating, i’m gonna die if I don’t exercise. I’m gonna die and not see my kids or meet my future wife
I’m gonna die because of my choices
It pissed me off, and it made me learn more about fitness, health, and nutrition.
I wouldn’t say it caused me to finally lose the weight, it was a combination of a lot of things through those years, but it really propelled me to begin the journey from self-destruction, to really feel my mortallity.
Think about your death, so you can be sure you’re living a life you don’t regret.
Think about how many days you have left to live.
Steve Jobs got cancer twice, and the first time, his doctors told him he had 3 months left to live.
There’s a website I linked below or you could google this that tells you based on your birthday how many days you have left to live as an estimate.
I calculated mine to be around 28,000 days if I live to 102
I’m 6’6 though and tall people usually die sooner so we’ll see about that.
But that number is so interesting to me.
Do you think that’s big or small, 28,000 days
I think its really really small, I hate how I can imagine that, like 365 days in a year, and I’ve seen years go by so fast.

Once you have your number, we can move onto the death journal and my biggest realization from my own journal.
Whenever you want to contemplate your death and practice this exercise, you can use a couple prompts.
The first one I recommend is
What would I do right now, if I died tomorrow?
I would write something so degenerate.
What would I do right now, If I died a week from now?
I would still be degenerate, like partying, drugs, alcohol, everything I can do to maximize pleasure in that time. Spending time with friends and if I’m being honest, less with my family. A tough truth I learned through this exercise.
What would I do right now, If I died a month from now, 3 months, 6 months.
1 year, 5 years, 20 years, 50 years, and 100 years.
Really push yourself to come up with your genuine answers to these questions. Not what you think makes sense, but genuinely what you would do given this amount of days left to live.
