I was in the studio recording my vocal of a song I had written when the bass player quipped, “you might want to change that lyric”. I had been singing the line “she wakes up and wipes her eyes on Sunset Boulevard”. On playback I realized it sounded like I was saying “wipe her arse on sunset boulevard”. Needless to say, I altered my phrasing on the next take.

A while back, I found a short interview of Luke, Hungate, and Paich when they were inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame, and they were joking about performing the "Kenny Nolan's greatest hits", sang a section of "But Love Me" and mentioned they ruined his life. I was always curious about the context behind that. Now that I do know, I can't stop laughing whenever I hear that Kenny Nolan song.

Steve is an unbelievably entertaining interview! I’m no expert but I’ve read that Toto would spend incredible amounts of money recording their albums and that’s reflected in the production values of those records; they sound flawless 🤩

Steve and Ed (EVH) must have had a lot of fun as a comedy double act. Did Steve ever hear the joke Eddie played on this interviewer J.D Considine when the band got tired of his questions about DLR in 1986 ? ….Ed goes to Considine - ‘Do you have a girlfriend’? …..He replied ‘No , I have a Wife’….So Ed continues -‘ Do you have any pictures of her’ ?…. The interviewer says -‘yes, I have pictures of her’…. So Edward with a mischievous tigers grin asked -‘Do you have any pictures of her NUDE’ ? ….Considine goes -‘NO I do NOT have any pictures of her NUDE’!….So Edward whispers to him conspiratorially-‘WANNA BUY SOME’ ? 😂😅😂😅😂

I thought the funniest story from the full interview was when Luke described what he said at a music college Q&A session: (to paraphrase) "…Flashy guitar technique is a bit like having a 20 inch cock. It’s great to show it off but there’s not many places to fit it."

As a long time member of the Sunday Night Baseball technical crew, it reminds me of a less scandalous but still funny thing that happened at the very last game every played at the old Veteran's Stadium in Philly (September 28, 2003). While most of the critical crew travel from game to game, a big show such as SNB hired local "Utilities" for pulling/coiling cables etc. - grunt workers in other words. They were typically students from some local community college who were taking courses in broadcasting. They also had near zero clue how large broadcast game setup worked - they were just supposed to do what they were told (which during a game was "sit and do nothing". Turns out, on Saturday night after we got all set up and before we went back to our hotels we always did a broadcast "fax" - a short facsimile of the broadcast. Every crew member (Producer/Director/TD/Cameras/Replay/etc.), were in their places. Camera shots were called (homers, double plays, etc.) and the crew chased and recorded and replayed imaginary players and balls. This was done of course to just make sure every piece of equipment was working properly and there were no stadium pillars, etc. in any of the shots. During this Fax, the Utilities were unsupervised because all the crew were in their places. They were generally just told to hang out by the snack table (next to the production truck under the stands) and wait for the crew to return. During that Fax, one of the kids strolled out the tunnel and looked out at the field. Being midnight, the grounds crew has all gone home and the field is fully lit, but empty. He looks furtively looks both directions. Seeing no one, he quickly runs out to home plate and then pretending to hit a home run he bounds around the bases and belly slides into home plate -- complete with standing up -- his arms in the air in victory and soaking on the imaginary crowd cheering his walk off. Of course what he doesn't realized is that about 12 cameras were following his every move with and equal number of replay machines rolling. The production truck is rocking with laughter as they splice together the perfect views for the replay. The kid returns to the snack table and someone opens the door and says "Hey kid ... did you just run the bases?". He denies it of course so they just say "Hop on up here in the truck" where they punch up the replay. He's fired on the spot of course, but if you ask me ... for a kid who was probably a raging Philly's fan ... to hit the last "home run" in Veteran's Stadium history was likely worth it ... he was getting paid like $50 for the night after all. My recollection was one of the tape guys snuck him digital copy of the tape because we all thought it was a cool happening.

Reminds me of that scene in the original M*A*S*H movie where Robert Duvall and Sally Kellerman are going at it and Gary Burghoff puts a microphone under Kellerman’s cot. The principals are all listening to the action in the radio room when the priest walks in-and thinks they’re tuned into one of his favorite radio programs-and then beats a hasty retreat. Then they blast it over the PA speakers-and _finally_ the two realize that their tryst isn’t private.

Funny, I was just thinking about the "But Love Me" story the other day, trying to remember the name of the artist. (Kenny somebody... Nolan, I think?) Hilarious, though I can't imagine being paid to record someone's album and doing that. I guess they felt they could and that it wouldn't ruin *their* careers. They were all beyond untouchable by that point. Great story, just the same.
