In this video we check out some various components to MCI's (C-Rations) made just after the end of the Vietnam War. We check out old cakes, crackers, jam, cocoa, coffee, and more! Hope you like the video! We have the rest of those frozen MRE's and even more in the process of editing - this is just a "Hold ya over" video. Have fun! :-)

I’m a disabled former Marine. I watch these videos constantly. For losing weight😂. Whenever I’m hungry, I watch a few of these first and bam, appetite killed for hours. I’ve lost 15 pounds in the past two weeks. No lie. I gotta say dude, you’re my hero eating this shit. Good grief. “Yeah, that taste like dirt. Oh no, I shouldn’t have done that”, that wasn’t cool at all!” Straight up bad ass man. 🙏🙏🙏

You didn't open the open the b-1 unit that contained the 2 chocolate style discs. We used to call them "shit discs". They were a weapon in their own right. We used to throw them at each other and they were some how aerodynamic. You could be pretty accurate throwing them with a good amount of force. I threw one at a buddy of mind, aiming at his helmet but it was low and hit him in the eye. It gave him a nice shiner.

I was fortunate as a kid to have had the opportunity to have eaten most of these at one time or another. I used to love the B units as a kid for some reason. I can remember eating the fudge and thinking it was delicious. I also remember enjoying the peanut butter and blackberry jam cans. Of course I drank my share of old cocoa beverage powder packs. I wish we could get a company to accurately remanufacture these old c rations!

Isn't it funny how peanut butter never seems to go bad? it's a shame the ancient Egyptians didn't preserve their royalty by slathering them in peanut butter. Then they could have rolled them in a delicious crushed peanut coating. Umm, So good.

I was in the Army from 1982 to 1985. We ate C- ration, packaged 1977-79, until 1984 then MREs in 85. The first MRE's sucked bad. Thanks for the video, brought back some fond times

Yeah, opening those green C-rat cans reminded me of drills with the VA Nat'l Guard in the 1980s. While the 1970s-era products we ate weren't rancid then, boy, they certainly weren't as good as modern MREs. The pound and nut cakes were generally sugar and flavored flour. We usually tossed them out, too, and went back for the hot meals from the mess kitchens.

When I went to basic in 1983 we had C rations out in the field. My guess is they were using up the last of them. When I got to my first duty station we had the MRE's. Still got the p-38 from 1983 on my key ring.

I tend to prefer a p-51 because you can use the weight of your keys for a bit of a pendulum assist. The down side is the blade tends to flip open and catch on things. On the other hand a p-38 will stay closed but you then have to either take it off of your keys or palm them while using it.

These tasted a lot better closer to their sell by date. I remember getting a bunch of the C rations from something called Railroad salvage, which was a MoPac run RailRoad Salvage store that sold old things that had been for sale from other factions of the Market, Or maybe my dad got them from the base, I am not sure which. It was during the 70's and early 80's that he would open the boxes up and start telling us about his war years in the Korean Vietnam and following years of military rations. I even had cases and cases of the MRE's from the Late 80's and early 90's I love the Chocolate cover cookie bars. The freeze dried fruit packages were cool too. Love your channel just found it today. I'd be there eating the stuff with you if I could. Thanks for doing it.

Sorbitol is what was used (maybe it still is) in dietetic candies in the 70's and 80's. It is notorious for causing explosive diarrhea. So if that happens it probably is not because of the age of the product, but this ingredient.

We had these C-Rats in the late 70's. Given the choice of C-Rats or Pizza, definitely Pizza! But they gave nutrition (2000 Calories?) for soldiers in the field, plus you could always trade with your buddies if you ended up with a meal you didn't like. I never did try the MRE's but they don't sound too bad to me.

The plant where the poundcake was made still exists in Nashville. It's a car museum now. It has a room showing the history of the bread plant, including one of the poundcakes. BTW, "spat" is the correct past tense of "spit". Very few people use it any more, so it sounds odd.

Jelly does not go bad for quite a long time if it is well-preserved as it is just sugar and fruit. Sorbitol is a known laxative. Most people that eat it are fine, but that stuff can give you the serious shits. Funny enough, it is still in a lot of commercial gum today (at least in the US.)

I've got a recent food horror story to kill all your appetites stone dead: I was making spaghetti, and had opened a box of noodles I had for a while. It was sealed up, but somehow bugs still got into it. There were bits of gnats in the water, and little maggots (I guess) in the unused noodles I pulled from the box. Needless to say everything went straight in the can and I went and bought some new noodles.

US Army Inf. 77-81, I've had plenty of C-rats. It all depended on what you could heat up. I was stationed in a Mechanized Unit in Germany and there were plenty times you couldn't heat them up. the beans, beef, and eggs were horrible then. but if you were lucky enough to have afunctioning heater on your PC the exhuast from those things would heat it up pretty quick. All you'd need were the glove you used to change the .50 cal barrel. we used to throw tha chocolate bars to the little kids at the train station when we railheaded, maybe save up a bunch and trade...good memories!

Oh yeah, invert sugar is basically a mixture of sugar and water that's either been slowly heated for a long period of time or (more likely) heated together with a catalyst, which is generally an acid. The resulting syrup is a mix of glucose and fructose, which is easier for the body to process into ATP than raw sugar and is also supposed to taste sweeter. I'm more worried about the three (more?) sorbitol derivatives and the antifreeze =p
