SPOILERS AHEAD I really recommend reading the novel. It especially explains the lab and the professor and why some of the cats are looking so mangled wayyy better. Same with why Francis immediately knows that the connection is sex. Cats go into heat and apparently they can also smell it on each other. So Francis concludes that both male cats were in heat and killed by a rival. Also, the novel explains that the electrocuted cats don't die, they just suffer in the name of Claudandus who suffered before them. The cat Francis mated with is later said to have been sent my Pascal. It is definitely more obvious in the novel because Francis makes the connection that the female seems much more feral. She does tell him in the scene that her breed is "old" or "new and old". This is important, because it's the reason for all the murders - committed by none other than Pascal - who is trying to breed cats back to their more feral form so they could overthrow humans. In the novel, he also has another dream connected to this. That is why he killed the males who tried to mate with his feral females and killed the non-feral females carrying the kittens of feral males (like Solitaire, Kong's mate, who's kittens were not his but those of a feral male). Aaaaand it's also supposed to get gradually more terrifying the more things Francis discovers. It starts with a "simple" murder over rivalry but it turns out to be SO much worse. The books are just as gruesome as the movie but I really enjoyed reading them and I think that the movie is a very good adaptation all in all. Despite there being some differences.

@Death Omen there's no magic and he has no self-healing the special thing about him was that he's the only cat the wound adhesive worked on, he doesn't exactly have any of that stuff with him and without it he's just like any other old cat, maybe even with even weaker skin due to scarring (or perhaps even a medical condition that allowed the adhesive to work in the first place, but that goes too deep into theorizing) also if those claws catch the skin right they can rip straight through in one go, yeah it's a little over the top with all of Claudandus' guts spilling out immediately, but a single really good deep slash like that should be enough to at least expose his guts a little

She was one of the new breed Claudandus was creating via his "natural selection" of weeding out the undesirable genes. He later admits that he wants Francis to continue his work. So yeah, she was likely sent to him by Claudandus as a sort of seduction/offering, and to also promote the line of pure breed cats.

It's possible that the reason Claudandus was so easily (ugh) disemboweled by Francis is because his stomach wall was weakened from all the times it was cut open and stitched back up. But he has some of the best final lines ever said as he dies: "Look at me now, Francis, and all you see is evil. Yet once, I was good..."

Claudandus was turned into what he was, and his idea of the "cat army", of the "perfect breed", of "cleansing the inferior genes" portray him as a cat with a strong ideology blind to its own limits and weaknesses; which, I believe, works very well for his character overall.

shame...well, even if I disagree on a few points (like the mating scene, which is both reflective of Francis still being a cat, thus his desire to mate overtakes him, and of how Claudandus is planning to remove the lower breeds/make Francis his protege onto whom passing his torch), I liked this review of yours. Felidae is a very interesting look on ideologies and cults, how people (and in this case even cats) can end up in their snares and do atrocities in the name of a "greater good". Claudandus probably is the most honest of all the "victims", since he recognizes the evil he had done, but also that part of it came from the evil which befell onto him as a test subject of a scientist.

Unless the cat has skin fragility syndrome, grooming isn't that dangerous. Normal cat skin is nearly the same thickness as human skin. You certainly don't tear open when you brush your hair. Also, I think people are overestimating how sharp cat claws are. Yes, they're sharp. But in reality they're not going to get through the thick abdominal walls to disembowel another cat. If they were that sharp then you would be missing chunks of skin every time your cat scratched you. Plus, the claws aren't used that way either in a hunt. They're used to hold onto prey while they bite to do the killing blow.

I think it's bad translation. I haven't watched it in in English. In the German the dialogues are really good. It's clear early on that Francis smells a lot and his instincts gives him strange feelings, but he often dismisses it. The old laboratory, the experimentalist and the lingering smell of the dead animals. Many important details are put in as minor things in his inner dialogue or dialogue with others. In his dreams all this get mixed up confused. Only in the end he can put it all together. EDIT: The Translation must really suck. It's clear that Claudandus is the only cat that reacts to the serum as expected. He does not have a "healing factor" but a mutation that makes him immune to the acid like side effect of the serum. The Scientist then tried to find the genetic reason why the serum only works on that cat. He looses his funding and went mad over it. In the end Claudandus escapes and kills the scientist. In the end he is mentally detached from reality. He thinks because he could kill a human all cat's are superior to humans in every aspect. He also thinks Humans are "the real animals" only pretending to be civilized and the cats are "the real humans". Also. Claudandus has cancer and would die soon. EDIT2: It's a German production, so the original Language is German not Dutch. :-) I also have the impression the film was recut for international viewing. Maybe the German original with subtitles could clear up some of the plot holes.

And famous masterpieces of Schiller, Goethe, Kafka, etc. What should make the learning process easier is, that you could use some English words (both languages are germanic and were influenced by French and Latin) and that many German words are constructions of other words, so it is easier to recognise them and guess the meaning, and that the verbs are not so horrible like in French. At first the 3 articles der, die and das should be shocking for you, but with the time you get a feeling for it, the noms were written with a capital letter(like a name) and the grammar is a bit tricky, which you should know, but it is possible.

I highly recommend the book series, I just hope the English versions are well translated as me, being German, got to read them in the language they were written in. If you read the book series you will understand the movie a lot better. Francis is the main character in all the books and it's always crime solving. Some books get more gruesome than the most disturbing parts in the movie. But there's always a good balance of humour and horror and I enjoy how they can turn a peaceful and beautiful scene into something horrifying or vice versa. The only thing I thought was awkward was the cat mating scenes, I would just skim through them. But anything else was just a great intense read. Kind of sad the reviewer missed out a lot of hints or misunderstood many scenes, maybe he should read the first book and then review it, it would clear a lot of things up. Sometimes the throughout descriptions in books are better than the shortened movie versions. For example, his use of the sense of smell, just came across as weird here.

"no cat has skin this thin and brittle" dude one of my cats literally ripped part of her belly open on a fence one night. she spent the nights outdoors and when we looked for her the next morning she had almost died from the wound. not as bad as when she got back home with a broken hip from a car crash, but still terrifying. (she died a peaceful death of old age (20ish), many many years later, while I held her in my arms. so don't worry.)

Aleksander Klaas Beats me. I'm just glad she did. She crawled all the way onto the porch, where we found her the next morning (if I remember correctly - I was very young. Might be getting that bit confused with what imagined from rehearing the story so often). There was a semi-busy street close to our home and I guess the vet concluded that she had been in a car crash. Noone can tell how exactly she was hit obviously, she was alone out at night.

Okay, I get that the plot isn't perfect, but some points you mentioned aren't as flaky as you think: 1) Kong admitted to the murders to try to intimidate Francis, because he thought of him as competition 2) Francis didn't think about the danger because the heat of the female cat makes instincts take over. 3) the female cat was sent to him to breed ( at least that's what I remember ) 4) she tells him her breed is both old and new, which causes him to do research 5) you never mentioned the scenes with Jesiah? He explained a bunch too iirc 6) while Francis's dreams may seem prophetic, I believe he picked up a bunch of stuff unconsciously 7) Pascal was old and sick and Francis hit him in the absolute weakest spot. Cat claws are incredibly sharp. 8) Pascal was crazy, and a CAT, they're known for their aspirations to world domination 9) the original dub is German, not Dutch.

Another thing to add: Pascal was not turned into some super mutant with healing abilities. He was just lucky enough to be compatible with the flesh glue they tried to develop and thus didnt die during the experiments. He was basically just a regular old cat when they fought.

I still don’t like Kong admitting to the murders. He’s built like a Pitt bull, at least 3 times the size of any other cat and has been seen gleefully sacrificing other cats... why would he need to falsely admit to murders to intimidate? Feels a little messy. Either make Kong not a absolute unit of a cat, or establish him to be more suspicious earlier in the movie.

Actually, with the scene where the cats stomach is ripped open; the stomach skin is very frail and easy to tear compared to the rest of its body. So, during fights cats commonly protect their belly. He might have murdered some of the cats to get at Francis or ones for other reasons (like Felicity, who is a different breed from the other murdered cats), and his mate must have also been the same breed as the cats being killed, which is why she was killed.

A few things... Kong lied about doing the killings likely as an intimidation tactic against Francis, thus making him a temporary red herring to the audience. Not a plot twist. Francis having sex with the strange cat DOES tie into the plot. It's mentioned that he wasn't murdered because he was a "suitable mate" for the pure cat species sometime after that point. Also, knowing cat mating behaviours makes the sex scene a little less weird as mentioned by some of the other commenters. There are also some other things I feel you misinterpreted in this movie, but the comment section has done a better job at pointing those out, so I won't harp on about it any further. Good review nonetheless.

I don't think I've watched the English dub yet (I'm German so I've watched it in the original dub) so I don't know if maybe some information was just lost in translation or not, but a couple of things you mentioned as unexplained or plotholes/bad writing I remember as being explained or at least hinted at like Kong's overly exaggerated design, it's explained that the majority of cats in the neighborhood are actually greatly disfigured or handicapped due to either themselves or their parents having been subjected to the animal experiments in that lab (this also includes Bluebeard's eye and paw, Felicity's eyes, and pretty much everything about the guardian of the tomb), yeah it's never directly addressed that Kong's large body is also an effect of this, but it's a logical conclusion to draw Francis' intelligence is only hinted at, but with the way that it was hinted at throughout the beginning I always figured he must've read through his owner's books before, already having read all about genetics, ancient egypt and felidae races at some point in the past The dreams didn't give him information, they just presented something to his conscious that his subconscious had already picked up on (something that dreams are kinda supposed to do) the creepy Doctor because he'd already picked up a smell of doctors/medicine in the place they moved into Mendel talking about plant hybrid experiments because he saw the portrait of Mendel in Pascal's home (and him probably already having read that genetics book before, thus knowing who Mendel was)

I feel that there are some things, that just get lost in translation. I watched it in german. Claudandus is actually telling Francis that he as a tumor and is going to die soon, so he is definitely weakened by this. During the fight scene Francis is bringing up the point that "Not all humans are bad", to wich Claudandus claims "They are all the same". So it's this kind of blind hatred towards a group of people that isn't really unknown. As he dies he sais "I have become evil francis... I have once been good", indicating that it was the humans that made I'm who he is. As for the sex szene: I remember Claudandus actually admitting (or Francis figuring it out in the conversation), that he should be part of the breeding program, due to his intelligence. And in the one dream sequence we see all the "breeders", like kong, strange cat lady and the cult leader. They where all some kind of descendants of claudandus, having attributes like hardy, wild, independent and strong. Intelligence would just fit the concept. Maybe it's just because I am german, and our background kinda gives it away, but this felt weirdly like the "Arian breeding program", by the Nazis during WW2. Claudandus was sorting out "unpure blood" and just allowing the cats to breed that would serve his course. This is maybe a bit far fetched but really makes me chill in the German translation. And well of course I watched the film for the first time when I was like 5-6. My mother would record kids movies on VHS that where shown on televsion. Setting the recorder to the time it would start and then record it, without having to watch it through. Well she showed us the video because she thought "how nice an animated cats movie". Nope... She walked in on the "Mendel-Puppetier"-Scene when she realized it was not a kids mobile after all. Interestingly enough it didn't traumatize me, but actually left a gruesome interest in the macabre. I was delighted when I found this film again as adult. Yeah the plot really lacks, but the animation alone, as well as the German voices are well worth it. It's still hilarious that the character "Hezaja", was displayed by the German singer and comedian "Helge Schneider". Look up what he normally does XD

You need to watch the movie again dude. You missed a TON of important clues. One major one was the sex scene. There didn’t need to be reference to it again. It was all it needed to be. She dropped a bomb after their tryst. That was a major linchpin to him figuring it out. Each encounter gave Francis an important clue. Even the escalation in violence in the murders were part of the way he figured out what was going on. Those dead kittens paralleled the drunk scientist’s monologue. You just had to listen carefully. Thanks for the tip off to the movie though, it was great. I’d definitely class it as a crime fiction, but it discusses many contemporary ethical problems and philosophical questions, such as the relationship between mankind and animals and the idea of superior races within species. Pretty well executed considering the book is well over 200 pages and they managed to cram it into 1:13 run time.

The film was originally in German, not Dutch XD and I get the feeling that there might be scenes missing or information got lost in translation. I also wonder if you ever had a cat yourself, as some behavior in the movie can be explained just with ‚typical cat behavior‘ like banging a cat in heat at first site.. you have to consider that only ‚genetically inferior‘ cats were murdered, so I guess our protagonist wasn’t deemed inferior, possibly even superior, as Claudandus eventually let’s him in on the secret. Kong seems to me, like he could be a really big Maine Coon, they can get ridiculously huge and even appear bigger due to their long and thick fur, which can appear as a mane.

The reason Clawdandus tore open like tissue paper, as you say, was because he was super old as far as cats go, which meant that he actually _was_ that brittle. The reason Clawdandus didn't regenerate is the same reason taking a couple asprin won't prevent you from getting any headaches for the rest of your life. The substance used on him was basically one-use-only, and didn't actually give him any long-term regenerative powers.

I agree, this movie is a bit all over the place with the plot, but there are some details that you left out. The dream with the doctor was a result of Francis discovering the left over of a name plate outside, and catching a scent of the chemicals when he first entered. And Kong's laugh clip from the scene you picked was purely sarcastic, in contex. I also believe (a bit jumping here, but has a little evidence) Kong is a mutation, seeing how he somewhat resembles the lady-cat Francis mates later. The connection with the first two murders is a slashed throat, and francis (as said less than a minute later in the movie) said that it was a powerful male who had killed both, which is logical amongst wild cat behavior. (Side note: Felicity was killed because she was a potential mate for Francis). Francis' next dream is actually rather realistic, seeing as dreams take things that happened (or sometimes will happen) and twist them. The priest in his nightmare is in a painting at Pascal's house, and I do believe is known for genetic discoveries/breedings. Solitare (Kong's mate) was killed due to carrying a litter of "Inferior species" kittens. Kong originally admitted to being the kiiler just so he could scare Francis and make himself look powerful. Francis mating with that cat is actually quite important from a plot standpoint. You see, (as stated later) Francis has Felidae in him, which will help bring back the true Felidae species. This also is the reason for all the murders. The mad doctor's ideas of making a pure and powerful species rubbed off on "Pascal" (aka Cloudandus), who plotted with joker to make this new secies. Pascal ran the background, doing the intelegant research, while joker spreads the message of cloudandus, brain washing those who don't have enough Felidae in them to reproduce better kits to go into the electric charge. I understand how you came to the conclusion of "No real explanation" seeing as missing one small detail could throw the plot off. Sorry for the long (and rather choppy) read, I am a personal fan of this movie and couldn't help seeing some small errors.

I feel that Kong /admitted/ to the killings mostly because he wanted to look like a big, strong thug that was worthy of fear and respect as Francis' dismissive behavior nettled him. As for Francis getting away with mating the strange cat, if my memory serves correctly (spoilers?): It's because Claudandus /allowed/ it. In wanting the bloodlines to be the "superior" original blood, he also wanted to add some new blood into the gene pool to prevent too much inbreeding but also because he had a soft spot for Francis, recognizing the younger cat's intelligence and reminding him of himself. It also "sweetened the deal" in attempting to get Francis to join him. Francis would have gotten more of the exotic ladies. You might not have either watched the film all the way through, or quite possibly remembered it correctly. But hey, it happens for one reason or another and cannot be blamed. Unless of course, this is me playing detective. And I think it's safer to say that all the odd jumps in logic are more or less based on science that wasn't properly explained whatsoever in the video, assuming the viewer knew much about it. For instance, the suicidal cats were killing themselves because it was a superstitious religion Claudandus instilled in the population of local cats to thin the ones that were most gullible, thus not having to lift a single claw for it. As for why Francis ignored his logic to mate, it's /primal animal instinct./ When an animal comes across something that awakens their natural instincts, /everything is thrown out the window to survive./ For instance, you can try to make yourself appear not threatening to a wild animal as you try to get it out of a net and show you're trying to help it, but it's instinct is making it struggle against you in absolute terror and thus perhaps worsening the situation. In this case, it was the survival by reproducing: scent of a "queen" or unspayed female, which has the overpowering ability to attract mates and drive them into a rut where they will fight- sometimes to the death- to be with the female. Mating is a very, very powerful call and will cause animals more or less to go mad and often changes behavior drastically when an animal is in "season". Also, as a tip: You might want to put extreme blood/gore warnings of your personal rating of the footage in the beginning of some of your videos for people who stumble across your feed. It might look like a cool cartoon they'd want to get into and nope out of the video, left scarred. Particularly with this one lol

I want to say something for the stomach gut thing. Cats actually do have soft bullies, meaning that the skin where the belly is, is pretty weak. Thats why hes able to simply cut open the other cat just like that. Other cat books and some deaths actaully had simliar situations, a a example is warrior cats where Scourge(a tiny black cat.) was easliy able to cut another cat named tigerstar open,since he had an uperhand for that. So cutting bellys open might be a common trend when it comes to bloody cat books,so that might be why the open belly scene was like that.

That scene always creeped me the fuck out. The way it's drawn out and the way they scream and writhe like it hurts them, the weird horror-movie kind of music building up in the background, and ESPECIALLY the way the female cat talked to Francis afterwards. She's vaguely cruel and insulting to him, and her voice just sounds "evil". It's hard to explain, you just have to hear it yourself to understand, but she seriously talks and acts like there is some dark fucked up shit going on in her mind. It's way more disturbing than the nightmare sequence, and that's a feat.

So, I wanted to point out a few things in the movie that remedies some of the negatives you had not because I think its all that great a film or because I want to argue, but because it disproves your negatives. I could follow francis's train of thought honestly. It's not logical to follow the messages of your dreams nor scientific, but I've certainly had dreams that predicted the future before and I've had dreams that dropped hints about things I was having problems solving. Also, clawdandus was never super powered with healing abilities. The reason he was getting sloppy was on purpose to get Francis to take up the charge he was so desperate to lead but couldn't because he had developed cancer. And it makes sense that Francis would know something of Egyptian culture since his "can opener" - or human guardian - studied Egyptian architecture and Francis even states that he read them a time or two. I like the review and it is a good one of the film itself since I'm just finishing it up myself, but I just wanted to point out the flaws in the negatives you had as someone who appreciates noticing the details

The book explains some bits of confusion in the movie itself. Did you see the part with that mutated cat that collected the dead cat bodies? He kinda explains Claudandus' (i most likely spelled it wrong) motives but he is very sage/seer/monk like with his theory and it's very fluid-y and philosophical. The book explains it more in detail... And is far more graphic and gruesome. The filmmaker made the movie less of a horror fest than what it was originally written. I like the movie lol the book was a little too much lmfao

It was so Cloudandus could give Francis a taste of what he was doing, so Francis would be his heir. I haven't watched the movie in a month or two so maybe it's not mentioned in the movie? I know it's plainly said in the book. edit two: Cloudandus cannot heal himself. It was the serum that did it, he was just the lucky cat who got the right mixture of serum. It was never mentioned that he could heal himself, and in fact I think it's said that the serum worked on other cats. His final wound that killed him was actually a re-opening of a wound he got from the lab, that's why Francis could rip him open, because it wasn't healthy skin, it was scarred skin. Edit three: I think Cloudandus talking over Francis was intentional, kind of like a "yes yes yes you've got it now let me speak"

Years ago (11 years ago+), I uploaded the movie here on KZbin in multiple parts since KZbin didn’t allow videos >10min in those times. I uploaded it since I remembered watching the movie back when I was like 11 because my dad thought it was Aristocats. Let’s just say it’s obvious it left an impact on me. So I really wanted to find it again when I grew up, to prove that I didn’t have a fever dream of it existing. Anyway, you really don’t enough about cats do you? Sex pheromones on cats is quite strong, and can be scented by other cats. You know, like musk. Also, Pascal/Claudandus mentions he ‘sent those dreams’ to Francis. How? No idea. Claudandus’ power isn’t healing naturally, it’s his reaction to the serum that made him a mutant and allowed him to heal. Also, this movie was German, not Dutch I believe. I’m surprised you did not touch on the Holocaust imagery or the eugenics ideal of Claudandus (tho he’s less Hitler and more like a psycho made from the trauma of his torture. Think Magneto from Days of Future Past being warped into a mutant supremacist). The Mau cat having sex with Francis was also mentioned by Pascal. He sent her there, because he decided that Francis can be part of his genetic program plus he needs him on his side to take over his work as Claudandus was old and had cancer. Claudandus also believed the army of cats could work because he was able to disembowel the scientist but jumping and crawling into his mouth and ripping him up from the inside (think that’s a book detail). There’s also a scene showing the cemetery of cats with hundreds of dead cats and many of them increasing in frequency over the years as the breeding program continued. That’s why Francis realised the whole point is breeding and culling.

The whole atmosphere and situation which was "caused" by Pascal/Claudandus and the guy who made the experiments

A big, self-absorbed, typical bully type who will stop at nothing to take all the credit he can and to constantly shock everyone around him, rivals included. Also: Claudandus isn't basically Kitty-Wolverine, he just didn't die to the fibrin glue prototype.
