everyone knew he was great then....but over thirty years later with all the guitarist that has came since his passing, many good but none better technically and none with the passion. Due to age and going into the military I never saw him live but being from Austin, I was very familiar with him long before he went "national" and was considered a "local boy" here although originally from Dallas. I'm just sad I didn't appreciate the greatness to the extent I should have when he was here and sad he didn't have an opportunity to continue his life and music... still none better....

Relax, in every genre of music and technology, etc., someone came before--Ford came before Ferrari, just as an example--not that Jimi was a Ford, but you get my drift.
@bringo4392
@bringo4392 4 жыл бұрын
roberta fioretti I agree. But the point is that Ferrari had to learn from ford. Srv learned from the greats... listen to his playing he is heavily inspired by Albert King imo... you can honestly hear a little bit of all the black blues players simply because the genre was created by us. So naturally you pick up the habits and develop your own along the way, so I agree with you that somebody came before everybody but that’s just the point there was a before and that has to be respected.

In fact when he wanted to play with Albert King and record it his label went crazy and almost booted him. They did not want the public to know his songs were other people's songs. My brother met Stevie a long time ago and was shocked by how small he was. He said he couldn't have been taller than 5'4". He said at first he thought he was a circus performer and then this buzz went through his spine when he realized who it was. You never expect famous people to be short. Just like Prince who was 5'2". These small guys who were just utter giants in music.

Fallacy. He may have seemed small, but all his documents, including arrests (sure the police got it right) say he was actually 5'9. Tommy was asked and said he was 5'9 and Tommy is reportedly around 6'5 or so. Reese is reported to be 6'7. Chris is a little taller than Stevie.

Every time I come back and look at this material, I love it again, as we did when we shot this at the Capitol. It was a labor of love then, too, because once you met Stevie Ray, you could never forget him. Removing the front row of seats so we could have a dolly.... and adding smoke so the lights would pop... and struggling with Ike HL-79 cameras, even though state of the art in small cams at the time.... remember, there was no HDTV back then, but I recorded this on 1" Type C, the best you could do in the 80s. That's why it holds up so well ~37 years later.

I thought he was one of the best - if not THE best - guitarist in the world. I was stunned when he died! He made playing the guitar look effortless! BTW - I saw keyboardist Reese Wynans play with Joe Bonamassa's band in Buffalo a few months back. HE'S still playin' great!

IMO he was one of the top 3 of all time. My personal favorite. This performance, and the entire Capital concert, was one of his greatest total performances IMO. The outrageous chord at 0:36 blows me away every time. Most of the crowd was really ecstatic and appreciative, except for a few in row 1 who were either stunned out of their gourds at what they were hearing, or just plain out of it.

Its not even a chord, which is the craziest part! Its insane the pure ability and range of sound Stevie had at the touch of his fingertips, that section at 0:36 is just a single note being bent, but Stevie's great finger strengths allowed him to bend multiple strings at the same time. So in essence in just on really big string bend, but the way he bends and releases is beautiful, and second nature he's not even thinking about it...

Was this around the time he became ill and stopped drinking? He's the master; sobriety made him even better, and I'm so glad he had those last few happy years. RIP Stevie, your heart plays on.

32 seconds in. His necklace gets in the way, he moves it and then grinds on those strings. Makes a face to match the sound. Love love love that part.
