The thing on the ship that Blackthorne calls the 'rudders' are basically the ship's log, a recording of when and how much they turned the ship. It's a way of tracking where the ship traveled in the ocean. They also can include records of what they did at locations. If that got revealed that could endanger the crew.

I hear you about the subtitles, but I actually appreciate the subtitles. Sometimes I may miss something that was said and when I initially watch something. With the subtitles, it improves my comprehension of the scene and I don't miss what was said.

John Blackthorn is a British pirate and a Protestant. The Dutch, his crew, were also Protestants. Protestants HATE Catholics. Ok, so the Portuguese are the only ones who figured out how to get to Japan. No one else in Europe knew the path. John got his hands on a Portuguese pilot (navigator)’s notebook and took this team of guys to find Japan. The mission - destroy any ports with Catholic/Portuguese presence, get to Japan, and establish a trade relationship. The Japanese have been trading with the Portuguese for a long time, hence why some of their people have converted to Catholicism. But, they are unaware that other countries to the west exist besides Portugal. John showing up is proof there are other nationalities the Japanese weren’t told about. This is a limited series, so it shouldn’t be a huge commitment. The book is fire. This show is going to have a lot of Vikings/GOT vibes.

Blackthorn isn't a pirate, an outlaw. He has Letters of Marque from Holland onboard saying he is a lawful combatant fighting for Protestant Christian Holland against the Catholic Spanish and Portuguese- Holland was in the middle of throwing off Spanish rule. The Portuguese don't wish to recognize the Letters because 1) it would signal to the Japanese they don't run everything back in Europe and 2) it would admit Holland is a lawful independent government instead of a rebel government revolting against Spanish rule.

Lord Yoshi Toranaga is the powerful Busho who has enemies on the Council of Regents that are plotting his demise because of his rise to power and influence. Taiko favored Toranaga over the other Regents and they are jealous of him. Ishido Kazunari was the main dude talking smack on the Council of Regents who wants to take Toranaga down. Ochiba No Kata was the wife of Taiko who was the ruler of Japan and is the mother of the Heir that is in Toranaga’s custody or care. BTW, the pilot's name is Vasco Rodrigues. The uncle's name is Kashigi Yabuashige, and the nephew's name is Kashigi Omi. Omi is and intelligent and diplomatic in many ways and understands what his uncle likes and uses his knowledge to his advantage. General Toda Hiromatsu is the old guy that came to claim the cargo from Blackthorne's ship to give to Lord Yoshi Toranaga. Usami Fuji is the granddaughter of Hiromatsu, she is the mother who was going to lose her child because of the dumbass husband that talked shit to the Council of Regents. Mariko was the woman that consoled Fuji when she held the knife to her throat threatening to kill herself and her baby. They killed the bay off-screen anyway. Kiku was the young lady that got freaky in front of Yabushige.
