The Portuguese did not do what they did to protect Japan. They kept the location of Japan quiet to continue to profit from their trade monopoly. The route to Japan lay through the Strait of Magellen, and the Portuguese kept this quiet until the Dutch managed to find someone who was willing to sell the secret to them. The Dutch wanted a piece of the action, which would normally result in conflict, and it was made worse because in Europe, the Protestants and Catholics were at war. Thus the Japanese Catholics viewed Blackthorne and his crew as enemies. *Hint* pay attention to the relationship between the Japanese Catholics and non Catholics. Its important to the story.

Thank you, I realize the Portugese didn't have Japan's best interest at heart, I was being facetious. But yes, I definitely understand how the religious war (and greed) are playing their parts in this power struggle in Japan

Be careful not to romanticise and fetishize the Japanese, in your accurate condemnations of the Europeans at the time. Much as they clearly had a very sophisticated culture, the Japanese were equally brutal and cruel in varying circumstances.

I'm aware of Japan's history. Like pretty much any civilization that's old, there's a dark side. But in the context of this show, we're looking at it from the Japanese perspective so that's where my viewpoints are coming from. If this was a show about Korea POV and the Japanese were the colonizers, I would be critiquing them just the same 😁

​@AishaWilson no you wouldn't and you already know this :) also, you are not viewing this "from the japanese pov" giving that the main character is john, and as long as john cares, he simply doesn't wasn't the portuguese to grow in power. Don't let your 2024 morals cloud your understanding of the show or history in general. It's kind of pathetic to hold a grudge over some nations that LOGICALLY wanted power in the post medieval era. A post medieval era where it was normal in some parts of the world to burn people at the stake, sacrifice children, and many others, so let's not play the casual card "oh, big powerful nation bad" that people nowadays want to use when talking about history hundreds of years ago.

that haircut's purpose is actually to keep the head cool when wearing crowns or kabutos (a samurai helmet) and one thing to note is when they're speaking english they're actually speaking portuguese we just hear it in english.

@@アキコ2003 he was literally the first english man to reach japan and the show hints at this multiple times that they're speaking portuguese such as at the beginning where he said he speaks "a little" portuguese and the old christian who was asked if he speaks portuguese and so on.

What do you mean by Europeans of this age? Those are extraordinarily bold words to describe an entire continent of hundreds of different languages and cultures... Im assuming you have absolutely no idea of the foreign empires that have been invading and enslaving Europeans for over a thousand years, because nobody will teach you that in school. Not to mention the ongoing wars in Europe against the Ottoman Empire during this exact time period of the Shogun series.

Totally ignoring the English starting a global war against slavery because their great thinkers made it law in the empire that the trade of human lives was illegal. The English are the one people who can hold their heads high when talking about why slavery was all but eradicated

Hiroyuki Sanada (this actor you like :) ) was a big star in Japan long before he appeared in Western productions. He was also a producer for "Shogun" and one of his main goals was to keep the historical accuracy of the era and present Japanese culture as it really was, not as is often depicted in Western movies.

Omg I am so happy you are starting this series! 2 main reasons: 1 - I love your channel and your reactions but most of what you watch I don't watch so I only get to hang out here during Wheel of Time. 2 - I fxcking LOVE Shogun. It's one of my favorite books of all time and I even own the original miniseries from the 80s on DVD and I was so excited to see this remake coming, BUT I am currently boycotting Disney/Hulu because of the 🍉 situation so I was afraid I wouldn't get to see if it is actually good. But if you're watching it, I can seeeeeee!

Since speaking of colonialism and the term "colonizer", have you ever heard about the indigenous Aino people in Japan and the Japanese colonisation of Hokkaido island? Did you know they still are oppressed? Did you know that the Japanese colonised Japan around 700 BC, replacing the indigenous populations on the mainland? Did you know that shortly before the time this show is set, Japan invaded Korea not only once but twice with goal of subduing it and China? A goal they never gave up with time, leading up to the invasion of China and Korea during ww2 and all the war crimes and attrocities that followed? Point is, you seem very judgemental towards the Englishman in this show, his skin color and what not, yet you it seems like you have this romantacised idea of the Japanese as pure and inocent.

I am aware of Japans history. I never claimed they weren't colonizers or oppressors as well. And as someone who is part of an oppressed minority, I take that very seriously. But I will call out behaviour that I don't agree with no matter who is doing it. Thus far, this show hasn't focused on what Japan has done/is doing outside of Korean references, which I did comment on saying was wrong

Let me guess, these friends of yours were asian only on ethnicity but born/grown in North America as well? :) The last samurai is not my fav but good, and its kind of a similar story with shogun, a foreign guy get hired to train the army with foreign tactics. Why would your friends get mad at it, i don't know, but as I said, it's a well known pattern in asians who live in countries from the western influence. Yuck.

Thank you, ma'am for this reaction. This by far is the most eloquent and funniest reaction of this series I have seen in the tube, I'm glad to have stumbled upon your channel and have subscribed and will look forward to your future reactions. And I agree with your points coming from a country who was both colonised by Spain and Japan. 300 years under the Spanish rule, the priests weren't really saints, they were even said to have raped women and fathered illegitimate children, all the oppression against our people treating them as inferior. This gave rise to rebel uprising and eventually were overturned by the masses, only to be conquered yet again by another coloniser, Japan. They too did rape and pillage our land and women. Not to mention they also did oppress their own. Then there was also the Americans. But among these foreign colonisers, at least Japan through their Emperor gave a formal apology to our country. This may have been a political but move, but we appreciate the gesture. There is history to remind us of these atrocities and we can only acknowledge them and move forward.

a reaction that I like, I'm from South America (my English is very bad), and I didn't like the protagonist at all, and the majority of reactions defend the "English", and I don't know, not to mention a reaction that seemed very racist, but at the same time she seems politically correct, whatever, but I'm going to like the protagonist, it seems that they are going to develop him very well, and his vision of the world is going to change, I was surprised when he saved some people on the boat

Yeah I feel like John is going to have the "ignorant prejudiced man to compassionate ally hero" storyline. He isn't so much racist right now as much as he's ignorant, and that ignorance has created prejudice. In fairness many of Japanese are also prejudiced against - well anyone not Japanese - as well. But John does have morals and respect for human life so that is a good base for his character to grow
