the tldr is that: time in tf2 is just a constantly increasing number. so when a map starts, it begins infinitely counting upward from 0. the other issue is that the game does addition with this counting timer number to know when to do something. ie, you've just fired the airblast, so it says, only allow the player to fire another airblast after < current timer value > + < airblast cooldown time >. so the issue is that unless you fire your sticky on tick 0 as soon as the map loads, you are asking the computer to add the biggest number it can possibly hold with the current time, which if you're adding anything besides 0 pushes it over the maximum number the computer can hold, therefore it breaks.

A 128-bit integer could represent that, though why they would use a 128-bit integer for anything in-game is beyond me. Also, I highly doubt the code they originally wrote for the pipe launcher used 128-bit integers, so if they did use them, that would still have required a change; at which point, why not just re-write the code to use something like an `Optional` (they would have had to implement that, but it can be just a struct containing a boolean and an unsigned long)?

That's actually pretty clever. Since ingame tick timer (time is int) and the explode timer are different data types (there's no way anything but floating point could store that number, and they set it to float max), they can never be compatible and match up, making the bomb last forever. I wonder who came up with this, but knowing Volvo they probably just stuck the largest number in there.
