Stihl 011 AVT: I finally got this old saw running!!!

I was gifted a really cool old chainsaw, and I just couldn't wait to fire it up! Unfortunately, it wasn't ready to run yet. I first needed to wrench on it a bit, which was an adventure. Finding parts proved to be much more difficult than a quick search on a stihl website, and finding a local tech to work on something this old was equally as tedious. Rather than letting it set and collect I opted for rolling the dice and ordering parts off ebay that looked close enough.
After all, all it needed was a new ignition coil, spark plug, fuel line, vent line, throttle cable, and a carburetor cleaning.
My thought was, "It already ain't running. Might as well give it a try"
I am glad I did too. I learned a bit and built a little needed confidence in myself too.

When taking apart carbs I do it on a dinner serving tray with a clean shop towel or paper towel on it. With the gaps I see in your workbench, I would loose half the carb parts before I got it back together.

Yes, sir! Where I actually do the work has terrible light and a magnetic surface. That tabletop has saved me a few times over the years

The 011 was my first Stihl, in 1989. I loved that saw but it was a little too small. I've had a few Stihl saws since, love 'em.

It's a great little saw. Of all the saws, I probably like the 011 with a 14" bar the best. Being super lightweight is a huge advantage. Granted on bigger jobs it stays on the tailgate, but I mainly only do storm clean up and other downed trees these days.

I got mine from my father yesterday from the cellar. That didn't work either. Unscrewed, cleaned, and still won't start. Found a hose on the carburetor that is brittle. I looked for a new one on Aliexpress. The hose provides the fuel supply for starting and idling. So it didn't work. A little alcohol injected into the gas and it ran (even if only for a short time). Just need to replace the hose.

Yep fuel lines rot out fairly often on these things but luckily they are easy to replace.

I just cleaned the old Tillotson carb out of my mid 1960s Homelite C-51 chainsaw and lost the little coil spring that goes under the little lever which operates the needle valve. I went to Tillotson's website and they still make carburetors but not this particular model but they do still have some of the parts used in these old carbs. They have a company here in North America that specializes in vintage obsolete parts so they hooked me up with them and they had the spring I needed, didn't even charge me. I'm still waiting for it to arrive but if you figure out what kind of carburetor you have, it should have a model number stamped on it somewhere, it could be a Tillotson, Zama, Walbro, etc etc you can try to contact them and they might be able to hook you up to the parts you need. You'll get more info and parts feedback by using the model of the carb instead of the model of chainsaw it came out of because chances are they used that carburetor in many different engines besides that chainsaw.

Rock and roll. It's a walbro. I have it running pretty nicely now. I slapped a 12" bar on it and it pulls through little firewood logs nice and easy. I am rather impressed with these older saws

@@dizzydad4708 I've never owned a Stihl but I'm trying to buy an 015 top handle saw off of a guy now, he wants $40 for it. It looks like a late 70s model to me. It's missing the air cleaner cover so I can't see exactly which model of 015 it is but I think it has points instead of electronic ignition. It also needs a new recoil spring.

How do you get the chain off this saw 011av

All I did was back the tension off the chain and use a 3/4" socket or wrench to remove the cover. After that it just comes off like any saw.

A question. Is your Stihl so loud that you have to wear hearing protection?

I have never noticed mine being any louder than any of my other saws. I couldn't even guess why that would happen, but I would start by replacing the gasket under the carburetor then i'd look over the muffler.

I had no luck finding a replacement carburetor. The best I could do was find a rebuild kit and try to clean it as best as I could. Good luck!
