Stihl ms 500i I’m having second thoughts

I’ve experienced this Stihl ms 500i in small wood a few times now . Don’t know if I like it

I would say the 500i is a good compromise saw. I have an 880 for quick milling of logs up to 22" wide; I also used it for felling them. After a while (and as I have got older) I found it too heavy for felling and bucking so I needed to get something in the middle, something lighter that could still handle a 25" bar. So I went for the 500i and have never regretted it. It has 75% of the 880's power but is only half the weight, meaning it is easily manoeuvrable for limbing and bucking. It's throttle response is unbelievable. Fits my needs perfectly.

They don't sound the best, I get what he's saying about small stuff too, not enough load on the motor to change it's tone. I do love it though, run a stock one and one modified by MasterMind.. its an animal. Mostly just run a 20" bar and use it for crane work

@@SLOCLMBR I have the 500i with 25" bar which is great for felling and bucking big stuff, then 576XP w/ 20" bar for the small stuff, it will run much longer on less fuel. The 500I is all open or all shut, it has no progressive power like a carb feel it's all on or all off kind of deal as far as power goes, great for the demanding cuts but not for doing lots of smaller stuff. I balk at this guy doing small stuff with a 36" bar it's i bit silly safety wise and harder on your back, easier to drop the bar on the dirt and dull your chain which will take 2 times longer to sharpen. Set yourself up with 2 saws and switch between them, my 2 cents worth.

Add a bark box to address sound, but power to weight is incredible. Bucking is fast. 20” bar or 28” depending on the distance to travel in and size of wood to cut. IMHO nothing better bigger saws are just heavier and I don’t see the point of them out in the woods. 500i strikes a great balance. My 201 is my preferred carry, and my 365special is now my #2, and still a lovely saw to run.

@@michaellawcobb2693 Yeah the light compact design v's the MS661c is the best thing about this saw and being older fella it's a big plus when lugging it around terrain and obstacles. I had gone in to buy a 661 and none were avail so went the 500i, I dropped by another dealer on way home and felt the 661 in my hands and I was quite happy with the decision, 661 is a big saw. Interestingly it suffers the same air box poor design issue. I think Stihl should make a fix for the issue. I spoke to the dealer about it and he just keeps to his good ol line "well we've sold hundreds of 500i's and not one has come back" well maybe not yet. They do suck fine dust into throttle body and I'm experimenting with work arounds, I haven't even put two whole tanks through it but 3 good heat cycles with some run in revving on first cycle. happy enough so far. I like the idea of bark box but as I'm in Australia it's too expensive to buy and have shipped these days to bother. USPS is a darn rip off, but everything is these days.

Living Adam Man I hear you on the USPS costs, it was expensive to get one to Canada too. I did come across an Oz fabricator(?) who showed an aftermarket exhaust but he was out of stock last time I checked which was this time last year. You might want to do a local search as it seems like Oz is well supported domestically by saw shops, tuners and after mkt suppliers. It’s a thirsty saw but the performance is there and for me that offsets it. In my opinion the mods and the auto tune ability of the saw make it worthwhile and should help the saw to last for years of use. I’m not a professional sawyer but... I have a few other saws that now better have specific roles now that I have the 500i before I had to compromise more in choosing one over another.

Buckin stays on my roku at home. My wife is even hooked, she says she didn't think there was anyone who loved tree work as much as I do until she watched your video. I've been in the tree industry since 14 every aspect from production felling to climbing I'm in my glory anytime I have my saw eating. I do not like the 500i id take a 461 or 372 over it any day of the week. Thank you buckin for putting out such great videos keep it up

Some people just aren't happy unless they have the latest greatest thing. I know guys that replace their toys about every 1-2 years even though they often wish that they had some of their older ones back. I straight up love more things about certain of the old school things than I do any of the new stuff. I am not particular to stihl, husky, chevy, ford, etc. They all had certain great models.

Every saw has that range of stuff that it excels at and o get areas that it doesn’t. That’s the glory of having options and being able to know what works best for you and your needs. But at the end of the day, we have it easy compared to the ole boys with big cross cuts saws and axes. Love to you and the family❤️

Im with ya buckin, i bought one and 2 weeks in I cleaned it up and sold it. Was great till it got hot and then I think I stretched my right arm pulling on it to get it to crank. Ill stick with my huskies I have the ol school 272, 371,372,394, 395, and some of the new saws. I love em all, never an issue with them. Love your videos!!! Much love from AZ!!

The issue with the 500i trying to start it when it's hot is the fuel is turned to gas in the fuel lines and injector and pump. The way to get it started when it's hot is to push the primer really fast a bunch of times and then quickly pull the starter. It gets liquid fuel in the place of the gas that filled the lines and pump and injector. I think the 500i could use some work with separating the fuel delivery system from the heat of the engine

Hello Buckin Army. I along with my disabled wife had two weeks of misery, called hurricane IDA. We were in our house with power being provided by a generator that ran everything except the central AC, it kept the refrigerator running so we had fresh food. Sitting in an unairconditioned house in SE Louisiana with temps around 93 Fc (inside the house temps were in the high 80's) is not a fun thing. Things went from bad but bad got worse when our generator froze up because it ran out of oil. I had to find a new one in a town that didn't have electricity and big trees were lying in the roadway. I put a call-up on Facebook and one of my high school buddies told me where I could get one. To sum a nightmare up, we bravely got things together, the extra lineman from other states were able to restore power to our neighborhood within the next week. Sleeping in your bed without fans was not fun I can assure you that. Buckin it is a joy seeing you again!

We got hit bad here in NJ, my local CREEK went up 30 feet......not river.....but a little creek, in 15 minutes!! My neighbor lost Over 150k in Trucks and motorcycles, water up to the Roof! His brand new Ford Raptor wouldn't even start...electronics Fried.....I had to use my old piece of Shit 89 F250 to PUSH him out of the road, while it was stuck in park!...and I did it in Reverse, not 1st gear!..LOL.....My sewer backed up into the basement about 2 feet...everything Ruined, luckily my Heater/AC stills works......but still ripping out the Entire basement walls cause it stinks......my other neighbor got 8 FEET in his basement! We all live on Hills too......we get floods all the time here, but this was bad, ground was saturated from a previous storm, so This water had Nowhere to go......

Well I got to agree with you on the Smallwood it didn't sound good I've got my 888 it's brand new I've never even had a chance to throw it myself I had that heart surgery last Tuesday and I'm not supposed to mess with for 4 to 6 weeks but I wish you were here I'd let you run that 888 it's a great song I got a 38 inch bar on it it's pretty good chain and I got that 440 chain or 404 whatever it is we can't run it for 4 to 6 weeks just sucks I've never even got to start it up yet love your show awesome video very positive channel you're the man

Well wouldn't you know, I finally got my hands on a 500i here too. The boss is replacing our 441's with them and boy does it go! Maybe it's a placebo but compared to the 441 and my 461 the damn thing just wants to pull right out of my hands. Had a couple of back cuts go a little a'stray on me and a few angled hinges not work the way I wanted either on our big Scots pine but maybe it's just me getting used to the different saw. I think I like it a lot but I agree it doesn't sound right to me, even when it's in bigger wood. Stay safe and cut straight 🙏

I have a 500i and absolutely love it! I’m running a West Coast Bark Box with a 25 inch Stihl Light bar and full chisel chain. I’m getting pretty good at hand filing too. That thing just eats whatever you put in front of it. Incredible power to weight ratio! I don’t think enough people are giving it credit for how light it is. With a 25 inch light bar I can lug that thing around all day long. Sure you can buy a 661 or 881 and have more power but they are heavy as a rock and so are the husky’s. The only negative thing I would say about it is it’s hard on fuel. When you’re just limbing and cutting up small stuff it’s very efficient on fuel and the tank will last you for hours. But, when you bury it in big wood and are holding it wide open throttle you can literally burn through a tank of gas in like 20 minutes.

I’m happy to pay for fuel, even if I have to carry it in w me if I can optimize productivity. Don’t get tired as easy when staring at 10-20% increased cut wood in the hour or so earlier than other comparable saws one has to hump around, and then out again. I’d rather run out of gas carrying an empty saw out knowing I cut qty in less time/w time still on the setting e/o day.

I have been cutting firewood for 30 years with a 16, 18 & 20 inch blade. I figured a sore back was just part of the gig. I like that long blade. Seems like over kill for the job but looks better for the back.

Had all my wood for this winter put up last year. Getting a sawmill at the end of October, so I thought I'd get a 500i for the big oaks. Turns out they're hard to come by. Got my name on a list, but no idea of when I will get one. I'll be cutting next winter's wood from the tops and snags left over from my saw logs. I will say that I like the sound of Buckin's old saws over the new ones. Those old saws are hard to beat if you can get your hands on a decent one.

Great video mate! I agree the old saws do have a nice sound! But I have a stock 500i and it's alright in our Aussie hard woods make it work hard and I've found for me it's more productive! But you are right each saw for each task. My old 066 is my go to mid to big wood saw and the sound it makes does make me smile more! Even the new 881 stock sounds nice in large hard wood and pulls a 41" bar nose deep no sweat too. you should try one of them out if you get a chance! Great video as always mate! I used to log cottonwood and my last two saws were 066s. 30 inch bars 404 .63 guage. I had 075s, 056s and 084s and the 066 was the best compromise for weight vs power. Cut lots of 4 to 5 foot diameter stuff

I have the Egans on my 461 and west coast bark box on the 500i, I would say the main difference is the egans is significantly heavier, probably twice the weight, I’d say it’s almost 2 pounds for the 461 muffler cover alone. Just something to keep in mind if you want to keep it light as possible!

I own a 500i definitely dont use it on small wood as the computer freaks out and revs too high when it not being held back by big wood and I dont like the sound of the westcoast exhaust. Sorry personal thing I'll leave mine stock but with west coast dogs 👍🏻👍🏻.

I love my 500I, im a tree surgeon in southwest Colorado and I keep 3 different bars for mine depending on the situation but 25" seems ideal most of the time I wont use another saw unless I half too!!!

i agree, its so light. I drill out the oil feed hole on the bar air filter design is great and definately the best saw avaliable atm. Sthil outdone themselves as no need for 66 an 88 seiries

@@Dumperdriver1 I find the air filter to be less than great, I had a lot of fines getting around it. Ended up modding a 661 max flow kit to kit and absolutely love it.

I agree the 500I is not for small wood, runs too fat and or on the limiter, for everything else it's nasty for a stock saw.

@@BuckinBillyRaySmith Put an 8 pin on her, makes a world of difference with that added chain speed, and it will pull 32 just fine. I'm running an 8 on mine with a 28 in hardwood and it rips, even with an aggressive chain, so out west it would pull a 32 no problem with an 8 pin.

Can't say I'd be using the 500i on small stuff but sounded great to me! The husky he grabbed that rattling was starting to get on my nerves though.

The reason why its 4 stroking so bad when he's doing those light cuts with the tip is because there's not enough load on it and the 500i really likes to rev. It also doesn't have a rev limiter in the normal sense (as in cutting spark), the computer limits the RPM by enriching the fuel mixture until it drops the rpm to 14-15k, if not enough load is present to keep it lower than that.

That MS500 would have been nice earlier today. Hurricane Ida has taken down quite a few trees in south Louisiana, and one of the trees I was cutting up was a 30" diameter oak that uprooted, and it had my poor saw at it's limits.
