The Stihl MS500i showed up at my door . I unbox it to notice a half wrap handle bar. With some quick logger magic I dress it up in a full wrap handle bar and 32” bar full house chain . And put it to work in big wood

I had to get out of bed as soon as I saw the title. I'm not a professional arborist (yet) but I got myself a 500i a few months ago (here in Europe they're available "over the counter" :D). it's brutal. absolutely aggressive acceleration. most of the times starts on the 2nd pull (from stone dead), never had more than three pulls though (not even the first start!). the only downside is the filter system. you have to fabricobble something together to keep it chip-tight because in stock form it isn't quite - there are two openings to the filter where chips/dust can get in, one is the main opening (which is tight) and the other is the one that the cam engages the cover.
@jirusjirus93223 жыл бұрын
Good to know... Thank you for your observations
@jodelboy3 жыл бұрын
@@jirusjirus9322 no worries. I fixed mine by adding a rubber "washer" over the filter-housing-cover cam-nipple where it locks on (by cutting a piece of bicycle inner-tube to size). it's definitly tight now, not letting any particles through. did the same around the "main" hole in the filter, just a ring of rubber around the housing fixed it completely. also, now the cam locks on more positively (not hotdog-down-the-hallway-style like stock)

Just bought a 500i AWESOME saw! I highly recommend it if you fell for a living ☝️
@moose11643 жыл бұрын
The 500i is by far the best saw that Stihl has released in my opinion. At first, I didn't like it, but after a week of using it every day in the brush I've come to love it. Mine had a break in period of at least 10 hour run time then it completely opened up. From what ive read other people said the same thing. Out of the box til now it's a completely different saw. Give it a chance you will enjoy it. The thing I like the most about it is the consistency it gives you. The power is always there which is where fuel injected shines in my opinion. Surprisingly I haven't felt like I've needed more power and I've put it in some very big wood.
@stevefrazier22143 жыл бұрын
Drop it and see how it runs. Just bouncing around in a truck bed has required us to bring our “electronic tuned” saws back the dealer repeatedly at $60 a pop. They have to plug them in and reflash/update the tune.
@andrewnorris15143 жыл бұрын
Do you think he will be flashing his own saws should he sign on?
@moose11643 жыл бұрын
@@stevefrazier2214 naw man I totally get where you're coming from. I get it. Luckily I haven't had that problem. I always take extra good care of my tools and equipment though because that's an extra expense that can be prevented by taking the extra time out. Fuel injected saws has alot of room to be improved upon but I think it's the potential gold standard. I'm not a believer in battery powered when it come to heavy usage. The 500i is an outstanding new platform to build off of though.
@stevefrazier22143 жыл бұрын
@@moose1164 we have had the battery powered top handle huskies since they came out, 5+ years? The saws and the batteries have outlasted any gas top handle I’ve ever owned. A husky rep shocked when we told him how old they were and joked about needing to do something about that...you probably know gas are rated for a certain amount of hours of use. We currently have 5 battery saws, including the new version. We no longer own a gas powered top handle. We grab a 50cc gasser when the top handles are not enough. The new husky with the nano cut bar/chain from Oregon is the tits. Battery powered saws for technical climbing and lift work are awesome. No pull start, no idling saw. Waiting for the day a power to weight battery saw competes with a 120cc saw!
@moose11643 жыл бұрын
@@stevefrazier2214 oh I agree. I like the battery top handle saws for climbing but I've ran into limbs that a battery powered couldn't finish the job. The actual power is where they need to make the most improvements in my opinion. Battery power has come a long way and will eventually surpass gas I think.

My first job was block packer in a small mill here in the Kootenays, I was 13 and they taught me how to run a chain saw with an 070 Stihl, and a 090 Stihl. I had to hook my toes into the handle and handle bars, hold the pull cord and stand up to start those saws, but I did start them. lol. From day one I was in love with chainsaws, and now 40 years later I still love chainsaws, I play with them, and work with them, build and repair saws, but for the life of me, I have never been very good at tuning a carb!!! It always amazes me how quickly you can hear and fix a poorly adjusted carb. God bless.

"Stihl" holdin' on to the 461's. I've fell, bucked and blown up a few. Still love em. The 462s and the 500s have just felt too damn "squishy" I've yet to try one with the after market motor mounts so I can't rightly disapprove. As far as the Bark Box goes... well, absolute must have. West coast is killing it with them things. Buckin' has sparked hope in me for the 500i for sure. I'm just not sure if it's just his "contagious positivity" or not. Take care Buckin'. You're a damn legend.
@longlowdog3 жыл бұрын
Modern Scandi' saws are made with a firm sight on complying with hand-arm vibration figures hence the squishiness. You wouldn't believe the lengths European employers have to go to to comply with regulations. However, the way the 500i is set up the daily exposure limits are similar to a saw two cc classes lower.
@towertrash9783 жыл бұрын
@@longlowdog I understand why they're squishy. It just doesn't work for cutting in the Pacific Northwest. I don't care about vibration. It's a great saw. I just want to run it with the stiffened up 661 mounts I've heard you can use.

Thanks for the video and your thumbs up on the Bark Box. I've had my 500i for a couple of weeks, waited 2 years, and really like the weight and manueverability. You sold me the muffler mod. Still waiting for the rings to "seat in"!!! 🤣

Getting her done as always. Hell...... give everybody a camera, and fly a drone. Put some drum rolls it there, maybe some cow bell. Mix it up a little Bucking. That camera in this on is good when that hinge broke. I could almost smell it. Very good!..

Billy Ray, one thing that happens with these computerized saws is they "learn" from the throttle demand and the actual engine rpm as to what the load is. If throttle demand is 100%, but engine rpm is low, then the system can add more fuel to compensate. Sometimes this process takes a couple cuts to allow enough data for the computer to make the adjustments. It doesn't happen with a single quick cut under heavy load because then subsequent cuts will be too rich. If you're doing big cut after big cut, it'll start to dump more fuel in. If you switch back from Buckin' to Limbin', you may detect less power when you then jump back into a heavy load cut.
