Still Wakes the Deep Review "Buy, Wait for Sale, Gamepass or pass"
STILL WAKES THE DEEP is a return to the first-person narrative horror genre for The Chinese Room, creator of critically acclaimed games such as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther.
You are an offshore oil rig worker, fighting for your life through a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters. All lines of communication have been severed. All exits are gone. All that remains is to face the unknowable horror that’s come aboard.

You should maybe shed some light on GamePass having an inferior version of this game compared to Steam and Epic. You are one of the most respected reviewers out there - it might put some pressure on Xbox to find a fix for this issue which has affected quite a few games now. How can you get excited for new Day One games that have features like DLSS/FSR and FOV etc removed?

A rare instance of the walking sim/horror game that actually has fully modelled, voiced and animated NPCs. That alone is enough to sell me on this type of game. Really refreshing to see. So tired of the decades of these types of games where everyone's already dead/missing, and you're the lone survivor. Will definitely check it out when I get the chance.

If Chinese Room could combine its obvious talent for immersion, writing, detail and voice work with the gameplay and exploration of something like an Alien Isolation then we would have game of the year contenders. The almost brutal realism of this game just adds to the horror and some scenes are genuinely disturbing and not in that "fun" horror way. You can clearly see the influence of Carpenters The Thing with the body horror but also with the tension, banter and the isolation.

Really curious how this was developed alongside Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2. Did they make most of this before taking on the job or did development start after? It looks way better than the footage they showed of Bloodlines 2, although I’m pretty sure they are reusing assets Hardsuit Labs made for that game.

I don't understand the part about replayability. You replay a game because you want to relive the experience/story again. No need for things in the game to change, although it's a nice plus (personally though, i tend to make the same choices, if i liked how my previous playthrough felt, that's the reason i replay it after all). It's like with a movie - you watch it again, because you want to experience it again, maybe a year later.
@ProjectPhoenix21
@ProjectPhoenix21 8 күн бұрын
This generation of games usually want that kind of replayability where things play out differently or you can go back and collect things you’ve missed. I’m with you though, I grew up playing video games over and over and over again almost exactly the same just for the experience. My favorite game of all time is Shadow of the Colossus and there is a very, very limited ways to play that game, or to mention once you e experienced the game once, that’s it, you’ll never have that same level of wonder again. But I still love it to death and have replayed it, along with its remaster and remake countless times. But I like that ACG points out that you aren’t exactly getting a multiple choice, save certain characters, multiple endings type of deal here. It’s transparent and it helps some people make their choice. I will most likely give the game another go in the future. The setting and atmosphere were fantastic.

What I did not quite get is: are there chase sequences, just like in Layers of Fear 2 or are you hunted like in Alien isolation? Are you required to hide from monsters otherwise it's game over? Because that's not what I would associate with a walking sim, as I'm thinking more of LoF1, Firewatch, Dear Esther, rachel foster, etc. But if you're just losing characters to monsters, just as in something like The Quarry, that would be pretty cool. Would be nice if someone could enlighten me on that

Just finished the game, you do “hide” from the monsters but it felt more like a safe zone in a game of tag. Haven’t played the quarry, but if it’s like until dawn, it’s less of having a set group of characters that get picked off and more like going around the rig and seeing/meeting survivors and having them die or have them already dead, but you do have a brief pre-disaster part where your character interacts with others where you somewhat get to know them, at least by name.

Way too many games on the backburner to pick this up at the moment. Would be nice to evolve the walking sim genre a bit at this point. A neat mechanic, light gunplay, or making choices that matter would all go a long way to engage the player. Maybe I’ve been playing too much cyberpunk 2077 but the graphics quality shown here reminds me of that game. In short I just want more cyberpunk…

You can rearrange the title of this game in almost almost any way and it still works. The Still Wakes Deep. Wake The Deep Still. The Wake, Still Deep.

meh idk. If a movie was 6 hours long it would need to have a really good reason to be that long. I have a hard time believing there aren't a lot of moments in this game that feel like wasted time.

Yeah man, the voice work was great. I started playing it while my wife was in the kitchen making dinner and she asked me “what are you watching?”. She can usually tell video game dialogue from watching a movie or tv show. We ended up playing the game all the way through and yeah, it’s was fantastic. You can hear the fear and regret in Caz voice.

Just beat the game after buying it on PlayStation. Seem to be some graphics issues where the game didn’t register some commands or button prompts wouldn’t trigger right. But I loved it zero regrets buying it I plan to platinum it which is rare. I haven’t platinum a game in couple years.

Dont play it on game pass. The gamepass version has NO DLSS or FSR and and it runs like crap. Game is barely playable without DLSS or FSR. My specs are above recommended and yet i dont get more than 40 fps.

@@user-sj8to3un3l The fact that you think it's weird, is weird. Considering how many games ignore story almost entirely, or the story is irrelevant and ignored.

@@MovingTargetOne with the exception of sports games I’m struggling to think of games that don’t resolve around story. Witcher series, Horizon, Assassin Creed, Uncharted, Baldurs Gate, Avatar, Final Fantasy, Call of Duty Campaigns, Resident Evil etc…not here to argue but interested to know what you’ve been playing these past twenty years.
