One of the best awls for the money is a Seiwa #1. Oka Factory makes a very similar awl.

I think matelot is something like sailor or seaman. Weird but still within the realm of navy..

Oil dye is Pro dye, Fieblings just later used a different name for marketing.

That's interesting! I got this from their website: 'It is the same product as always, it just has a new name. It is a solvent based dye, always has been, so we wanted to reduce confusion by changing the name. The oil refers to the oils in the dyes and colorants that create the colors but the base of the dye is a solvent like standard leather dye.'

Amy roke has a pretty cheap, pre sharpened awl (sub $20). The handle is small but works for me.

Something i cannot find out yet: How you attach the english clams on your workbench? Did you drill a hole and screwed it on a metal corner? Is it a sleeve or strap that holds it there? I cannot seem to find a way to mount mine on upright without ruining my clams :/

They are clamped in the jaws of a hobby vice, which is then clamped to my worktable 👍 hi-spec.com/products/hi-spec-1-piece-hobby-craftwork-mini-table-clamping-vice-for-diy-repairs-modelling-painting-gluing-soldering-crafting
