Both the 60s and the 90s were peak eras for EC imoho. During the 70s into the 80s, I’d go see him play and he was always fine, but without the fire of his playing in live Cream and on the Mayall stuff. During those later decades he seemed to be coasting (and by his own account, partying a lot). In concerts during those years, he’d play Crossroads at a slower tempo, sometimes even a reggae feel. I used to think to myself ‘I don’t think he could play it like he did in Cream even if he wanted to..’ In the mid to late 80s a couple things happened: Clapton got sober and healthy Stevie Ray Vaughan came on the scene and kicked every other blues guitarist’s a**. I’m pretty sure EC took plenty of notice of SRV and it’s no coincidence that he stepped up his own game. When I saw Clapton in 1989 he was playing with fire again. When I saw him in 1994 on the all blues tour, he was amazing, the best I’ve ever personally heard him play live. I was too young to see Cream but I did get to see Derek and the Dominoes on their one and only tour. Clapton was good on the Dominoes 1970 tour, he was better on the 90s Nothing But the Blues tour. I remember thinking on that night in Nov 1994 ‘he didn’t play Crossroads tonight but if he’d wanted to, he could have nailed the live Cream version and tempo.’ He was on fire that night, and through that whole time.

@@ewanmcfadyen Jimi went to London initially to gig with Cream but on the advise of then Mgr. Chas Chandler he changed the spelling of his name and then he was introduced to Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell who were popular session musicians and their first gig must have been magical. The rest as they say is history. If it wasn't for Eric there would be no Jimi Hendrix Experience. This isn't my opinion, they're the facts....

@Thundergod- 5 жыл бұрын
@@ewanmcfadyen Wish I could have been at that club in London on 1-10-1966 when Jimi jammed with Cream (.Although I was but a lad of 11 at the time) Everybody's jaw must have dropped when he unleashed his full repertoire, playing with his teeth, behind the back and probably the first to make love to his guitar. At some point Clapton just gave up and walked off the stage saying he'd never be able to play like that. Please forgive me if I'm rambling a bit. In spite of that they became friends and years later Eric bought Hendrix a white left-handed Strat that Jimi sadly never received because of his tragic and untimely death. Some believe a conspiracy theory that he was murdered by his then manager who took out an insurance policy and then made it look like an overdose.(Supposedly by forcing him to eat barbiturates with wine) This being over record contract money or some legal stuff. Be that as it may Eric took his death very hard. Both are obviously legends....

Jimi Hendrix 3. Eric Clapton

Some foolish kids have commented that this version makes Jimi's version look amateur. I'm sure they have no clue about the guitar playing because if they did, they'd know that Jimi played as the only guitarist in his band whilst Eric is with Andy here. Eric is a monster, no doubt, but you'd have to be a thick head to talk crap about Hendrix.

If you've really dug into Jimi's catalogue of live performances, jams and unreleased songs you could never make such an asinine comment. Maybe his playing is too free flowing for you or it's a racial issue I don't know. Not bashing on EC, he's great, but Jimi was a wizard with the guitar channeling the depths of the subconscious with his playing.
