Feels like the strongman stuff got shoved off to the side so the main stage could have people slapping each other in the face. Stuff like that makes me question if I want to waste the gas and drive 2 hours south to see crap like that. It was literally hidden in the back corner of the building. If you didn't know it was there you would not know they had a strongman show. I enjoyed the powerlifting and jujitsu tournament. Plus the expo was cool as it wasn't really busy. But the garbage like the slap fighting needs to go.

@@martygough Giving them 30 seconds extra time for lapping it would have no effect on the difficulty, would it? Just compare any of the first timers to Licis or Novikov, whom both have done the event multiple times before - effectively having had way more time to optimize their lifts. Giving them more time would absolutely had made it more interesting both as a viewer and contestant.

It did look as if that 200kg log came straight down onto his knee from about 6 feet up, though angles can be deceptive. I wonder if his age might be a factor in that decision - he's 39 and might have been looking at retirement in the next year or two anyway; if you get an injury that's gonna take you a year to come back from you might think differently about that than if you were in your early 30s? Hoping he makes a full recovery anyway!

Arnolds should definitely get rid of that 30 seconds to the lap rule here. People like to see the struggle. It's what the arnolds is all about. As one comment mentioned it was anticlimactic in the case of some athletes turns getting cut short due to the rule. 30 seconds is like the blink of an eye on such an event. Some were just getting the feel for the stone when the 30 second rule stopped them.

Martins has trained these kind of stones outside of Haugen's gym. Go watch the video where he's in Iceland with Hafthor training these stones. @@CarnageIsILL like I said. I have no dog in the fight. I'm just noting the size, odd shape and the balance of the rock or rocks are not as comparable as you think. Here's an example. If you throw the javelin. 5 athletes are in the competition. They all trained with their own spears that have different, lengths, balance and weight. All are very strong and expert with their spears. But on the day of the contest its ruled everybody has to use #3s javelin. What are the odds #3 will win the competition. I'm hoping I'll get an honest answer but I'm not holding my breath.

Is it just me or have the quality of strongmen dropped since Thor and Eddie retired, and Brian Shaw and Zydrunas got older

Those 4 are all legends. Some of the best strongman has ever seen. We had the amazing opportunity to see them compete against each other year after year. I miss them but several of these guys were actually massive worries for those 4. Martins struggled staying healthy as mateusz is right now. Both incredible. Novikov is young and will be a staple of elite performance for years more. Bob Kearney has become an incredible competitor. You'll see some guys improve every competition this year. I'm excited about what the future will bring.
