The very first time I took my GSP to the grouse woods hunting. She ran off and wouldn't come back. I was with a couple guys so I didn't let them know I was stressed about it, but I was dreading going home to tell my wife I lost the dog. When we made it back to the truck, she was there whining scared that she was lost forever. It was the best thing that has ever happened to her. She learned that day to check in with me. When she was younger, if she was hunting a little too far and not checking back in, I would hide right off the trail and when she looked back and I wasn't there, she'd come to look for me. She's two now and her recall is awesome. She isn't the most honest when holding a bird yet, but she's getting there.

Hide & seek is one of my favorite games with my pups! Their noses are incredible. Can be dead silent and they still know right where I am! They also love playing the “go find ‘em” game where I take little dollar store condiment cups and put a small treat in each then hide them around the back yard. I let them smell a treat in my hand and say, “go find ‘em” and off they go. Super fun for us all.

My dog spent the first two years of his life coming to work with me every day in a machine shop. He does great in any setting but even learning how to behave in a busy shop is a very interesting skillset for a dog. He was kenneled for his first year and by the time he was 2 he had his cot under my workbench and knew all of his boundaries within the shop. He would periodically get up and go make his rounds visiting the office folks and he knew when breaktimes and lunch were supposed to be. The customer service call center on the other side of the greenbelt in our business park employed a lot of college age kids and boy does Hank like the ladies. Such a great wingman.

Kimber in the treats at the end made me laugh. My 5 month old GSP keeps sneaking in the pouch when I'm putting her leash on in the boot of the car- I'm a slow learner!

Good dogs, and great helpers. Can't beat that. Bumped into a guy today, walking his American Black Lab pup and passed along your channel for input on how to get help working his pup. And, a fine young lad that pup is too.

I love this! I can get discouraged that my dog isn’t always where I want him in his training, but then I see videos like this to remind me how much he does well. I’m going to try this method of hide and seek. He always gets nervous when I try to play with him, but this might show him it’s a game instead of him losing me.

generally a fan of this channel, even when I disagree with specific training points I find that there is at least a kernel of truth to learn from. However, the point about cats in trees made me laugh- you don't find cat skeletons in trees because they jump down eventually (whether or not they survive that jump depends on a number of factors). Cats can climb upwards but can't climb downwards because of the shape of their claws, they aren't staying in the tree because people are "acting weird" lol

I think pretty much all approaches are okay as long as they are implemented with consistency and patience. Some tools are super easy to use improperly so extra care must be taken to train responsibly when using those methodologies.

Hey Stonie, my 8 month old lab is wonderfully obedient despite all previously encountered weather conditions, I’d love to get into search and rescue work but, she bites the water every time I try to let her have a free swim… Do you have any recommendations for that issue?

How do you train your dogs to avoid snakes. I lost my GSD to a pigmy rattler in my own yard. It was awful.
@mikeewing6035

Look on the internet for rattlesnake avoidance training. Also, check with hunting dog clubs in your area. The training works well. They teach dogs to recognize rattlesnakes by sight, sound and scent.

Hey Stonnie. Our Luna (13 weeks gsp) behaves exactly like Kimber. We have her out running and adventuring and swimming, she is fantastic. We just got back from puppy training and are hearing about restricting and monitoring her activity levels because of bones and knuckles having to grow until age 12 months. I have heard you repeat yourself so many times in your videos about letting the pups get some real exercise and experience. Is this nonsense puppy training we are meeting in our surroundings? Appreciate your work. Thanks
@StonnieDennis

Does that make sense to you? Do you think it would be a good idea to limit children’s exercise until their growth plates are closed, which doesn’t happen until late teens/early twenties? Exercise reveals problems, it doesn’t cause problems.
