I was worried about that same thing. but I've decided ultimately I live in a busy big city and the socialization is more important than anything. doing lower traffic areas after first shots then higher traffic areas after second shots. I domt think waiting til 16 weeks is a good idea in my opinion. not depends on what you want at the end. fyi seeing eye dogs start their training at 8 or 10 weeks going everywhere o went to u o guelph and lots of future guide dogs out everywhere at 8 weeks

Stonnie, would you be able to make a video based on secondary reinforcers? I know we live in a world where people think treat training is a means to an end, but not all dogs prefer treats or food. Some prefer to work for play whether it be tug, fetch, etc. My cattle dog doesn't care for his food or treats as rewards. His parents worked stock on a cattle ranch in California so i think it's more genetic than anything. Our training has skyrocket as soon as I ditched food and switched to secondary reinforcers. Thx.
@StonnieDennis3 жыл бұрын
The bottom line is genetics rule the day with habit taking a close second. All dog training strategies and techniques are simply ways to stack enough repetitions to create habits. That's why there's so much argument; pretty much any methodology can be used successfully as long as the dog has the proper genetic tendencies, the methodology is implemented correctly, and the trainer is has realistic timeline preferences.

Anthony Falzarano Not too late at all. Anytime you can get started before 16 or 18 weeks things work out just fine, it just takes a bit more patience and perseverance. No worries of upset belly....doggy butt trumpet lol.....and you will actually ration it (make sure that the puppy is HUNGRY when training). Malinois training How would you compare a Belgian Malinois to an Australian Cattle Dog's drive? I really want a Malinois as my next dog. I think I am ready, but I am just gathering as much info as possible. My cattle dog loves to work (fetch,tug, run, commands), and I deeply enjoy training him. There is nothing like the bond you create with a dog that wants to train and aims to please. Thx for any insight.
@malinoistraining82247 жыл бұрын
im not to familiar with the ACD. but its a working dog and i would expect it to be high on drive as well as maintenance. edit: sorry but i misread that. My Malinois isextremely high on drive. Comparoing to cars i would say shes a Formula 1 car. extremely easy to train but also extremely easy to mess up with. if you go with a malionois id suggest a lot of tracking and nose work. this tires them out, eventually..

Malinois training Thanks! Great info. My cattle dog is relentless at times. I am sure a Belgian Malinois would be even more work than I already have on my hands. The biggest reason why I would want one would be their desire to train. I think maybe in a year or two I will get a Malinois. once I have fully raised my pup.

Have you thought about teaching these type of commands by shaping instead?
@StonnieDennis7 жыл бұрын
What, specifically, are you asking? This is a very good demonstration of "shaping"...
@mariaenroth70587 жыл бұрын
Stonnie Dennis Ah, sorry English isn't my mother tongue. By shaping I meant what's also known as clicker training. :) What I see here is luring.
@StonnieDennis7 жыл бұрын
Maria Harteva Marker training with a clicker, is still just marker training. I believe you may be confused with your terminology, as marker trainer Is dependant upon targeting/luring except when "free shaping". In this video, I'm specifically working on teaching leash compliance, postural differentiation, and a teeny bit of vocal cue discrimination.
@mariaenroth70587 жыл бұрын
Stonnie Dennis Oh crap, yeah you're right. Thanks for your thoughtful answer! I'm from the Nordic countries where clicker training refers to free shaping and only that. As in the dog offers behaviour and gets rewarded for each step closer. Our oldest shepherd has been trained to agility with it, our youngster Dobermann is trained for IPO with it and our puppy shepherd will be trained obedience with it. I know it's a big questionmark since it's usually associated with teaching the dog tricks. It was a big step for us too to try out but I'm happy we did. :) Again thank you so much for the explanation!
@StonnieDennis7 жыл бұрын
Maria Harteva No worries. If you will watch my other videos, you will notice that I do the majority of my training in an open environment, with lots of other dogs running around and playing. I try to shape the environment and let the environment shape the pups. In my particular situation, using sound markers can cause a bit of confusion. But I'm a big fan of using markers when it comes to behavior chains that require a high degree of precision.
