wouldn't you agree that it is futile and a waste of time to argue so adamantly over your view that an entire fifty minutes worth of audio is to be labeled as a single "genre" (though a more fitting term is "medium") as opposed to thinking for two seconds outside of the box to come to the conclusion that things never fall under just one category, and it is much more accurate to label a musical album such as this one with multiple tags (gothic rock, shoegaze, post punk); argument solved. I think that is the longest sentence I've written in my life.@@PoorEdward

@@spongbong0yeah adding multiple genres to an album is still categorizing it. And as the guy above said, the purpose is utility. If I listen to a song, and I like how it sounds and want to hear more, I look for more songs in that genre. Without categories, you don't have to place to start looking. You'd just be listening to songs randomly until you found one that sounded similar. Utility is never a waste of time.

@PoorEdward I'm not saying no one should care, I'm just saying I already like most if not all genre's, so my personal attention is on whether the music is good or not ad not arguing about the genre(s) it falls under. I'm mostly talking about like super specific ones or ones where it's debatable or hard to pin down what genre an album or artist belongs to. That usually tends to be some of my favorite actually. I really like when it's hard to specifically categorize an album

in my opinion, this record contains shoegaze elements but is certainly not primarily shoegaze. i've always viewed it as more of a secondary genre personally. it's very present in tracks like Bloodhail, Earthmover and especially I Don't Love but as a whole i view it as more of a post-punk / post-rock album that happens to have some elements of shoegaze amongst many other genres within. to be honest this album has always transcended genre for me. it took me over a year of being a massive fan for me to even consider that it has genres lol. it's one of those albums that's really hard to fully narrow down, this is just my take on things.
@vincentskater22 күн бұрын
I completely agree; you took the words right out of my mouth! It's also over an hour long; there is a ton to pick apart! Just because they call themselves doomgaze doesn’t make doomgaze a real genre. If Tyler the creator starts calling his music “fart rap”, does that automatically make fart rap a real genre?
@randomsomeguy15622 күн бұрын
@@BigOwl51 Yes, actually! Doesn't the artist hold authority over the genre or style of their own work? Who decides what is or isn't a genre if not the artist themselves? Furthermore, if I create an album intending it to be rock, but listeners perceive it as jazz, then perhaps I've produced 'bad' rock but 'good' jazz. However, that doesn't negate the original intended genre. As the audience or critic, you should either: a) stop overanalyzing and simply enjoy the music without labels, or b) if you are going to delve deeper, then assess the album in the context of the artist's intentions, because any other approach results in invalid criticism. If Tyler, the Creator releases an album-regardless of its quality-and calls it 'fart rap,' what prevents that from becoming a real genre? You can draw parallels between genres, and a new genre might closely resemble an existing one (so perhaps they could be merged), but to declare 'it's not real' lacks any basis and is entirely irrelevant, as the artist owns their art. If the audience interprets it differently, that's fine, but that doesn't overwrite or invalidate the artist's intention or their own labeling. To wrap up, if artists' weren't the only and last ones to define their art then critics would have no place to stand - see the bad rock good jazz argument - fantano goes into a self described rap album and reviews it on the merits of its self describeness to the other work that has the same self described label. If someone calls it fart rap then enjoy it as such, maybe it's a stinker, or maybe it straight steamy fire

@@BigOwl51what do you think language is for the millionth time? Who do you think comes up with these genres? It’s for the purpose of convenience, periodization and understanding, not just your arbitrary feelings. The point is to communicate, and you could argue fart rap would be unsuccessful at that, and if we holistically agree, then it becomes defunct in terms of communication. Genres don’t exist, categories don’t exist; none of these things are tangible, they’re ways of addressing tangible things.

(1793 painting titled “Death of Marat” by Jacques-Louis David, Marat was a friend of David and an influential figure during the French Revolution. He had a sever skin condition which led him to soaking in oatmeal baths while he did his writing. During one of those baths he was stabbed to death by the widow of a man who had been beheaded during the revolution. I don’t remember if Marat was part of the Jacobins however. )

In response to the tweet (which if not intended bait, in spirit it most certainly is) and the ideas of genres in general: Genres are things for us consumers of music, they’re meant to be a sort of sign post that indicates that this album falls, within some perspective, into this certain category (due to its sound, historical context, lyrics, etc). Although it can be a bit vertigo-inducing if you just stare at this absolute skyscraper of genres, that a site like RYM can be, it’s also mostly an extremely comforting thing when you listen to an album, love it, go to RYM, see a genre that defines some of the main contributing factors in you liking the album, and then exploring said genre’s albums. It’s a hell of a treat. So yeah, there’s a lot of genres and they’re certainly not perfect, but their purpose is there and it’s great, i like it quite a bit

It’s still good music, it’s just sometimes sub-genres are getting their particulars ironed out, or the genre became more defined as time went on. Like seriously, if you listen to shoegaze for any amount of time past the greats, get ready to hear a lot of grunge riffs and vocals.

It's funny because Lush often gets lumped with shoegaze, and Miki Berenyi said in an interview that she didn't think the band really fell in that category. Recall a lot of discussions about how to categorize bands in the 90, especially bands like Tortoise. Then there was Freak Folk. I imagine a lot times it's easier for other people to have to think about.

Jesu mentioned Also doomgaze is a genre, there are good artists there like Remina and the latest Pallbearer Deathgaze is something that will probably be more developed in a few years
