As a culinary graduate that “cooking has no rules” made me cackle a little because my former culinary professors would beg to differ. Cooking and baking is a science as much as it is an art form. It’s similar to makeup in many ways. You learn the rules so you can learn how to break them in ways that are creative.

Just as someone who is a fine artist, there’s no “rules” in creativity, but there is a set of general practices that are rules in fine art. I.e. you can paint oils over acrylics, but not acrylics on top of oils. Perhaps “the art of makeup” doesn’t have limitations but you have to know what to do with the materials to access your creativity in makeup first before you start!

I had to look up why acrylic over oil is a no-no, and it’s because the acrylic will flake right off, apparently-which is a good example of a rule that exists to literally keep your art from being ruined!! There are absolutely rules like that in makeup too, makeup theory doesn’t exist to stifle creativity, but to tell us how to use the tools we are given to create bomb-ass looks. It’s built on chemistry, biology, psychology-things we can’t change and must learn to work with.

Love what you say about makeup theory. I do watercolour painting. Lots of people hate painting with watercolour bc they only remember the paints they used as kids and never learned how to use it properly. If you don’t know the “rules” to watercolour painting, you make a muddy mess. I had to learn about colour mixing, water control and proper techniques to improve as a painter. So many people say “art has no rules! Do what you want!” but learning the rules helps sooo much. Plus, once you learn a rule, if you decide you don’t like it and it doesn’t work for you, you can break the rule! It does you no harm to learn about it in the end.

I really love the analogy to cooking chicken, because it reminds me of an Indonesian guy who was teaching me to make satay. He mentioned how most of the Westerners he teaches hate dry chicken, but to him it wasn't that much of a big deal. Preference varies with culture - just like whether you care about your chicken being dry, you might not mind your face looking round; but it's important to know that cooking chicken for a long time will make it dry, just like your blush position will change the shape of your face.

Baking more so because of the chemistry of how things work together to make a delicious product. I have you to thank about using eye cream before applying concealer. I would get lines and crepey looking under-eyes after several hours of wear. Now it's lovely and magic and thank you for the tip! Also, that girl should have just bought her mom new brushes..🤢 lol

About concealer placement and „new technique”: when I see people smearing the same amount of product as they use before in triangle shape but now placing it in two massive dots and stripes from outer corners to almost hairline (using a high coverage concealer) I wonder, is there any difference? 😂 It’s still too much product under your eyes.

Yeah I think people don't realize that the more feathery, minimal application IS the technique. The shape of where you put it is, in my humblest of opinions, less important than knowing how much goo you need on your face-flesh. If you put too much goo on the flesh it doesn't matter where you put it or what shape it's in, it's too much goo.

Yes! I use this technique to cover the dark lines under my eyes so when I accidentally use too much it ruins the whole point of the technique. It becomes too thick and also I end up having to spread it out much further than I wanted to. And by putting it everywhere under the eye I don’t get the effect of lifting that particular shadow area.

@@Captain_Pink exactly. I have big undereye circles and I’ve never liked high coverage concealer. Even a tiny dot of tarte’s shape tape looked bad. But two dots technique is good for me because I have visible veins on the outer part of my undereye area and it give me a bit of freshness. But still, I use tiny amount only to cover, not to give myself a lifting 😅

Your concealer technique literally changed how I use makeup. I thought I couldn't use concealer under my eyes at all, and now I at least feel comfortable using it for special occasions (still too lazy day to day, but that's a different story). The amount she uses is better for me, and I think I'll have to try applying it with a brush rather than the applicator, but your technique itself is still solid (and immeasurably better than the dreaded triangle). HOLY GOD THOSE BRUSHES 😱☠️

What I saw happen was that people would use the two spots of concealer method but they were smearing WAY too much product on those two areas right off the concealer wand. The whole point of your technique was to use LESS product. If you still use too much product on your eye it doesn't matter where you put it. I always put some product on the back of my hand and pick up a little with my brush, the wands just have too much product on it to apply it directly to my skin.

I watched the First Lady do’s and don’t which was the way I was doing the contour and blush, then I watch Robert and is the same and I followed it, made a MASSIVE difference. Seeing it side by side by this lady really showed how effective the placement and I’m so glad for Roberts advice and this lady proved it even more. I did take in consideration my face shape as this does not necessarily apply to all (as advised by Robert as well) but to my face shape it did.

i too would love a chronic illness skin change video, unfortunately, most people don't know how it changes or even that we experience a change, i have SO much inflammation and chronic pain and stress on my body PLUS just stress, meds, etc.... has led to so much, one thing I've noticed is, HUGE pores, but dry and ALWAYS peeling, esp nose.... discoloration and texture... i used to complain about my skin before i was sick, but omg i was so dumb, my skin was perfect and i was just insecure and dumb

I recently tried Sigma eye shadow base and eye shadow, because of you. I love them both. My eye shadow was sliding around and disappearing. Many shadow base products make my eyes irritated, but not this. Thank you so much!

First thing: I'm 35 and from few years I have huge problem of cacke under the eyes so this is life saving. Second thing: As less and zero waste person I love that I actually can use just tiny amount of the product. I've always been good at eyeshadow, liner and mascara part but was mediocre at best in all the rest. Skin care was non existant for me, for example. You're videos really help me and opened my eyes to the importance of routins and techniques. Thank you Robert ❤!

Oh my please share the tutorial on the eye makeup you're wearing today. Absolutely gorgeous!! I love the tips for over 40 because it absolutely changes how it goes on once you start getting wrinkles or more loose eyelid skin

I have a degree in music and I think the situation is similar! A lot of musicians have no training and that is totally fine. They’re perfectly able to make amazing music! But I think it’s so much easier to break the rules once you know what they are! And understanding music theory makes it much easier to make beautiful things and share them with other people. That doesn’t mean there can’t still be creativity and artistry. I really appreciate understanding WHY certain techniques work best, and I think that’s why your channel is my favorite.

I think when the more popular KZbinrs or influencers do something… it is a given for most people. I think all makeup tutorials should include video in real light inside and outside to REALLY see how it looks. With no filter period. Lol

Fr your channel is the reason I don't need to go on youtube and seek out a makeup tutorial every time I want to go out. I just have a better understanding of what I'm doing and why and now I can do perfectly fine looks on my own every time without needing to bring over my laptop and a tutorial to the mirror 😂😂

I definitely have darkness in different areas and have the heart shaped width issue, so I don't do your recommended concealer technique but I still love trying it and seeing the trend stay from such heavy central applications on KZbin. Knowing fundamentals is so helpful.

The thing with the 'lifting face concealer' trick is that it just exaggerates the lines. Especially lines in the outer cornor of your eyes. Putting concealer directly there just adds to the appearance of wrinkles near the eyes
