I am seeing more and more people become way to complacent when travelling here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil so I decided to do a calm rant about this topic.

No, he has been for almost 2 years in Brazil, first only travelling and after living in Rio as a digital nomad. Considering that he has had contact with a lot of unknown people travelling around the country, shown in his videos, having problems twice is not bad. And I'm not saying this because I am Brazilian.

@@nickmusttravel, yes, it's possible, but some things were not well explained. You lived in Copacabana and you know that the buildings there in general have a person working at the entrance and even cameras. So, he would have to say that it was not the case of his building or the "porteiro" (doorman) was sleeping to let unkown people leave the place with a lot of things (his drone, PC etc.). Better wait his new explanations in another video.

What people need to understand is that you should not act the same way you do back at home in other countries that don’t have security issues; you can’t go out on streets with valuable stuffs showing up, you need to know the places before you go to see if they are safe for that time and things like that; don’t trust people that you just got to know and don’t drink anything given by strangers; if you take the right precautions, the chances to have a bad experience are very low

Yeah Thanks for the tips. I see it all the time. I can usually spot people like that.. most of the time New Travelers are like in LaLaLand and really don t pay attention. You are right. The safety issue is more pronounced in Colombia. I bet you can find a Colombian Expat forum where every week if not every other day there is an ex-pat that has been drogued and got their stuff stolen. By the way, nice lens. I like the bokeh effect. what lens and camera is that? are you still shooting with the dji pocket?

Black Circle, I think that Germany and Sweden don't have Carnival... There are small countries or with less social inequalities where thefts etc. are less likely to happen, but in big events where people come from all over, everyone should be more prudent. I often see tourists during the Carnival even with small backpack bags with objects easy to be taken or in the back pocket of the pants. And I always think: how can someone be naive in a big city and inside a crowd?

I've watched his videos and love his channel but he does show too much of the "party" lifestyle in Brazil. For expats who want to do clubbing, get super-drunk and have crazy adventures, I would much rather recommend South East Asia for that. It's too risky in South America (especially Medellin and Rio). I don't drink much and love Brazil for all the other things it has to offer. It's more for expats with a more normal, laidback lifestyle.

Our media in Brazil is very sensacionalist, especially considering that Rio is home to the main TV networks and everything in the city is close and quick for audience. People are easily panicked because the often repetitions pass the idea of generalization. They don't check the official site of each Brazilian state with crime rates. On this website of Rio state we can notice that most crimes are smaller than supposed by the often TV images. There are even people profiting this bad fame to ask money. At the Center of Rio some people from neighboring countries asked me money saying they were "robbed", but clearly people without money... I only believe it can be true if the person shows a police report. I was in Cartagena de Indias in Colombia in 2019 and didn't feel unsafe there. I always check everything before travelling in official sites and not by the media, because they can show only what they want and is more convenient.
@nickmusttravel
@nickmusttravel Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Sensationalism sells more than the truth does. I don't feel very unsafe in Rio now that I know what to watch out for and speaking Portuguese also goes a long way into defending yourself verbally.

@@nickmusttravel, yes, and even if you don't speak anything people can think you are Brazilian because of your features (Portuguese descent). But except in the South of Brazil where there is a large concentration of people of northern European descent, blonde and very white people are almost automatically seen as "gringos" (foreigners) in Rio. Even the tanned ones (after sometime living in Rio) can be seen as foreigners at first sight, but some are Brazilians from other regions and a few ones, "cariocas da gema".

@@nickmusttravel, yes, the acccent always betrays foreigners, especially those who speak English or Spanish because these languages do not have nasal sounds like Portuguese. Mixed people (black and white) always pass for Brazilians, especially in Rio. There is a channel of an American couple who live in Rio (he is white and she is mixed). Their videos are in English and although her accent is totally American (Idaho), there is always a Brazilian asking if she is from Brazil. She probably also feel at home until she speaks something... Their 5 kids speak already Portuguese almost without any accent. It's easier for children.

He did not show a police report yet... In case it's true, by the behaviour that he has shown in his videos, it's more probable that we was naive to take unknown people to his apartment, where they put sleeping pills in his drink. The scam called "boa noite Cinderela" (good night, Cinderella) is not common in our media and the cases reported in general involved prostitutes (men or women) who approach men or homosexuals by the internet etc. and were taken to the victim's home or other place.
