LET YOUR ANKLE REST (especially after immediate sprain just sit even if you're in the middle of the field or in a busy highway just let your ankle REST, it'll save you a lot of pain).

@@miltones81 sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, it depends on your age, but if your ankle feels weaker you can always go to a physiotherapist and exercise to strengthen your ankles. Ice impedes the process of inflammation which is necessary to the healing process. However, if there is a lot of pain or swelling, ice can help to relieve these symptoms. Ice is great for the first 24 hours after injury to prevent further exacerbation of injury, but after that switch to heat, gentle stretching and range of motion, and light strengthening and you'll recover much faster. @kyoka7047
@kyoka7047 11 ай бұрын
@@fcb376 Nah depending on the severity 1 month is to soon, tbh in my case after 3 months my ankle was still a little swollen and i was feeling pain in the end motion of inversion (prob the move that you find yourself when you sprained = plantar flexion + inversion, btw this stress mainly the anterior talofibular ligament, and ligaments take a good time to recover, not that much) About the rare pain, maybe its due to 1. The ligament is not fully recovered yet, but you would feel just in a move that stress the ligament or 2. The nociceptors are still a little sensitive. Those are the two options i can think atm, so all it prob needs is time. To recover faster there isnt a lot of things you can do tbh, in physioterapy there are some resources like deep heat they use to speed the recovery time and make it easier to do exercises by hypoalgesia, but this is def not a must, just speed a little bit. So i would say to you get the range of motion of your dorsiflexion back by stretching (4x30sec at least 5 times a week, 5-10min of stretching a week is fair enough), strenghten the muscles that support your ankles and do movements in all planes as tolerable (and please dont neglect the inversion, remember it will be prob the most committed, but dont push to pain, just a little discomfort) and do some sensorimotor training to get back your balance and motor response, very important to prevent another injury and make you feel safer (you also can do in series like 3x30sec trying to balance in one feet and progressing to dynamic movements with caution if you need it).

I had an inversion sprain 2 years ago. I would actually try to move my ankle in the same way that I hurt it. I’d do slow ankle rolls, or just move it into an inversion position like how I injured it. The pain threshold kept moving further and further away until it was gone, and I recovered in about a week. Icing combined with light movement is the best way to recover Edit: also, don’t move it a lot right away. Rest is very important in the first couple days of a sprain. I would only move my ankle to the point that it would hurt a little and no further

I find icing really helpful immediately after the incident to treat the pain and stop some swelling through vasoconstricion and therefore less diffusion into the surrounding tissue. After that short period everything being said applies. Lymphatic drainage, blood flow (movement)

@@PooooLsharK man thanks for reply, I would love to be in touch with you via this comment section. So I woke up today (10 hours after the strain and walking causes pretty serious pain, o believe it’s cuz of swelling) I’ve been sleeping with my ankle up, used gel and ice before the sleep. So, is it normal that a day or two after the injury the pain is getting more serious than after initial injury moment? I like to believe it’s cuz of the swelling and it’s body s way to heal itself. Going to see a doctor in couple hours. What was your experience in terms of pain a day or two after your injury? Was it most painful in the beginning?

@@Wolf_runner12 It sounds what i assume was a classic supination trauma? So yes, the pain (dolor) will start setting in when the inflammation gets going - calor dolor rubor tumor. Lots of runners will even finnish their run after the trauma with almost no pain. If it does not get better after 2-3 days a visit to the doc is advised but since you've already got an appointment he/she will hopefully tell you everything looks normal and you're good to go with light walking and rest periods if the pain increases.

Fun fact, the lymphatic system is - for lack of a better term - hydrodynamically passive. The system is not “activated” to pull fluid out of interstitial and extra cellular spaces. Instead it functions like a pump and lock system like canals. The pumping action of contracting muscles squeezes the interstitial spaces driving excess fluid into microscopic lymphatic ducts. These ducts have back flow valves that prevent draining once the fill. The lymph then continues to be PUSHED out of different spaces, through the duct and to the nearest lymphnode

I feel you are going too far in opposing the principles of RICE ( not saying that it’s the best way) . But Rest is a legit thing and is needed when your ankle is actually injured there are no shortcuts to an injury the kot ideas are not for injured parts but for immobility caused over time.

Also biofreeze or icy hot or whatever you use. Good stuff. Other than the walking to and from classes, I stretched it and stuff. And I’ve been moving my foot up and down exercising it sorta… Today is better I noticed the sore spot went down . Still there but guess one / two more days. It's good advice but if pain is an indicator of how much someone can move their ankle, then speaking from (current 😔) experience I cant move my foot at all. Motion is medicine but pain can limit motion. Maybe icing your ankle in its most painful spots AS it's moving can be a good place to start?

I think I have early stages of this. I am a skateboarder, so it is only going to get worse i think. Ice every night, it DOES reduce the swelling for the next day. Would you say you don’t do any RICE at all? What I learned is that RICE is fine in acute situations, immediately post-injury. But you shouldn’t do it for long and definitely not the next day. Basically if the acute pain has gone down you need to start moving. Are you advocating for no RICE immediately post-injury?

I have sprained my ankles so many times I can’t keep count, but one time I was playing football, sprained my ankle and I just carried on playing and then to my surprise it was ok, I was expecting more swelling and pain after I stopped but it never happened, a bit of discomfort that was it. although it depends on the severity and sometimes a sprain can hurt as much as breaking the damn thing and it’s not a good idea to keep running after you just fractured your ankle so you have to make a decision on the spot

@@Jovahnriel gonna be 2 weeks since injury tomorrow. All I did was rested applied healing gels and done 3 physiotherapy. The swelling s gone pretty quick, but I still feel pain when moving ankle sideways. Yes. These comments are full of people who think "moving within the pain-free range" means walking on it. NO, do that while resting (e.g. seated or in bed or whatever). I have found that any activity that increases blood flow is helpful, just as gentle massaging and zero-resistance movement.

I mentioned this suggestion to my doctor and he laughed. If you have torn ligaments, this motion is not going to help. And if you are icing, I think any motion will hurt.

I just sprained my ankle the 2nd time but on my left. Not as severe as the first time I got it but it’s still bad. Based on what this video is about, I was wondering if outside walking is a good idea to help recover faster or should I lay of the walks and just do ankle exercises? Because I love sports and exercise so much, I couldn’t resist walking my daily 5km after 4 days from my initial sprain. From what I knew, I shouldn’t be performing any activities like walking, but this video made me question if it’s more beneficial to move my ankles more for faster recovery

dude if you move a sprained ankle you will prevent healing of an injured ligament, ice only prevents excessive swelling which itself helps with pain control, now i concur that don't ice like a mad lad but i won't say "stop icing your ankle" rather rest elevation and icing and early ROM as tolerated..
