I don't want to quibble with you too much, James, 'cause you know I love your work, but I don't think we should assume that skincare companies are always good faith actors. Some are perfectly willing to include bullshit, useless, and potentially irritating ingredients because they're trendy without much concern about the end user. Liah Yoo's thoughtfulness is the exception in the industry, not the rule. Hearing from a formulator who was removed from a project because he questioned a major client's demand to include certain dubious ingredients reminded me that their top priority is making money. Edit - I am *NOT* talking about silicones, alcohol, parabens and other proven safe ingredients. Brands are just as guilty for allowing them to be demonized as they are for jumping on the bullshit, "all natural" hype train.

James is the first ever influencer I heard who acknowledged that looking at ingredients list staight up isn't giving a full story. I'm not sure how much major flack this video going to attract from stans of major influencers. THIS!! I hate how now that skincare has kinda broken into its own niche on youtube, the attitude went from "oh this product is great because it works for me" to nitpicking about the ingredients. While obviously it's great that we are becoming more informed and learning about what we're putting on our faces is not a bad thing, it becomes a problem when people completely disregard/discredit the experts who actually KNOW what they're talking about and have dedicated so much of their life to studying and researching - it's incredibly disrespectful and straight up arrogant and naive on the consumers' end! It's important to remember we don't know everything.

Hey James, although I agree that an ingredient shouldn’t be demonized, you can’t deny that the order in which ingredients come in an INCI list will make the difference about a product...it’s good to trust formulations and brands, it’s also good to learn how to read an ingredient list and recognize when a product is likely to do what it says it will do... just wanted to put it here because I refuse to think that educating myself to choose products that have better chance to fit me is a mistake. While I think that all of these are good points, I would say that there is one major caveat when it comes to trusting a company - this really only applies to companies with a good reputation. You should absolutely be skeptical of new companies no one has ever heard of marketing their products only on IG and have few to no sales/reviews, etc. There is balance, as with all things ^-^

I think the problem with the whole "don't buy from third party sellers" is it's all well and good when you live in America/Canada, but when you live in places like Australia no one is interested in selling to us! we have no choice. Like for instance Krave beauty, I can't find or afford a forwarding service and despite having a whole product named after one of our reefs they don't even ship to us! Most of what I buy is through a third party seller because legitimate businesses don't care about our business! I pay so much in conversions and shipping as it is and I'm frankly sick of it 😔 Thanks for coming to my Rant™

Exactly! Sometimes it's easy for them to say this because they live in countries when you have different options, and if you can't get product A, you can get product B and problem solved. For instance I live in Colombia-Latin America (And overall great part of Latin America struggles with this). And here you can't find ANYTHING, no TO, no Krave Beauty, no CeraVe, no InkeyList, etc. You either stick to third party sellers or neutrogena's make up wipes. So yeah, kind of hard to have a good skin care routine if it's not buying products from these 3rd party sellers.

The order of ingredients listed is another misconception. Unless the percentage is stated as an active ingredient, companies can list ingredients present in a concentration of 1% or less in any order they want. Something could be 80% water and it would be listed first, but then the next 20 "natural" ingredients listed afterwards could be in any order. You could have something that's only 0.01% listed first ahead of something that is actually 1%. And a low percentage doesn't necessarily mean something is ineffective. Clobetasol is an incredibly potent steroid and you only need 0.05% for it to be effective, comparatively to hydrocortisone at 2.5% which is still weaker than the clobetasol.

I love beautiful fancy packaging, but that doesn't make me buy it or not make me by it. I try products, if they do what I want, I will buy them again. And, *just because an ingredient doesn't have clincial research behind it, doesn't mean it doesn't work* . Real Clinical Research Trials costs millions of dollars and can take years to get approval, and it doesn't mean they can be used in cosmetics since the FDA does not oversee cosmetics. Most companies, especially small ones, could never afford these studies. There is so much more to this, but I'll leave it here. Take care, Ginny 😘😘😘

Unless you are a chemist, or you are allergic to a specific ingredient, you need to try a product to know how it will work. I get so tried of people on KZbin making recommendations on products based on the ingredient list even though they have never used the product. That product they think may be great, may actually be crap, but they never tried it and don’t know. It can still be a useful term in the sense that they are saying that the ingredients in the product aren’t proven to be comedogenic. I’m very acne prone and still look up the ingredients of my moisturizers on the comedogenic scale to get an idea if the product might cause me a problem. The term can still prove helpful!

i know a lot of people complain about revolution about how they copy things a lot but honestly i’ve gotten to the place where i think it’s a good thing?? i like the fact that if someone who is strapped on money is really jonesing for a certain eyeshadow palette but can’t afford it, revolution might have a palette with a similar color story that’s more than half off what the original might be. and like you just mentioned yourself james, some united states based skincare and makeup companies might not be in certain countries... but revolution is! i understand why creators would complain (i’m thinking of kat von d specifically) when their ideas are ripped off but to play devil’s advocate... maybe you should have made your products affordable to everyone in the first place?

As a pharmacist i’m glad you are talking about the cake theory! Cosmetics should use that freedom of making those pretty packaging. In the pharmaceutical industry in many countries you may not make prescribtion meds too pretty or too tasty! It is medicine not something fun like skincare... So make these skincare/cosmetics fun I would say! About the niacinamide.... that should be the same quality since They have to follow the GMP (good manufacuring practice) but that is actually the case for natural derived components, like plant extracts. Every plant is different since it grows on different soil etc etc. I love your videos James! Keep it up, looking forward to them popping up on my phone! PS Dutch autocorrect is sabotaging me

I agree with you to an extent about formulations James but since Dr Vanita Rattan has been on KZbin it has been a total game changer for me and many others with skin of colour. She is a dermatologist and a formulator so she really knows her stuff! She has a video on debunking the myths about parabens and also about silicones but she also explains what fragrance and denatured alcohol can do to our skin! Highly recommend giving her a watch 😊
@JamesWelsh

Heyyyy! I have watched her! She’s one of my faves for sure! She’s actually not a dermatologist but is a dr and formulator ☺️ but I also try to get information from a wide range of people. And after seeing other cosmetic formulators, cosmetic chemists, science educators etc talk about fragrance and alcohol, I sway in the other direction haha. Michelle Wong has ana maxing post about alcohol in skincare sharing the research and evidence behind its effects and how it interacts with our skin. And whilst the irritation to fragrance is very valid and true, it’s also very rare. I talk about Michelle mainly as she always takes POC into consideration

Hi ! Thank you for this video ! It's very interesting to hear someone challenge these skincare myths. Although I have some thoughts about what you said : 1. I agree with the fact that an ingredient list doesn't tell the whole story, and that the formulation is important as well (I have used products with "controversial" ingredients, and never had a problem with them, although I must mention my skin isn't very sensitive and can take some "hits"). However, not every brand has your best interest at heart ; I don't think brands like L'Oreal are as mindful with their formulations as others like Krave Beauty. A lot of brands' goal is to make as much money as possible. And while they won't formulate a product so badly it will make your skin melt off, I don't think every product out there has the best formulation it could, because a) it takes time to well formulate a product and these brands want to put out as much products as they can, b) it costs money, and these brands would rather sell a poorly formulated product with a good price-quality ratio than a good one that doesn't bring much cash. So while I won't put back on the shelf a product that contains denatured alcohol or parabens, it I see they're on the top of the ingredients list, I'm more likely to believe it won't do much for my skin (or in the worst case scenario aggravates it), and that the brand is in it for the money. 2. I completely agree with you on being mindful with third-places retailers. I never buy skincare from Amazon or Ebay because not only it's often way more expensive than the original price or, even worse, it's counterfeit made by people who literally don't give two shits about you. A lot of people have reported injuries from products like the red peeling from The Ordinary, but it's likely they just bought counterfeits with very bad formulations. So stay safe guys, don't buy skincare there ! 3. Not so much a thought as a question : where do you buy your Krave Beauty ? I live in France and not only they don't ship here, but there also no retailer who does. Could you share yours ? Thanks ! Bye !

My ride or die toner is one of those giant bottle, insane value for money, Japanese "lotions," and alcohol is the second ingredient. In fact, most of these large Japanese toners have alcohol high on the list because it's accompanied by lots of hydrating ingredients. It's also crazy humid here, so products need to be able to dry down quickly.

When I first tried the Matcha Hemp Cleanser from Krave Beauty, my skin really loved the feel and consistency of the cleanser. This time when I purchased it from a different website, I noticed first the price was twice as expensive and it left my skin with that "squeaky clean" feel which wasn't the case the first time. Thanks for informing us on this. It makes sense now 😇

I feel the same way about cerave. I've been using their daily moisturizer and just don't enjoy the process of using the product because the packaging is so bland (also find that it dries down fairly quick unless I apply a huge amount of it). Obviously having a good product is the most important, but for me a large part of the sensorial experience of skincare is also in the packaging

I saw a snap story memory from 3 years ago. Im 21 now and realized how even then i would get little acne spots but my skin was much better back then, than now. :( now im feeling stupid for spending money on skincare products. But when i tried to just use cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen in the am, i still get red bumps and acne. Especially right now with maskne. I change it every time i can but where i work i sweat a lot so i try washing my face with water. Im currently using the •cerave foaming cleanser at night and just washing my face in the morning with water only •cerave moisturizing cream at night and iunik centella gel cream in the day •Paula’s choice SA bha at night or the cosrx bha •Paula’s choice aha as well and the paula’s choice 10% azelaic acid Im just gonna stop using those actives for now. Or maybe use only one at night instead of all 3. Either way even before i started using them i still had red bumps and acne. I have some painful red bumps. One turned into the white pimple head type and i popped it but it still hurts. I also think theres another one thats gonna come out soon. I just feel like im starting to hate skincare instead of loving it. 💔💔💔💔💔💔

Our philosophies are pretty much aligned for the most part and definitely agree with you that ingredients aren’t as simple as ingredient isolation; however As someone who purchased a gazillion products - denatured alcohol and fragrance truly aren’t best for those with with fragile skin barriers ie acne prone skin - and denatured alcohol definitely dries your skin out if it’s top ingredient - This is where we often break away because fragrance is definitely sensitizing over time and denatured alcohol is not the best for all skin types- it’s an ingredient you have to pay attention to - so I dropped all of them and skin has been glowing along with no breakouts .... I tell everyone with skin issues to try it for 30 days no drying alcohols fragrance and or essentials oils just to see if there is a change and always there are small improvements that get better over time. And Fenty skin is horrible lol love her but yeah it’s a no lol

Buying products from unofficial retailers is what i always do :)) there are many precautionary measures but in Vietnam its ike the only choice... Tips for those who wants to try: *Buy from small sellers *They must reply to inbox frequently (>85% minimum) *All of their products come from fixed sources (eg. all Japanese, all korean, NOT from all over the world :)) *NO CHINESE PRODUCT IN THEIR STORE (that includes maycreate, lameila, etc.) *Buy less popular brands/products (that exludes most TO, Cerave products depends on where you live) *Check comments from other products as well, if there are some other fake products in the store, the one your buying might as well be

Hi James, I have a question for you. Do you ever plan on doing "skin care for dummies" video? I'm almost 30 and, while i enjoy your content, I still don't understand a lot of things (and googling them gives a bunch of opposite informations). I've ALWAYS treated my skin as oily and always had problems with it, but recently my sister said to me that i might have dry skin - to my surprise I really do. And I'm lost in how to treat my skin after that many years of drying it out with cosmetics for wrong type. Also i need to say that my daily skin routine is just washing my face and putting moisturiser on it, i use sunscreen if needed and i don't wear make up. I just never took good care of my face and now i don't know how to start.

I'm so glad you mentioned not judging the ingredient list. I get so riled up when just random people on the comment sections go along talking about things like this is so unnecessary. Are you a cosmetic scientist? No. You heard something from someone who heard something from someone and so on. Maybe don't be so confident that you know more than someone who's been trained in cosmetic science.
