The best way to hit a new max after a plateau is micro loading. I went from benching 225x20 reps to 250x 20 reps in 10 weeks this way, adding 1 pound each bench day. I figured my chest would never notice the difference between 225 and 226 so why not? It worked like a dream. My max went from 300 to 340.

Alan I don't think that makes much sense. Do you have reason to suspect that micro plates are any more or less accurate per-pound than non-micro plates? Probably not. You're still going to have some variance above and below the total weight, but that would be true whether you use micro plates or not. Micros will still increase the mean, just as any other plates will.
@Pierrot110194
@Pierrot110194 5 жыл бұрын
You're right, however this does not apply to a real life scenario, in which a lifter wants to keep track of his progression. You want to know for each session whether you're getting stronger or not. However, if the standard deviation of the bigger plates is already as great as shown in the video, you could have already lifted more the session before you started using micro plates. Similarily, you could have lifted significantly less (maybe as much as five pounds) the session before you started using micro plates, which in turn also renders them completely insignificant because the deviation of the plates was already larger than the total weight of the micro plates. In order to approach a mean value with a great standard deviation, you would have to use the same weight in different compositions for many sessions, which would translate to using the same weight for many, many weeks. This will probably not be happening if you're not lacking in anything else, which should be adressed before you start using micro plates. You'd have to be a VERY experienced lifter and maxed pretty much out for the micro plates to make sense.

I dont like adding those small plates, hard to find throughout the gym too, i just try to completely dominate the weight im on, then, on the next session, add a 10 pound plate on each side, im probably gonna do less reps, but i work with that a few sessions until i can completely dominate that weight, then add 10 more on each side and do the same, after a few sessions, replace the two 10 pound plates on each side with a 25 pound plate on each side

The cheap manufacturers just pour some iron in a mould, paint it, and let it go. The calibrated plates are poured slightly heavy, (stamped or forged) and then they weigh, and grind off excess, then when its right, they paint or coat them, then send it out. That attention to detail makes them a premium product. Also more expensive.

I'm not like that, personally. I prefer to stick with a certain weight for 2, 3, or even 4 weeks, and I aim to increase my volume over time to some realistic goal - say, increasing a 3x5 to a 5x5. So for week 1, I do a 3x5 at a certain weight (maybe it's about 75% of my 1 rep max). For week 2, I decide to do a 4x4, which allows me to get slightly more volume over 1 extra set. Perhaps for week 3, I complete a 5x4. Finally by week 4, I do a 5x5 at that same weight, which was my intended goal. Since I've spent 4 weeks at this weight, it makes more sense for me to jump 5-10 lb and rinse, lather, repeat. I'm not trying to say microloading doesn't work, but I agree with Alan that it isn't necessary.

Those new plates look slick. Btw, bad argument against micro plate loading. Saying that you can't add microplates because of variance is a position not well thought out in my opinion. Yes, the weight will probably vary, but what does adding a microplate do to hurt it? In the case of it being exact, and by it I mean the weight without the microplate, great, target hit. In the case of it not being exact, then regardless of the microplate, you're not going to hit it? But you can make this argument for just regular plates, just replace every time I said microplate with just plate and it stays consistent.
@obits3

TheGreatslyfer - Yes, I just made the same argument. Avoiding micro plates makes the problem much worse. Micro plates tighten up the range of variability.

There are no rules with weight loading and now you're implying there's a "5 lb rule". I know you don't mean to be doing that and you're just expressing your opinion (you even said it), but now 500 bros out there are gonna tell 3,000 bruhs out there that loading less than 5 lbs is useless (because it's a bro rule). I do use the same plates and bars consistently and plan to use microplates on my presses when the time comes. No I'm not going up .25 lb every session but there's nothing wrong with going from 5 to 2.5 increases IF IT WORKS FOR A WHILE LONGER.

I just hate these appeal to starting strength statements ...because its proven for such a LONG time that starting strength has nothing to do with reality and just hits some good point "on accident" Its not based on solid research but on the ranting of some murrican elitist everything else you talk about is just off topic here because nobody said anything against that if you draw from what alan and you just said it just means in conclusion that this video was worthless ...you can and should, and have to microload at some point just be aware of the variables

I don't know what drugs you people are on but I didn't just pull the idea of microloading out of my ass one day, SS mentions it and said to invest in a set of microplates ASAP. So I did, and I will use them reasonably when the time comes.

Micro-loading makes sense when you use the same plates (accurate or not becomes IRRELEVANT) each time. At my local gym, I MARKED the plates I was using, very subtly (black on black). So, I knew I was adding to a stable value. Having said that, there are other ways to make a micro-jump: add a rep. Reduce a rest. Add a normal plate and pause between reps. There are numerous ways to manipulate your experience. BUT, at those times when you want to just nudge yourself a little higher in absolute weight: mark your big plates and use the micro. It lets you add a small amount MORE OFTEN than with bigger plates.
@zip34ut
@zip34ut 7 жыл бұрын
Well then what the hell do you do if you want to progress from 45 kg-47.5 kg and end up failing the desired rep range multiple times?. Telling me that im not a novice anymore would be innacurate. Therefore I do not agree with you on that microloading is ineffecctive. If i were to progress with 5 lbs every single workout for 6 months I would be breaking world records, and since we know that for most people Linear progression lasts for about a year, I hold the belief that microloading for exercises such as the bench press BB row and OHP is very good. When I followed your advice on increasing 5 lbs every workout I couldnt break through a 45 kg x 5 reps OHP, I think that it will be way easier progressing with microplates.
@lkae4
@lkae4 7 жыл бұрын
How about drop the weight and increase the reps? I'm sure if you could do 3x20 with 40, 5x5 with 50 would be guaranteed. Just because you're a novice doesn't mean all non-novice programming is forbidden.

I use 1.25 lb "micro" plates, so I can adjust by 2.5 lbs. and it works great. I found going 5 lbs. a lift was just too much for me. I have my own "home gym" and I don't have a lot of plates, so I use the same plates every time. If I add 2.5 lbs on, I know I'm adding 2.5 lbs to the lift every time.

Respectfully disagree about micro loading. *opens dusty old book* And Uncle Rip said, "Thou shalt do reps of five, and five shall be the number of reps performed." Without micro-loading, we're looking at rotating rep ranges to get that next 5 pound jump--maybe going 3-5 reps or 5-8 reps. No longer reps of five. Small plates are also helpful for masters and female athletes. And when combined with Calibrated Plates (oh yeah!), they are a potent tool.

I applaud you for buying plates from Craigslist. That's the way I built my home gym. Over the years I've acquired 24x45lb plates. There are 2 Weider 44lb plates in the mix. Weigh them on a digital scale when I get them then mark them. All but 2 are between 44-46lbs. One of the Wieders is 46.6 and one of the others weighed 46.4lbs. My scale is supposed to be accurate but who knows? Thanks for all the fun and informative vids. Best of luck with your gym. Hope you get some kind of tax write off on those painfully expensive new plates. Btw, I've only got 4x100lb plates. They don't seem to pop up on local Craigslist very often.

Okay, so just wondering: I'm only going lifting because it feels good and I figure that the overall health benefits outweigh just sitting around all day. Well, that and I guess that at least squatting, deadlifting, and pulling makes my job a bit easier. I'm not going for any kind of competition, I'm not too concerned about the actual numbers I'm moving (well, as long as it's not less than what I moved the last time), or anything like that - I just like the feeling of having completed a challenging session with Lord Barbell. Now, my question is: Do I actually need any kind of equipment like belts, or straps, or gloves, or chalk, or knee/joint wraps, or special weightlifting shoes - or is it OK that I just go in there in my t-shirt, shorts, and socks, and do my thing? For my kind of goals - just being reasonably strong and healthy, just countering the ravages of time, just getting that "Ooh yeah, I did something that felt challenging!"-feeling - do I actually need any of this (fairly expensive) stuff? ... Yeah, I was going to ask about the micro-plates, but that was before Thrall talked about that. That question was "But what if my very slight friend (she's only about 50 kgs, 160 cms top) wants to feel some progression on her lifts to keep motivated? Wouldn't micro-loads help her with that?"

Alan I'm stuck at 340 bench, about 425 squat and Deadlift. How do I leave novice land!?
@Anonymous-ld7je
@Anonymous-ld7je 7 жыл бұрын
Shawn Light is this a sarcastic post? Because unless you weigh like 275lbs+ then 340 is absolutely advanced on the bench press. If you weigh under 200 you're somewhat close to elite, even. Depending on your weight 425 is either well into intermediate or beginning of advanced on squat. 425 is respectably intermediate on deadlift. Don't let your perspective be skewed by all the world record lifts... All of those guys are both genetic freaks and on drugs. You aren't weak or a novice lifter, at all.
@ryanpetsche8924
@ryanpetsche8924 7 жыл бұрын
Shawn Light 340 bench is advanced land. Do 6 weeks of 10rep max squat/dead, 8rep max, 6 rep, 4,2,1 and you'll hit new maxes guaranteed. Just start at whatever you can just barely do at 10 reps and work up increasing weight decrease the rep every week. Lift like that 3x a week do w/e for bench, cause that's solid dude.

No sarcasm whatsoever. Thank you for the responses. I have been l'm 34, and 220 lbs. Been lifting on and off for like 15 years+. Bench is only touch and go. I can't seem to find a way to increase the weight anymore. I will definitely try some of those workouts! Thank you both!

Hey Alan, video idea for you. Perhaps a video just talking about differences between different types of barbells (the ones you have and other important ones to know) and difference between various types of plates and how they interact with the different barbells. And what strength sports and or movements the equipment is most often used for.

Alan, buying new plates for cosmetics is one thing but... If you had just weighed all the plates, matched them, and paired them with a rack (and a side), you could get balanced on both sides. This also solves the microloading problem. Moreover, proponents of micro-loading argue that it's more specific to strength and thus more effective for this goal... you would need to address this stance to be more convincing. Moreover - microloading an LP is way more straightforward than complex programming.
@mnikhk
@mnikhk 7 жыл бұрын
James Schaffer I think microloading in a commercial gym is a waste of time it may only work if they are either high end gym with Calibrated plates or your home gym where you know exact weight of all plates and you labeled them.

Alan, I'd like to tell you that the Barbell Brigade plates are cast and that makes them brittle and weak. They have a few of the same plates in my gym, metroflex arlington. Not all plates are cast iron, some of them based on appearance are forged and then finished on a lathe. That makes a massive difference in strength (less brittle, more likely to bend or deform rather than break) I'd watch out for that if I were y'all

Not convinced with your argument on microloading. Doesn't take into consideration type of Novice LP such as powerlifting to win's novice LP in which rate of progression is fairly fast and can't be done without the help of microplates. My previous 1rm's before using the PTW Novice LP was 85kg bench, 140kg squat and 160kg deadlift. With the help of PTW's novice program and Izzy's coaching, I was able to bench 95kg x 2, squat 132kg x 5 and deadlift 176kg x 3 at 66kg at the end of my novice program and this was about 5 months after I started the program. Might not be conclusive evidence as to why microloading works but this is just my own experience with using microplates.
@syed2694
@syed2694 7 жыл бұрын
It took you 5 months to increase your strength to that level from what it was before the novice program? I think time played more of a role than the microplates did lol, and a very minimal one at that, because your strength increase in the period of time mentioned is extremely subpar.

Syed Haque so what should the average strength increase be for a 66kg / 148lb novice given a 5 month time frame? Genuinely curious!
@syed2694
@syed2694 7 жыл бұрын
Nathaniel Soh deadlift should be at least 185x3, bench I can't say as people differ too much and your squat should at least be 145 for 5 as a top set.
@syed2694
@syed2694 7 жыл бұрын
first of all I apologise for being so rude in my first comment, but the point still stands that the increase was very subpar. As a novice, you should be adding at least 10kg a month to your squat and deadlift in both strength and hypertrophy blocks of your training regimen. Your problem may have been exercise selection, you seem to have plateaud fast so do variations and try to PR on those instead of the main lifts, but do practice the main lifts at least once a week.

My university gym has a bunch of different plates similar to Untamed Strength but we always use the small set of Troy iron plates or the Pendlay bumper plates for consistency despite whatever accuracy they are (your video proving their accuracy). Also those two brands of plates we use fit more snug on the bar. My point is we started using them out of consistency sake, and now you've showed me that we've also been accurate this entire time.

BurntBassMan it is illegal to market them as healthy. If a study measures baseline choleserol we always see an increace. Studyies try to hide this by not measuring them at baseline or taking individuals who already eat a lot of cholesterol. Many cardiologist are vegan and talk about dangers of egss. There is a reason for that. The egg industry knows that egss arent healhty and it is trying to cover that up. By paying studies etc. And then just market them as good protein, when in one egg there is like under 5g of protein.

You could probably calibrate your own plates with some welding and drilling. If a weight is too heavy, fasten it and drill a small indentation in it, reweigh and repeat. If one is too light, weld two small pieces of metal to it on both side of the center.

Not sure how my comment is "angry", I just don't care for that type of content, especially when the title implies a more purely informative type of video, similar to the content Alan usually puts up, which made me subscribe in the first place. If the main appeal of this channel for you is Alan's person and day-to-day activities, that's fine, but it's not what i'm here for, so it's only sensible that i would comment on an, in my opinion, unwanted development for the channel. Besides, I don't care if Alan makes vlogs, i can just simply not watch them, unless of course he makes a video with a title suggesting a to the point informative video, and then procedes to wrap the content that actually relates to the title in a bunch of non-relevant documentation of his daily life, it's simply not what I came here for. The reason my tone may have seemed harsh to some is due to the fact that this exact trend of having a title that lures people into watching ~15-20 minutes of content they didn't click in for, only to have the information pertaining to the title of the video hidden somewhere in between, is becoming more and more widespread on youtube, especially on these types of fitness channels, and it's just a huge waste of time, at least for me i find, almost as huge of a waste as taking the time to write out this comment, but hey, ya got me.

I agree. Alan's earlier videos has been pretty on point from start to finish, but they are starting to drag out. I don't mind VLOGs, I just don't want to see one when I click a video about micro loading. I find it better if a VLOG is in a VLOG video and these nuggets of information are in their own videos, without breakfast making and dog feeding and whatnot. It makes me less likely to watch the videos, and I assume he's doing this account because he wants people to see it. The VLOG style might bring in more viewers for all I know, but feedback can be useful either way.
