Interesting primer on robotic mowers, and the Gardena Sileno is a good budget pick if you don't want to stretch to the best mower on the market, which is the Husqkvarna robomower series. BUT there is a BIG caveat to this video: it's WAY more complicated than this video gives you the impression of. Almost all yards and lawns are more complex than shown here, with bushes, trees, paths and different zones. Laying the wire is definitely NOT child's play, and shouldn't be done by a child. The distance to the edge has to be precisely measured to prevent the mower falling off the edge, and be prepared to use three times (!) as many plugs (stakes) as they say in the instructions. Most lawns are quite uneven and you need a stake every 3" or so. Keep the wire taut during installation and fix it deep into the ground, to stop the mower blades from cutting the wire. The base station needs to be installed way more securely that shown in the video, and it needs to be firmly screwed down to the ground and not bent, uneven or even sloping a little. It can't go in a corner and you also need a third guide wire in the middle to show the mower the way home. Expect there to be a lot of teething problems to begin with, and you may well have to adjust the placement of the wire to stop your mower falling or getting stuck. Be prepared to spend some weeks learning your mower's behavior and adjusting the wire and settings until you get it right. Finally, you'll never be able to completely avoid mowing your lawn again because you still need to trim all the edges and spots the mower can't reach by hand with a trimmer. NEVER LET THE MOWER operate at night (as suggested in the video) as it will KILL HEDGEHOGS and other nocturnal wild animals who defend themselves by curling up in a ball instead of running away. Keep it to daylight hours only, and program the timer to cut a couple of hours after sunrise, to let the morning dew dry up first. The whole base station and mower must be moved indoors during the winter, and reinstalled in the spring. P.S. This comment is written from experience and installing this exact same mower.

We had gardena for 3 years. We buried the wire, so no need to worry when cutting the edges. Also we never removed the base station for the winter and it worked just fined. We just take the robot itself inside for the winter. We created a schedule once to start at 10 am and finish at 11 pm and it cut when it wanted in that window of time, lol. Also we washed it maybe 2-3 times during the season and replaced/sharpened the blades. We have just moved and we are looking to buy gardena again but a bigger model since we have 3x more lawn in our new yard. If anyone is thinking to buy it - I really recommend it. It is cheaper that many other brands but it works just fine. Just be prepared to work 1-2 full days to put down the wire (but you do it once and it will be good maybe for 5-10 years). Also do not listen to recommended boundary wire placement - put it way closer that it says on the ruler. You can always make it go further away in the app but you CANNOT make it closer in the app (default is the closest, so where you put your wire is really important). If you put your wire too far away from the fence, you'll have to trim your edges.

These are interesting. That pattern was crazy! They should make one that can do a few trim passes, then just go back and fourth. Looking forward to seeing how these mowers progress in the industry. Even though I personally love mowing, I love these robots. These are very dependable ones and there are some new ones coming that are supposed to offer lines and and more, but I think its much harder to do that. Even iRobot tried and failed to every release it.
@SpityLT
@SpityLT 3 жыл бұрын
They can make robots cut grass like Neato robots cleans room easy, but the main idea of robot cutting the grass is for it not to leave "tracks" that lawnmover and lawntractor leaves by going zigzag as Lawn robot is working everyday. So that is why it looks like robots are cutting the field random but in reality they don't, they know exactly what they are doing.
@Power5
@Power5 3 жыл бұрын
They could cut more grass if they didn't do random patterns. Makes no sense to criss cross the already cut sections. Wish they just made the path program so it could cut one direction in a back and forth pattern. Then next cycle cut back and forth in the perpendicular pattern. Then next cycle cut diagonally. At 10-20lbs these things do not make deep tracks like a normal walk behind or riding mower.

I had one, it is a very good product. I sold it anyway because I was tired of having a robot running through my garden all day for something I can easily do myself in 20 minutes twice a week. But my garden is much more difficult for a robot than yours because it's very elongated with more corners, so the mower has to do a lot more of those random turns than in a more or less square garden. Had to learn that for myself and sold it to a guy with one of those easier gardens who's very happy with the Gardena.

I used a robotic mower for a season. Good for those who don’t obsess over lawn care and just want it mowed. Some downsides are 1) troubleshooting breaks in the wire can be very difficult without special equipment, 2) can leave ruts in the lawn as they tend to use the same track to navigate its way home, 3) challenging to set it up so that it’ll cut a lawn separated by a fence, walkway or driveway. In the end it just wasn’t for me.
@colindobinson
@colindobinson 3 жыл бұрын
Those are familiar problems with some of the earlier, simpler mowers, but Gardena / Husqvarna have solved most of those issues. They vary their route back to their charging station to reduce wear and tear on the lawn, and they have a central guide wire that leads the mower to remote areas behind fences, walkways or driveways. The technology will continue to improve.
@raaah
@raaah 3 жыл бұрын
My problem with that more is that it mows without a specific pattern and it does not look good when you have a big yard and you can see where the lawn mower has been. If you are trying to keep the grass cut and don't care how the grass looks then that lawn mower is okay they make that similar lawn mower that does things without being random and looks a lot better

@picitnew

Good question. It will not work if you don't have those wires installed. Without the radio signals from the boundary wires it will not start. And it will notice if it's outside the closed boundary. The guide wire (not shown in the video) has to be connected to the boundary wire at one place (shown in the video). Without that guide wire the lawn mover would have a problem finding the charger after cutting the lawn. The lawn mover also uses this guide to get to different places on the lawn, but getting out could of course work without that wire. The connections to the charger is 5-6 cm up from the ground and I guess you don't get that much rain. This clearly something Gardena allready has thought of. And it's only low voltage so no security hasards if water actually should get at such levels.

You can wire both and have them as one big loop, then move the mower to the one without base station and start a cutting mode that will stop when battery runs low instead of try to find the station. But these smaller mowers have 1 hour of runtime before charging it would be tedious to do this. If a small path exist where you can have the mower follow the guide wire it will be better. Or people buy two smaller mowers.

It doesn't know all this. It starts its mowing base on the selected programm day by day. Based on the 'chaotic' run it reach all places over the time (not in one day). If its battery power is low then it searchs its power station, not more not less. There is also a need to install a control cable from the power station a cross the lawn to one part of the border cable, this helps the lawnmover to find its power station easily.

My yard has little slope at all, and have been gravitating towards buying a Worx since I cut my yard at 4" and some models of the Worx can do that (just short of 4" but close enough), but now I am having a hard time finding one at a reasonable price since it appears scalpers are buying them up and reselling at a much higher price. I also liked that "cut to edge" feature meaning less to string trim afterwards. One thing I don't like about robotic mowers is that wall banger navigation method, and I was really disappointed when iRobot cancelled their Terra robotic mower that did navigate intelligently, probably because they couldn't get the FCC to approve of the UWB technology for outdoors they were using for positioning (just guessing, I used to work with the tech years ago, and at that time it was only for indoor use, but I haven't followed for a few years it so I could be wrong.) Thank you so much for taking the time to make your videos, your reviews are the best, I don't buy anything until I have checked your channel first, and I am sure there are a lot of people who do the same. Many trees dont need anything special it will just bump into them and go around but you can wire around them to create little islands to avoid, this is good for beds in the middle of the yard. Gardena is owned by Husqvarna and some of their robot mowers are still around from years ago.

If there is a pin code activated then they have to figure that out. If they put in the wrong code 5 times they will have to wait to be able to continue. And this waiting time will increase for each time. So figuring out the pin code is not an easy task :) And if the lawn mover is registered at Gardena those thieves will not get any more updates for the lawn mover, even if they find the correct pin code.

If it's possible to lay the guide wire under or over this pathway then it's actually doable. But... only one guide wire can go from the charger to the boundary wire, so the lawnmover has to follow the entire guide wire to get to the different places. You can program it to start cutting from 3 different lengths from the charger. I concidering doing this myself so I don't have to carry it to my second lawn.

No it needs them (the wire). A robot vacuum operates in a flat environment with good surfaces to use it's LiDAR. An outdoor environment is much more complex. This year they release a version called Sileno Smart LONA (not regular "Smart") which use GPS and odometry so it builds a map but it's for how much cutting or keep-out zones, not the cm precision boundary as a wire loop gives.

You can setup zones with these so it will hang out in one area and then do the other. Im not sure if this will supports it but others will allow multiple units. There was a guy who had 8 mowers doijng a huge place, which sounds nuts but he said he was paying 50k a year to have it mowed and the robots were a one time cost of a little less than one year. I don't think you can use to different bases with the same lawn mover since the base and the lawn mover establishes a unique radio connection during the installation. But you can of course make another secondary lawn where you just occasionally place the lawn mover and let it cut until it runs out of battery. I'm doing this myself because my lawn is divided into two seperated places and this works perfectly fine.
