Stop that Heron!

I had a visiting Heron last year. Two pond wipe-outs by said Heron, I opted for Stainless Steel mesh. It protects my fish, but under the circumstances it’ll have to do!

That's really bad luck loosing two lots of fish. I bet you were pretty upset about it.

@@leecalladine yep! Some of the small Koi were less than 48hrs in residence. The 25mmx25mm SS mesh is an eyesore but guarantees the existing stock absolute safety! It’s not the Herons fault, if the local streams and waterways were good then the Heron wouldn’t visit.

my dads shed, (next to his pond) The heron was landing on top of it before jumping down to the pond. With the fishing line almost invisible to the eye, but as the heron lands on it and start to walk touches its feet and flies off straight away, after doing this up to now he’s not had a problem with them. With my pond we have 4 cats and a dog so lots of action I’m the garden and we don’t have one yet. So nice stuff you have Lee, Iv found you from another youTuber. We all stick together every day is a school day will try get over to your shop one day as well.

Great update what a good idea to keep them horrid herons away. I have a small pond and am always aware a heron might visit. My pond is a 5000ltr pond and I have a multibay with diy bakki shower.

Seen this before, what’s better is high strain breaking fishing line, even less noticeable.

Although completely in ground I have a brick wall about 12" high around my pond and on top of the wall is an electric fence. Keeps herons, minks, raccoons and other predators away from the fish. Since the install when I built the pond 7 years ago I have never lost a koi to any predator. 👍🏻

Electric fence is very effective.

My pond is smaller and I lost a few fish to herons. So I put in thin posts at the corners of the pond and and ran 5 strands of thin nylon fishing line round the pond with each strand a few inches above the one below. You can barely see the fishing line running between the posts. I doubt the herons can either as I haven't lost a fish to herons ever since.

Yes that's a really good idea too. So much easier on the eye than a net.

Would the herons go underneath the wires?

Unlikely. Possible but unlikely. Not as secure as a net. But frankly nets looks terrible.
