How good of you to say that. I have a stand-up show ready to do off-Broadway when the Covid clears, and agree with you that all the work of trying to make points clearly and truthfully apply to that too. Best wishes to us both! John Windsor-Cunningham

@@NewYorkActingCoach I’m honored that you’d respond to a comment of mine. You gave me the single most useful and important advice to preforming - listening is the key to creating interest. I have to listen to the audience to get them to hear me. I can’t thank you enough. I’m certain, once the Andromeda Strain 2.0 passes us by, your stand up will be very funny. And I look forward to it.

I personally worked with this man ONCE and I am hooked; I cannot wait for our next session. John is brilliant, BLOODY brilliant and anyone serious about their career in acting should sincerely consider working with him one-on-one. I initially wanted to work on my British accent because I really wanted to develop it to have more opportunities, especially being a green actress. We NEVER worked on that, and I can honestly say that it was for the better. Before even working on developing my version of the British accent, we worked on understanding scene breakdown, understanding the material and actually choosing the correct material for me, mood, and emphasis. John really works with you before you begin to work on what you want to work on and that is just the brilliance of the experience you share with him. He is an excellent mentor and teacher and I genuinely recommend and strongly encourage any serious actor to work with him!

Well, since you ask, I'll be on stage again later this year ,if Covid lifts and the theatre I want takes my latest show. And if doesn't then it'll be January next year on Theater Row on 42nd street. As long as we have a part we are bursting to play we will always end up doing it, all we have to do is find something we are ready to burst for. Then I don't believe we can be stopped. Your ability to turn a phrase is just astonishing! I find myself absolutely captivated by your videos - pausing, reflecting, and coming to realisations I otherwise wouldn't have done. You've given me a lot to think about before my next audition in few weeks and no matter how it'll go I'm certain it will be one of my best. I truly hope you're aware of your brilliance!

Maybe I'm ignorant/oblivious or I don't love my mother because I've never thought about it that way when she asks is her hair nice - i've always been honest and said if i like it or not or it's up to you to decide if you like it. because i've always seen the question at face value logically... Very strange - will be consciously looking out for subtext everywhere from now on - hopefully I grow from it and so does my acting.
@NewYorkActingCoach
@NewYorkActingCoach 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I may not have been clear - the word 'sub-text' is easy to throw around! And I do admire what you say about 'just saying what you mean' - but words are only words, they cannot possibly express what we really mean sometimes, so we may use simple words when we just say "How are you" but we obviously show how much we want to know when we say that! But I'm sure you know this. John Windsor-Cunningham

Gene Hackman has an unusually long speech in one of the French Connection films about American football which it's hard to imagine a single actor alive or dead being able to do other than him, but in theatre the great moments are actually happening THEN which makes them more powerful. @NewYorkActingCoach
@NewYorkActingCoach 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there probably is, in the Lincoln Center Library's collection of films in NYC - done of famous Broadway productions, - but the effect of that performance was connected with the time it is done and BURN THIS was 30 years ago, and John was probably better in the London production, so we have to find our own 'great' performances (or have the good luck to see them if we watch enough) to inspire us. My words were just to suggest that greatness is possible, sorry, John Windsor-Cunningham

Your recounting of Mr. Malkovich's performance in "Burn This" made me sad. We went to see it but were only able to get seats I the very back balcony. The sight lines were such that we could really only see the cast sort of from the knees down. To add insult to injury the bar staff mades such a cacophony of pouring ice into bins directly behind us that we weren't able to hear th play and had to leave before the intermission. Never mind. I would like to say thank you for all your insightful and engaging videos though.
@NewYorkActingCoach
@NewYorkActingCoach 9 ай бұрын
Always sad to hear negatives about a show, there being so many shows to just avoid! And we can only battle to see (or do) plays that are new, and clever. SKYLIGHT was like that when it opened, and is still as good a read as HAMLET in some places. Or, of course some plays, even of A..Miller and T.Williams - (as I explain in my SUBTEXT video) - can actually be worth seeing if the actors have the chance to give some of the hollow lines more background, (And I only allow myself to criticize them as those 2 writers are both passed! ) So keep pushing to find (or do) something where. intelligence rules, stardom is absent and humor and depth make the show an experience! And I'm sorry about that ICE - staff. I'd have demanded my money back. And Malkovich would have applauded you. John Windsor-Cunningham

When we get our Edinburgh Festival back you could fill a gig every night just talking like this. I was particularly struck by your vlog *The Happiness of Being An Actor* : Tolstoy said happiness writes white, but you proved him wrong. I hunt down very old biographies of Robert Donat, Charles Laughton, Donald Wolfit, and more recent ones of Paul Scofield and Albert Finney. In Oxfam books I found *Shouting in the Evenings - 50 Years on Stage* by James Hayes (2016) full of good stories like your own.

Thanks, but I wouldn't like like to hear any actor going on about themselves for a whole evening. The job should remain a private, secret mystery, - ego has to be controlled. I am doing a show Off-Broadway later this year (or next Spring), but I've made it into an actual play, so I'm hoping it will be more clever than this, and I agree that comedy can be 'clear' and happy, - Tolstoy was confused. Best wishes back. John Windsor-Cunningham

@NewYorkActingCoach
@NewYorkActingCoach 3 жыл бұрын
51 is quite a good age to get going. There's lots of work around for actors until they're 60 by which time you want to have established your 'contacts' to keep you going with parts where age does not matter, but where the casting-director already needs to know you. John Windsor-Cunningham
