rank resets are disproportionately worse for lower ranked players, when everyone gets moved towards the middle the below average players need to lose a lot to get back to their mmr. High rank players need to win like 60-70% to get back to their rank and a ton of lobbies get stomped for a while.

mhm, this is genuinely awful. some time in season 2 or season 3, i queued into a masters game on DPS. i would later fall all the way to bronze 1. today i'm silver 1, still nowhere near masters and it would still be an absurdly unfair match today.

Another thing about the ranked resets making you think you are worse I have noticed, is that people sometimes don't recognise that everyone has just been placed in a lower rank, so maybe gold games will feel like plat games, cause everyone in the lobby are former plats. Seen a lot of people hit this wall right on the day of the reset and then beat themselves up and hit that nasty cycle Spylo described where they start playing worse cuz they think they need to change things up.
@sethfarmer5870Ай бұрын
I feel like one of the biggest problems with ranked resets is that they usually decay everyones rank down by a few tiers. This means that you get placed in the rank below whatever you were at before, which on paper is fine you'll just climb out of it in a few games. The problem is that everyone else who was at your old rank has now also been deranked. This means in order to get back to your old rank, you actually have to be as good as people who were a full rank above you before the rank reset. It's super demoralizing being a pretty long time masters player who couldnt break out of diamond last season. almost every player in my games was also a former masters player, i would essentially have had to be gm pre ranked reset to get back to my rank.
@zachsmith8109Ай бұрын
I think part of the idea was that the rank curve was too flat, (I.e., too many players in both GM and bronze) so the rank reset made the distribution curve a bit steeper. This was intentional, they wanted masters and GM to be ranks that were harder to get and stay in. There’s a reason that there’s only like 50 champ ranked players in the entire world. So you being diamond isn’t any indicator of your skill level being worse, they just changed the skill requirement to be a masters player to be higher than it was previously

The girl doesn’t need to play the game to push through it. The anxiety very likely has little to do with overwatch. She probably doesn’t have any friends, or a life that she’s happy with outside of the game. Her feelings are a sign that she’s not taking care of herself in other ways that she’s ignoring. Im working 60 hours a week right now, and someone cut me off on the road. I was extremely mad, and wanted to slam my car into theirs, but its because Im not taking good care of myself and feel ignored. I wasn’t really mad at that guy on the road, I need attention and I’m constantly denying it from myself. She needs to go to therapy, and so do I.

Spilo, there's even more going on with the rank resets. Since this was a "limited" rank reset, all the Devs did was drop everyone about one skill tier. So, people found themselves lower, but facing their peers and trading ELO back and forth, like before, but now at a lower rank, which is further messing with their mental game.

Regarding comp anxiety: I think that this is primarily a problem of focus. Whether you have an inferiority complex or not is irrelevant to the fact that your emotions and thoughts of how others perceive you is irrelevant to the game itself. Simply orienting your focus on the game and your decision-making within the game will improve comp anxiety. Obviously, focus is something that has to be honed and developed for most people, but if you "focus on focusing" your anxiety will improve, and so will your decision-making in the game. This is what has worked for me.

@MinkMinkOWАй бұрын
I also suffered from ranked anxiety. I would be severely shaking in ALL my POTGs and even the enemy would be like “Holy crap”. What i did to overcome this is- Played more often on a specific hero to gain more confidence in taking a 1v1. Typically these moments happen when an enemy is capturing a checkpoint, the enemy is putting a lot of pressure on me, or when they are about to win the match. What you need to learn is anything is possible in OW, but there is not much you can do except what you know how to do. So don’t stress yourself out trying to make an outcome happen that is one in a million. Take 1v1s, shoot at the right target, do what you know how to do to win a game. After that, it’s up to you to learn how and where you can be better. The better you are, the more confidence you have. The more confidence you have, the better you can become.

With regards to the first point. It's important to keep in mind that Overwatch can be a very mentally draining game, there's a lot going on, you have to do a lot of things to pull your weight, games can be very gruelling in bad situations, etc. While you'll definitely play better in the morning be wary of making your shift way way worse by burning yourself on some bad comp games before your shift. Do not be afraid to just go back to quick play if it's not going well.

Ranked resets are a nightmare bc they keep me from playing. I don't want to play with fkn plats man, they're toxic and have no idea what's going on. The experience of taking constant psychic damage playing with delusional throwers isn't worth grinding back up to masters+ where I can play the game without my blood pressure rising bc I'm able to comfortably expect a baseline level of competency from my team So I've just not been playing ranked at all, what's the point? Your QP MMR is the exact same and people sweat QP like crazy so why not just play QP and get an objectively better competitive experience?? Crazy idea but maybe I've been playing the game over masters for 5+ years: it *might* be bc I belong there and resetting me back into plat/diamond constantly is genuinely pointless and a huge waste of my time

Rank resets are garbage. They shove everyone towards the middle, which makes bad matches for a long time, and I've seen higher smurf activity after them as well. Counterswapping is real. The biggest issue is when the whole team countrswaps, or your team doesn't understand how to play around it. E.g. the enmy goes Zarya, so you cannot protect your teammates from her beam, so they need to respect her space. I can play around Zarya just fine. But if my teammates just charge her bubble and walk into her beam, there's not much I can do.

Cant blame the tank everytime, when he has no heals to work with etc. these games are not even that bad, but getting absolutly steam rolled without a chance to do anything feels realy bad. had some of these games and my motivation to reque went instantly to zero (after playing for 3-6h already) and im closing the game. imo playing in the "early" hours of the day and stopping before 10pm saves you alot of looses and will get you more wins, atleast thats my experience. late games are just getting worse by the hour. a healthier alternative to counter swapping is to simply swap to your second best pick
@shioramenrabbitАй бұрын
Felt the bit at 5:45 in my soul. There are some heroes that simply are more effectively countered by another role rather than your own (so a tank counterswap will do less than a support swap against a hog, genji is more effectively countered by a tank or support swap, and ana's best counters are in DPS and tank). Which is fine, objectively, but what isn't fine is that we understand this concept with DPS and Support better than we do in the tank matchups for some ungodly reason.
@HarevaldАй бұрын
People don't play worse or better after rank reset. Most people tanked a whole rank not because of the psychology of it, but just because everyone got pushed down since Champion rank introduction. Current masters lobbies are like GM lobbies before the reset. It trickles down on all the ladder so if you are Diamond 5 player and before you were around diamond 1-masters 5, then literally nothing changed for you. Your lobbies are the same. The only thing that changed is what skill level we are calling "diamond". For example current Masters is 1.5% of the playerbase. Before it was like 3? Gms were 1-1.5% and now they are 0.2%. If you were gm3 before and now you sit in masters 4, it's literally the same thing.

Genuinely the ranked reset of S9 when champ was intro'd is so terrible. The ways that they changed how ranks are calc'd has ruined all interest for me to play the game. Ive been GM for some 5-6 years, consistently. Even in Overwatch 2 ALL of my comp games (When I play) are Top500 lobbies, but since S9 the game has wanted to throw me into mid dia, and I am just in no way interested in struggling through ranked slop against Top 500 players just to get out of Dia and never reach as high as my old ranks simply because GM is basically top 250 only. The Asian leaderboard across all roles are SO BAD that I think its either tank or DPS, but GM doesnt start until like top 80. Most of EU is like top 300 I think, and all but DPS in America is also top 300 for GM. They have ruined how ranks are calc'd and Im not going to put in time an effort to be rewarded with masters after being a consistent high GM player for years. Not. Interested. The "thrill of the climb" is the fakest thing ever, no one plays ranked "for the thrill of the climb" they play it to improve from where they were at, and no one wants to be systematically held a full rank lower than previous games. Why even add Champion divs 5-1 if youre just going to squish the ranked ladder towards center?

What you talk about on rank resets brings me back to my experience with the first rank reset. I feel hard on the first rank reset and it took me multiple seasons to fully get back to my peak, almost half a year. I decided to take that time to kind of relearn junkrat, since the character had changed a fair bit with the s9 changes, he was not the same anymore, so things that would have previously been unthinkable to me or playstyles that previously I wouldn't have even tried were now all on the table, I wasn't afraid to make mistakes and to limittest myself, trying to find out what worked and what did not. I honestly look back at the months following the rank reset as times of both selfreflection and selfgrowth, I grew more as a player then than I did before s9. I allowed myself to be more creative, instead of playing for the combo which had been pretty much all I used to do. Part of what I am today comes from that time, and honestly, I think the pain was worth it for me, it was the bucket of cold water I needed to finaly step out of my comfort zone and focus on improving as a player.
@ShelltoastАй бұрын
I relate greatly to the girl with anxiety. Mine is intrusively bad and I continue to have a very personal fight to manage it. I actively use therapy to help deal with it and improve my lifestyle. For me, when I queue comp it’s like a weight is placed straight into my stomach. I get incredibly tense and irritable. It makes it easier to get emotional about games, ranging from teammate frustration to self-hatred. In general, it’s just not advisable in my opinion to queue until you are able to learn coping mechanisms. But once you have, you really do need to PRACTICE them by queuing. And the advice you gave her, in my opinion, is spot on. Have chats disabled. Having the ability to manually tune out pointlessly unreliable judgment is incredibly useful. Take it slow. Get used to making mistakes and seeing them as positives to learn from. Acknowledge what you did well. I gather that she doesn’t need to train herself to deal with outward anger, so just reassuring yourself that you are playing mindfully is definitely the way to go. Decatastrophize. If there’s anxiety from the rank going up and down, losses and errors, practice building a process to relax yourself. It’s not a life or death scenario. Build acceptance over the rank bar going up and down not changing anything. It does not gauge how good you are or can become. Most importantly for me is to know your limits. If you feel like you are too stressed to keep playing and can’t calm down, hop off and relax. Repetition: good. Overstimulation: Very very unhealthy. If you can only play one game in a day before you can’t focus anymore and your thoughts are just clouded with negativity, completely fine. Pace yourself to your own needs. Afterwards, meditate. Process what you did well in the games. I find a need to also consider what I need to improve but once you start getting unreasonably self critical, it’s not really going to be the time to think about that part. Rinse and repeat this process, and gradually get used to the experience. The anxiety is unlikely to ever go away, but hopefully it will become more manageable over time.

Mental energy and physical energy are different things (in my opinion). If I do a full day of manual labour then I've still got plenty of mental energy left for overwatch. As for Rank resets as far as motivation goes it depends a lot on the person. I don't think there are going to be many people that go "Oh boy a new season, time to get my rank back!" though. Even if Blizzard has data to conclude that people play more, if people feel generally more negative towards it I think that is a bad thing regardless. I am sure there are people who get demotivated in a different way too. They get to a new shiny rank they have never got before and then abandon competitive to not tarnish it. Then join quickplay games to harass people there about them not playing 'correctly'.

The issue with how they did the ranked reset on Overwatch is they OVERDID the extremely harsh compression on the ranked distribution. It's extremely demotivating for players to be in a visual rank lower than they were and really bad when you compress too many players downward. It's a bit telling when you have former T500 players in Masters, former GM players in Diamond, Former masters players in Plat... the downstream consequences of that are not pretty for your average player who was Gold-Plat and now has even more wildly wide range of player skill in their matches. That's ALSO why the match qualities have gone down the drain. The distribution has never corrected itself after multiple seasons DESPITE the Devs acknowledging its more severe than they wanted it to be. Ranked resets once in a while are good to clear out Alt + boosted accounts, and can motivate people to play more than they would (some people hit a peak rank and don't want to touch ranked again). But the way they've done it in OW2 is just way too overboard.

I'd like to share my experience with rank resets. Season 9 rank reset was an ABSOLUTE blessing for me, because before that I was crazy demotivated, almost completely gave up on myself, was borderline dropping to bronze. It was clear I had the potential to climb back to gold 3 where I used to be for a long time, I had game knowledge etc, but I was just so apathetic. With the tank reset I climbed from silver 4 to gold 5, and have been traveling in gold ever since (was in gold 3 at least 70% of the time since season 9), even hit plat a season ago. Normal climbing rate gets so stale and unsatisfying, and it felt very very exciting to have those high-importance high gain high loss games. It had a very refreshing vibe. Leading up to the last reset I was gold 5, cuz I felt very demotivated and frustrated with myself AGAIN for being stuck in gold 3 so much. With the reset, I climbed back to my gold 3 and stayed there. So basically I do this thing a lot when if I start losing rank I really struggle to stop doing it 💀 like I just lose belief in myself and it lasts for sessions and sessions. Over the years I noticed that I am very prone to full on submerging myself into "I will never climb, I'm just not build for video games" mentality, that often persisted even after a win streak that would return me back to where I was. When I lose rank I play way worse, because it gets really hard for me to pay attention and my reaction speed goes down, because I have this apathy, I'm just not excited, I also get bored really easily and just crave to do something dumb. I don't feel rewarded because I feel like I'm SUPPOSED to play well. I often even get upset and tilted over how easy it is for me to outplay my opponents, how I can do dumbest shit and not get punished. However recently the games have been feeling very challenging most of the time, so I'm happy about that. But if there is ever a game that feels like fucking gold 5 all over again, sometimes I do get upset and feel pathetic ngl. Interestingly enough, I'm also very capable of stepping up, like if I play in plat-diamond lobbies (w a friend) I very much blend in normally because I get excited. But in lobbies that feel like gold 5 I often play straight up like a silver, especially since I get bored easily, I need challenge so I artificially "create" it for myself by doing dumb things. Overall, I am very grateful we have rank resets, and I think they are good for motivating players. But also it's unbelievably annoying to play with ppl who don't belong in the same rank, and again from the psychology standpoint, it's so triggering it can force players to fall down. So I don't know if such frequent rank resets are a net positive or a net negative thing. I'd like to say tho, the matchmaking felt way better than how it used to be, even really good some sessions

(Note: since the first reset I played solo at least 50% of the time, and 40% of time was with gold-low plat players)

I would say, counterwatch isn't a hard shutdown, but what it tends to do consistently, is remove the number of good plays at your disposal just based off of the hero matchup. You can always play around counters, you can always find a way and you'll never be hard shut-down. But where in a normal matchup you may have 5 decent options to pick from at any given moment, if you're "countered", that number of decent options may go down to 1-2 viable choices in most cases. So what counterwatch does, is it removes degrees of agency which just feels bad
@muckdriverАй бұрын
I had the opposite thanks to the resets for tank and dps. Support was 2 divisions off roughly. Tank I've gone from inconsistent low plat to consistent high plat. Dps was silver and skipped to high gold and climed fine to plat despite aim on the heroes I want to learn.
@shiba473Ай бұрын
It didnt happen to me with a rank reset specifically, but I nearly hit masters on tank during season 5? (the junker queen gigabuff season and currently diamond 5) and when the nerfs came next season I was legitimately both scared and discouraged to play tank at all and thus stopped playing tank for like 6 months until I just took the dive and de ranked (15 straight losses) bc I was so scared of this higher rank that I was at. Being at a rank that you dont deserve to be at doesnt make me more confident so I really dont see the positives of rank resets outside of engagement/player retention purposes which I would be interested to see if thats true

I have my own little hot take: Rank inflation isn't real. Or at least there's no reason to believe it exists One of the big memes among high comp nerds is that like, a giga low bronze player in ow1 is somehow on the same level as high diamond in ow2. Or like, plat and below in ow2 encompass bronze in ow1 or other equally ridiculous things. Basically, an ow1 player is having their rank significantly inflated by ow2. There's no evidence for this other than that players who were ranked low in ow1 are climbing in ow2. Which is to be expected because like, they have more experience than they did. I think it's just another thing for comp nerds to feel elitist about. Like it's just a conspiracy theory that gains traction in high comp to make them feel even more elitist. But they kind of don't realize that, by their logic, if everything masters and below is bronze, they're silver. Personally I think ranks kinda deflated. Like if you took a mid diamond player from ow1 and dropped him into ow2, he'd probably place like high gold or mid plat. There's so much more to learn, more heroes to master, more difficult metas, and I'd probably wager that most players are generally better than they were in ow1. Like every returning player is going to be more skilled by virtue of simply having more experience, and every new player is going to be adapting right into the current power structure of the game whereas a returning ow1 player would have to change habits from years of ow1 experience and _then_ learn the new meta

I'll say that I think rank resets are potentially good for people who mostly play in groups. I've been in groups like this, and there were definitely people who were far over ranked and far under ranked, and the system can't really fix the disparity without a reset. I think it can slightly help.

I work 8 hours a day. Up at 5am. Come home and play for hours. I always put in work. And my for my Rank I'm moving up. But, I have a coach. Learning the fundamentals first. And I am doing well. It's all becoming second nature. Use cover .5 second rule, rotating, know when to kite out. Don't chase. Usually they run you into their team and you will immediately out numbered. You don't have to kill them to remove them from the fight. If you have a player that's HP is critical. They won't be threat.

I have a weird situation in regards to the rank reset. I play on 2 accounts, 1 is my ranked comp account and 1 is my quick play with friends account. Up until recently my QP games were around masters and my ranked was in low GM. The QP account is in gold on ranked cause I haven't played ranked in like 5 years on it, but as of the last reset it seems like the ranked MMR replaced the quickplay MMR. I can easily solo carry on Doom or Sigma in the gold games, but it isn't really that fun to smurf montage clips in gold/plat QP. As a result I've been basically 50% win rate in gold QP while climbing to a new high in GM in ranked at the same time. A part of me still doesn't even believe that is the issue because I can't believe they would ranked reset the casual game mode, AND do it not based on the existing MMR, or the highest MMR.

Man I want to play OW right now, but I just don't know if I can. I'm waiting for 6v6 before I definitively return because the thought of OW is better than the action of actually playing it. Everyone I know hasn't played OW since 2 came out essentially, Hazard looks cool but even though I'm a support player I couldn't care less about anything affiliated with Tanks until 6v6 is back. I've kept up with the updates and all that but haven't played this season, 5v5 just isn't that fun anymore and I couldn't care less about competitive because I'm the only person in my group who even plays it. Marvel Rivals I'm glad you exist because OW needed this push back to their roots, I hope they don't fumble the bag.

That pne post about anxiety and shame is somewhat relatable for me as well. Im a very confident player most of the time. I do take ego duels and i always think im the best smartest player on my team. But all this goes out the window when im in chat and im expecting other players to comment on my performance. I notice that when i leave vc and disabled text chat and nobody can message me i play WAAYY better. Like genuinely i pop off and bascially carry. Ill rejoin text at the end of the game and be showered in praise and ill say gg and gl in yiur next and then move on. In the next game if im still in chat ill play noticeably worse and get flamed and its so frustrating. So ive resorted to jusr staying out of chat entirely. Nobody ever has anything good or useful to say anyway so its pointless and if someone really liked my performance i usually get a friend request and then a dm or whisper after i add them. But yeah. Stay out of chat and you can focus solely on yourself without fear of negative feedback.

I think rank resets r just dumb because it actually works in quite a weird way. In ow1 when you werr above 3.9, it basically kept your mmr, so if you were 4.5, then you will be put in 4.5 lobbies even with a 3.9 acc. However, in ow2 for some reason after s9 when you are gm4+ and get tank reset, the first few games are actual diamond games, with half or more being actual diamond players, and you can even minmax it by duoing with let's say a plat3 player after your first win of placements on a gm4 acc putting you in d3. This just makes a lot of the placement matches feel like smurfing, and some of them are just complete random like you will get 3 gm3+ players in a master 3 lobby 5 games into ur placement against u with actual master players on ur team. Imo if ur gonna do rank resets, then go all the way and do an mmr reset, but for some reason that hasnt happened ever, at least not from what i remember, my 44 acc from ow1 was still gm mmr when i came back season 10 of ow2

After rank reset i dropped from high diamond/masters to plat 4-5. I genuinley dont get it. I feel like play better than i did before too because i know the maps and new heroes more. If the skill differential on console is that massive now i have to think that you have to cheat to get to gm.

I am not sure I 100% understand you, it sounds like you are saying you cannot be plat 5, then sometimes gold 3? I have played since Ow1 beta, and mainly play other games like CS, and I swing like a pendulum between ranks. I only play like 150 matches each season, but my rank is wildly different. It is extremely correlated with how serious I take it and how burnt out I am on Overwatch/competitive. So I would say it is incredibly fair to switch between gold and diamond. It just sounds very unlikely if you have the same playing habits, only solo Q, and watch some vods of yourself to humble yourself. With that said, overall I totally agree. I do not think it is the MM system. "You" are likely a lot less consistent than that system.

Orisa v Rein is a neutral trade? That's wild. All 3 of her abilities counter him. And rein can't do anything vs her ult. And not to mention a bully orisa just shooting in reins face.
@KURENANIАй бұрын
Struggling against an orisa as rein just shows you that you aren't made to play this role... Bait her abilities,hold corners like your life depends on it and when you can rotate to a position that gives you free rein over her backline. With just these tips you can pretty much win against any comp, trust me I feed on orisas, maugas and roadhog as rein!
@xeron2780Ай бұрын
@@KURENANI yeah nah be honest, you legit cant counter a hog as rein, unless you are just way better than the hog and have an ana to anti him. Beating orisas as rein is definitely possible same for dva in some maps, mauga as well depending on the map (not always), but hog? If any dps plays a tank buster you have 0 chance almost of winning fights against a hog. Good luck beating a hog as rein with a reaper/pharah/mei
@KURENANIАй бұрын
@xeron2780 Of course, I can't win against pharah or any other flying hero, but I can definitely win against a roadhog. It is simply about being flexible and not playing into roadhogs strength. Here is a simple tip, Force them to fight at a disadvantage. This game is about objective. Just don't let them through !
@xeron2780Ай бұрын
@@KURENANI you are trying to make a point but this doesnt work in 5v5. Rein has 1600 shield health. One single close range hog shot does 200-250 damage. Now add another dps shooting at it with another 100 dps. The shield will break in a matter of seconds, and your advice of using corners and hiding simply doesnt work in most maps against a hog in 5v5. He will push you and pressure you or your teammates and even try to hook someone. So my team will start getting picked off because I am not creating or contesting space and not fighting or taking any pressure. Its just not possible in 5v5 unless you have a good ana and you yourself outplay the hog a lot. Its way harder to lose to a rein as hog than any other character exactly because of the fact you can push and self heal and dish out massive damage in short time up close. Your point is invalid without anas. No point to keep arguing about it
@michaels9595Ай бұрын
@@KURENANI are you talking 1v1 rein vs orisa? Of course not. So you must be talking team vs team. A Rein success against Orisa depends heavily on Rein's teammates. There is no window of opportunity for Rein in terms of Orisa cooldowns.

14:40 Positive reinforcement is so huge. Me and a friend play Overwatch pretty frequently, but we always end up getting so frustrated by the various annoying/toxic comments in chat. It's gotten to the point where we've just straight up turned off chat, and talk between ourselves and whoever else is in our vc. It has genuinely been a huge boost for moral and our mental, and it's helped us deal with some of the issues that arise from encountering that one frustrating person in chat. If you keep having similar issues where you feel like you're getting frustrated due to what's being said rather than the gameplay, I'd recommend turning off chat for a bit, and see if that improves the overall mood. That said, it can make things pretty lonely when you're playing by yourself.

If the matchmaker is fine then how come when I play solo on a Smurf I can't even hit gm4 but on my main when I played with a duo/trio I almost hit champ? No not boosed, I have the exact same stats exact same mindset same heroes same everything. I'm always objectively judging my gameplay and aware, for example of I don't swap at the right time or if I do happen to make a mistake, or my hero pool isn't great for the map/comps or not using an ult at the right time etc, I accept my mistakes and get better when I can. But honestly I have games where I genuinely have the best possible performance available to the situation and I still lose, I get perfectly timed picks on widow, perfectly timed sticks on someone with an ult after forcing Suzu/lamp, and more plays like this. I'm not perfect, I make mistakes even the best players do. I obviously am a little biased and accept that every game is carryable and I might be a bit inconsistent, but even the games where I do everything perfectly feel impossible. There is seriously something wrong in matchmaking. Like stacks, depreoatization, max rangers and smurfs. Whatever the cause is, games just feel impossible to win sometimes (Console for context)
