I remember when this movie came out and I finally saw it, I was traumatized by the scene of the guy sleeping with the creature 😵💫. I wouldn’t have had a problem if the creature was more intelligent and adult (mostly all of us have seen movies with aliens and humans having relationships -> Star Wars,Star Trek). @@kdior777 I mean let's say you encountered them in reverse. You're the alien creature and they come take your daughter or leaders daughter or your next leader or just a child of your kind in general. Regardless of the fact one of them saved her they now keep her as a sex slave and killed anyone who tried to get her back. Then as the icing on the cake after one of them shows he's friendly and wants to communicate the other one murders a child in front of all of you for absolutely no reason other than he's crazy and hostile. They had no reason to trust friend because grunner is all they ever have known and he's not set the best example of trust. They eventually learned to trust him entirely due to the female and his interactions.
@kdior7773 жыл бұрын
@@grimsgraveyard3598 you're right. I thought about it, right after I posted it. Friend was perceived as the enemy from their 1st encounter. They are creatures that think. He was in a house and it was go time...

The girl went home all the time so why would they be coming up to get her? They also attack friend in the house when the girl toad is in the light house and Grunner says they killed the guy on the boat who was leaving a ship wreck. I don't know why their attacking but it doesn't seem to be to save girl creature. It may be because they use the land they're on or maybe the female creatures can choose who they want to be with and the rest of her species disagrees so instead of forcing her back they are trying to just remove the variable. Overall Grunner saved her when she was a kid and he's only been on the island for a year when friend gets there. So the girl creature has aged less than a year by the time friend arrives. I don't know how these creatures age but by human standards molestation.

@Aluzky, your comprehensive defense of this man and elaborate intellectualization to justify behavior that every decent person watching the film would inherently condemn, says more about you and your own degenerate nature than anything related to the film. You're siding with the only actual monster in the whole tragic play. Gruner is a man void of feelings, after he lost his wife, he lost his humanity. He's a broken shell of a man, and spending so much time in isolation drove him insane. His character is the basis for the title of the film. The worst thing in this world is intelligence without compassion, who wounded you to such a degree that you side with villains against an honest reaction of the events portrayed?

Watched the movie, and it’s not really about the creature being a mating slave. The creature is a subset of human species that evolved in a pocket ecosystem away from other humans and is more marine based and cold blooded. One man sees her as a slave or a pet (he once refers to her as a dog) and he uses her for many things including healing his wounds and for sex. The other man is afraid of her at first but they form a bond and he starts to see intelligence and emotion from her. By the end, he is respectful of her species and wants a truce with them while the other man just wants to kill her species and subjugate her.

What we can gather, is that these sea creatures were simply aiming to reclaim and avenge the pain of Aneris. They are capable of rational thought; and as Friend began to show kindness to the Toads, they begun to return in kind with lessening attacks. Gruner seemed to have been trapped and never shared in the curious compassion for the toads. He saved one and was subjected to persistent attacks. Finding his only solace in the toad female's company. He did not want to be left alone; as humans are not made to be isolated without another. Before Friend came along; he had nobody to speak or depend on. So his anger, loneliness, and fading memories would consume him. Friend taking over Gruner's position opens new light. He retained compassion, love, and humanity to see the pain and problem before him. He wanted to uphold his duties, and fought purely to survive. But he wanted to see what exactly they desired; and with it begun to discover that these monsters were simply seeking to rescue their own. When Friend created the peace offering; and tried to treat Aneris with respect. He opened the door to a new unity; and revealed the true monster that was Gruner. the man that nigh lost all humanity and sense of self. The island's isolation had created a monster and with what brief clarity; he submitted himself to his punishment. Friend, becoming the new Gruner did not lose his compassion. He upheld his true duties as the Lighthouse Watch. Where the monsters would cease their attacks; and the return of Aneris to the sea was the wrong made right.

What I really enjoyed about this story was how the Syren's call lured her own people OUT OF the water to die on land, when in myth they lure humans to die in the sea. And it really seemed to me like she was certainly less intelligent, but clearly inhuman in her motives and attitudes. People ascribe all kinds of meaning to her actions throughout the fiom but nobody tries to put themselves in her shoes for real: she's a Syren/Syrena, who according to myth serves a consistent function of luring sailors out of their ships with their songs and beauty. What if her kind does this reflexively on behalf of whoever they're pair bonded to? What if she had no real control over it? So many fascinatinf questions that get drowned out by the, 'Eww, he's a fish-loving sexual criminal!' Obviously he's not all together, but what about HER? Was actually an interesting film to think about from her perspective. Lots of opportunity to reflect.

The film is nothing like the book. The book is more gruesome, for example: when they collect the dynamite they use it not to end the "citauca", because they accepted they can't, but to kill as many as they can just for maddening bloodlust. Oh, and they agree to take turns with Aneris, there is no jealousy involved. It's very crazy, primal and animalistic. I like the book a lot.

Seriously... abuse can be of several types...Why it always has to be sexual molestation is beyond me.

There are. Theres already plenty of media that does all kinds of abuse. Sexual abuse is the one that most people seem to think is simply inexcusable to explore and would rather ignore it exists yet you'd be completely fine if it was physical abuse like whipping, beatings or drug abuse that are just as unpleasant to watch. At that point we should just ignore every form of abuse since they are all unpleasant. Just grow up. It happens. Its happened to me as well as many others.

I think when Friend saw that, he started taking a shine to the creature. He probably started fantasizing about having sex with it himself.

This movie gave me that vibe from that one cthulu game like maybe it was inspired by the movie cuz like whale bone, sea diving suit, similar monsters, lighthouse, old notes and research, etc

For those not knowing, its a Catalan book, called La Pell Freda (The cold skin being the best translation). Aneris, the name he gives to the fish girls, its the catalan way to call mermaids, Sirena, but backwards.

Love the recaps, hate the titles. Can you like.. accurately reflect the movie with a title and not try to use bait titles for edgy kids?

some questions, if anyone can help answer: 1. is there a reason why they only attack at night if they can move around in the day? 2. I get there's a level of Stockholm syndrome going on with her but why do the creatures keep attacking to get to her if she comes and goes freely, is it that they just want to kill gunner regardless to try to get her to give him up? 3. is she like their queen or mother, cuz they said gunner found her and raised her so not sure how important she could be to them that so many would sacrifice themselves for her when she comes and goes freely? ...........well thanks to anyone who could help answer.

I just watched the movie. And you asked really great questions. I think I need to read the book to see if there is more of an explanation to everything. I did enjoy the movie tho.
