@namegoeshere89983 жыл бұрын
Similar experience, I just saw it today and I wasn't sure what it would be like. It's gotten good reviews, but most I've seen really undersold it. That was one hell of a movie, the kind that doesn't come around very often. Huge budget, huge scale, and yet it was very well written, IMO, and even more than that it was made by a director who seems to know filmmaking and storytelling very well. There's a dreamlike feel to it, a balanced surrealism, and it has a real depth and majesty, like a massive, slow moving machine that takes great force to begin gaining speed, but once it's really going, it's impossible to stop. It was slow feeling for me, but utterly mesmerizing. I actually tend to prefer movies to be a little slower paced, so I'm definitely not saying that as a complaint. I'm looking forward to the next one, and I'm going to have to read the books.

In this day and age of a new Marvel movie every minute and prestige television where non-stop high quality visual effects are not only common place, but pretty much come at us in a constant, never-ending, mind-numbing barrage, it's hard to imagine someone making a film that truly makes visual effects feel special again. But then Dune happened and brought back the movie magic of bygone days. The days of Star Wars and Jurassic Park. In the movie world of Dune, everything feels completely tangible and real, familiar and yet unlike anything you've ever experienced before. But above all, every moment is utterly captivating. You can tell how much attention went into every detail. Denis Villeneuve has taken blockbuster cinema to new heights. And it's not just about him. He hired an amazing cast, crew, composer, you name it, and then he brought out the absolute best in every single one of them. The score is completely alien sounding and elevates every scene. The cinematography is picture perfect. The set design is incomparable. The innovation and attention to detail is next level. Few blockbusters double as prestige cinema, but Dune truly does. It's utterly engrossing whether you're a fan of the book, a hardcore cinema lover/snob, or merely a casual viewer who happened to wander in off the street on a whim.

What's awesome to see is that directors with huge nerdy passions for the characters and stories they really want to get involved with then getting to actually make the movies and then making them absolutely amazing. Peter Jackson was a huge Lord of the Rings nerd, John Favreau described himself as the biggest Iron Man fan. These Directors then do the best things with the properties they are assigned to, it's so impressive.
